Back then, trains were primarily used for ferrying goods and passengers around difficult navigation points along the Columbia River. Today, Washington represents one of the most important rail corridors in the country, serving some of the largest and most economically critical ports. 2016 ......................................................................... 273,689 RAIL CARS TERMINATED IN WASHINGTON 2012 ......................................................................... 257,137 2013 ......................................................................... 266,776 2014 ......................................................................... 273,397 2015 ......................................................................... 250,613 2016 ......................................................................... 268,265 Northern Pacific Railroad, the first major railroad to cross into Washington, opened in 1880. Financier Henry Villard connected Northern Pacific with his Oregon Railway and Navigation Company (OR&N) soon afterward, helping to form a transcontinental link to Oregon and Washington. In 1896, OR&N became a subsidiary of Union Pacific and in 1910, trains began running from Portland to Seattle, thanks to an arrangement brokered by E.H. Harriman to give Union Pacific access to the Puget Sound using Northern Pacific tracks. That arrangement continues to this day, even though Northern Pacific has since merged with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
