Learn-Apply-Practise Comprehension K Have you ever watched a gymnast perform? They have grace and strength, yet they seem to make the activity look easy. The gymnast however, requires enormous strength, agility and indeed flexibility to perform their routines. At a gymnastic competition, the male athletes will perform the following activities: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. The female athletes will perform: vault, floor, balance beam and uneven bars. Although the floor exercises require no apparatus, it does demand the most grace and creativity. The floor area measures 39 feet long by 39 feet wide [12 metres by 12 metres]. Each gymnast MUST stay within the parameters of the area. If they stray outside the judges will deduct a mark from their overall score. The gymnast’s performance is referred to as a routine and must last between 50 and 70 seconds. Whilst the gymnast can be creative with the routine, there are certain moves that must be included. These include: somersaults, jumps, and handsprings. Each move must lead to the next naturally.
