Sarasota native, Adelaide Boedecker, just
finished her tenure with the Pittsburgh Opera and
has completed her second summer with
the Merola Opera Program. Adelaide got her start
in opera with the Sarasota Youth Opera program,
and she received her training from the University
of Florida and the Eastman School of Music.
Working with professor Kathryn Cowdrick,
Adelaide has performed roles such as: Stella in
‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and Despina
in ‘Così Fan Tutte’ with the Merola Opera
Program (San Francisco Opera Center). While
with Pittsburgh Opera, Adelaide embodied many
characters, some of which are Alice B. Toklas in
‘27’, Marie in ‘La Fille du Régiment’, Frasquita in
‘Carmen’ and Beth in ‘Little Women’. She recently performed with Performance
Santa Fe as Yum Yum in the ‘Mikado’ and as Clorinda with the El Paso
Opera. She will be seen as Estrella in ‘Avastar’ this spring with the Santa Fe
Opera. She heads back to Santa Fe Opera this summer to sing Ida in
‘Die Fledermaus’.
MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT, OLIVIA SWAAN
Dear FRIENDS,
We’ve just had two terrific FUN- Fundraisers! The first was La ‘Triviata’ held on Feb. 23rd.
It was a truly fun night with good FRIENDS competing in a musical trivia game while
enjoying cocktails & an Italian dinner. Thank you to Julia & Robert Dadekian and their
committee for all the work that went in to making this a very enjoyable and profitable
evening. And next year, we hope to see many more 'Trivia know-it all's' to take part in this
FUN evening.
Then OH! What fun we had at our annual FRIENDS Gala! Once again the room at Michael's
On East was transformed into party mode with carnival colors to celebrate 21 years of
ASCOS. 'Carnival in Venice' took on a life of its own, with beautiful exotic masks and costumes. Even the servers
were dressed as Gondoliers, while Vince Demor, our strolling minstrel, serenaded the guests as they sipped on
signature Bellini cocktails. The scene was set for a truly memorable evening.
All of this does not happen without many dedicated people behind the scenes. If only we were like 'Genies' who
could wiggle their noses to get things done, but alas, we are mere mortals who must strive very hard to get things
done. So having said that, I would like to especially thank the Co-chairs for this year’s event, Nancy Reichl &
Antonette Cunningham and their committee for an outstanding job; To Bobby Garibaldi -Sanders for the
beautiful Silent Auction baskets; To John Fischer, who is always doing such a wonderful job with almost everything
behind the scenes; To Lee Dougherty Ross, who told the guests about Artist Series Competitions and the
importance of the Gala, helping to raise funds for the awards; To Joseph Holt for arranging our entertainment… and
it was … so, well, what can I say … so entertaining - Will & Anthony Nunziata who know how to get everybody in the
mood; To Franklyn & Rodger Skidmore for selling lots and lots of raffle tickets; To Donna Fisk who is always there
to help and lend a helping hand; and to Helen Beljean, whose keen eye notices everything .
We will have more details about funds raised at our next FRIENDS meeting on March 23rd 2:00 pm at the David
Cohen Hall. I hope to see you all there- maybe invite a friend or two to come with you. You know what they say- the
more the merrier, as it’s always good to have new members with new ideas.
If I did not mention you by name please forgive me. ALL the FRIENDS are so important in making this a wonderful
organization.
However, there are three people I would like to recognize - Linda Heller, who very quietly goes about putting
ACCENTS together and does such a wonderful job with layout, making it so attractive to the eye.
THANK you, LINDA.
And John Halstead, the ultimate volunteer, who is always ready to lend a helping hand… whether it’s carting things
from point A to point B, helping set up tables and every year helping with checkout at the Gala. Thank you John, we
really appreciate all you do!
And Ray Broth, who is always there with his camera to record the happy scene, and to make us look so good &
better than we really do! Thank you Ray!
Cheers, Olivia.

FUN ! FUN! FUN!

personal phone call will be what it takes to inspire them to get active with
FRIENDS of Artist Series Concerts. If you would like to help out with the
Phone Tree, as a FRIEND and volunteer, please let me know. I will help you

2nd Annual
‘LA TRIVIATA’
a FUNtastic Evening
“Beginning with its birth 20 years ago
in the lobby of our condo, I have
watched and marveled at the growth of
A very enjoyable evening of
Artists Series Concerts. Our neighbors,
yummy Italian food, wine and
Lee and Jerry brought together music
and camaraderie and although the
venue soon became larger and grander,
that same element remains.
They have
fostered a hominess to their gatherings
which
celebrates
music,
art
and
friendship in full measure.
I have been a proud member of the
Board of Trustees for some years and been witness to not only
expansion in the breadth of
programming (I doubt you will
find a more broad based series in Sarasota) but also in the
depth of commitment to those who listen, to those who learn,
and to those who perform.
When not here in Sarasota, my home is Center City in
Philadelphia. Daily I walk by The Curtis Institute of
Music
and The Philadelphia Orchestra from where many
have
performed in an Artists Series Concert. They just love coming
here! They then pass that little secret on to new students &
members….“if you ever get asked to go to Sarasota, never say
no.”
trivia “guessing” was enjoyed by

FRIENDS
at
the
Unity
rd
Church on February 23 .
Thanks to Chair, Julia Dadekian
and her committee for all their hard
work to provide a fun evening Olivia Swaan, David Chivas, Ron
Rice, Jane Riggin, Linda Stevens,
Diane Weeghman, Antonette
Cunningham, Beverly and Ray
Broth, Linda Heller, Bonnie
Sussman Lee Dougherty Ross,
Robert Dadekian and Helen
Beljean. We netted $865 to
continue our support of Artist
Series Concerts. Next year will
bring a different “flavor” to the
event...
so stay
tuned.
I then think of ALL who have performed here either as
talented students or seasoned professionals & will attest to their
delight in being here, especially under Lee’s wing.…..with John
Fischer and Joe Holt always looking to new talent and old
charmers - as Lee would say ‘EVER ONWARD’ friends of music,
of life and of love. “
