Series 235: Hair
Hair
Pre-school children are continually growing and changing. They are
fascinated with how they look and enjoy looking at themselves in the
mirror. Caring for hair is part of a young child’s routine. Brushing, cutting,
decorating and gelling hair is of great interest. There are some young
children who are fearful of washing their hair and need reassurance and
time.
We hope the practical and creative activities featured in this series
enhance children’s perceptions of their physical attributes as well as their
awareness of those around them.

MAKE AND DO
How to Make Hats
You will need:
A3 coloured cardboard (including
some pink cardboard for a watermelon
hat!)
Safety scissors
Tape or a stapler
Paste
Things to decorate your hats with, such
as crayons, stickers, tinsel and glitter
A pencil
Elastic
A Crown
Cut a strip of cardboard about 20cm in width and long enough to fit around your head with
a little bit of overlap. Cut triangles along one side to create a zigzag pattern. Fit the strip of
cardboard around your head, just above your ears and eyebrows, and tape or staple the
ends together. Decorate with crayons, stickers, glitter and tinsel.
A Star Hat
Draw a circle, slightly bigger than your face, in the centre of a piece of A3 cardboard. Draw
a large star around the circle. Cut out the star and then cut the circle from the middle of the
star, so you are left with a star-shaped hat, as pictured above. Tape or staple two lengths of
elastic to the back of the hat. Decorate with crayons, stickers, glitter and tinsel. Fit the hat on
your head, as pictured above, and tie the two lengths of elastic together so it stays in place.
A Watermelon Hat
Cut two large, identical semi-circles from a piece of pink A3 cardboard, as pictured above.
Tape or staple the semi-circles together, leaving the straight edge open – this is where your
head will go! Decorate your watermelon hat with crayons. Draw a green rind around the
semi-circle and some black pips in the middle!

To make a washing basket wombat, turn a
