Quality Signs
The scheme in 2011
There are four EU quality signs:
☛ PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), which covers the French AOC.
☛ PGI (Protected Geographical Indication).
☛ Organic Farming.
☛ TSG (Traditional Speciality Guaranteed), which covers ready-cooked dishes
and processed products. By the end of 2011 there were 41 TSGs in the
European Union: 9 in Poland, 4 in the Czech Republic, 3 in Spain, 2 in Italy
and the United Kingdom, and none in France.
Other quality signs exist but are considered by the European Commission to fall
within the remit of national programmes.
☛ Label Rouge (LR) Approximately 470 LR, “red label”, products were registered in 2010, of which 350 were for meat, prepared or cured meats, and poultry. LR traditional farm chickens account for over half of all purchases of whole
chicken carcases in France.
☛ Quality statements: “farm product”, “mountain product”, “local product”.
☛ CCP Product compliance certificates.
The Label Rouge is placed in the top category along with the four EU quality signs,
whereas quality statements are classed in a second-level category, and CCPs in a
third.
