The Old World -Stale -Worn-out -Too set in ways to change 3 The New World -Clean -New -Pure -Good The Old World -Dirt -Pollution -Corruption -Sin 4 New World Life Health Old World Death Disease 5 -Unlimited Opportunity -Chance to Improve position in life -Limitless Possibilities No Social Mobility No Social Freedom 6 Many who would come to America saw the opportunity to make a better world and to avoid the mistakes/evils of the Europe. Many people of the New World looked back at Europe with disgust and set out to create a “City on a Hill” to serve as an example to other Christian nations. Because many Americans believed that God had given them this opportunity to create a better world – much attention was paid to the DESTINY of the American people – What is Destiny? 7 As Americans looked at their new nation that began to see themselves as the people God chose to improve the World. This way of thought lead many Americans to view the North American Continent as a gift they had been given by Heaven. It became MANIFEST to them that God wanted them to control the Continent and bring civilization and goodness to the land – What does Manifest Mean? 8 The idea of a national Manifest Destiny became a passion of many Americans – claiming the entire continent from sea to sea was their goal. By doing this they could fulfill what God wanted.
