4 December 2015 We are now into December and have lots of news to share with important information about our very first Christmas at Ocean Academy and it will be a busy and exciting one! Glitter and Glue Day Glitter and glue day was very successful – and glittery! Thanks to Mrs Simpson and the team for preparing and leading the day and to the parent and helper crew who did an amazing job keeping glitter under control and magically tidying up at the end of the day. Mr Mullins is very grateful! Christmas Tree We have been very lucky to be donated a beautiful Christmas Tree for our hall. Mr Rob Heron a Tree Surgeon who has done a lot of work around the site has kindly donated it to us. Thank You! Parents have also donated decorations and trees – thank you for these! The next two weeks are very busy as was mentioned in the last newsletter. Here are the events with a little more detail: Monday 7 December – Rippa Rugby sessions have now FINISHED. Wednesday 9 December – A small choir is singing at the Laurels Residential Home. The children involved will bring home a Permission Request letter separately. The choir have been practising at break times with Mrs Hay. Full uniform to be worn. 3.30pm – PTA Meeting – Help is needed for the last day of term! Thursday 10 December – We have been invited to take part in a very exciting opportunity to attend an introduction to coding at Barclays “Coding Playground” based in Bournemouth. We have been unable to secure a minibus however, and may need to request driving help from parents. We can take up to 15 children. There will be further opportunities in the new year so please don’t worry if your child is not picked this time. Children chosen will receive an individual letter/permission request. Friday 11 December – 9am Parent Forum 10am Deliver Christmas Tree to St James Church for Tree Festival We are all going on a walk to the Lighthouse Theatre in Poole to watch a performance of the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britian. We will leave at 1230 – children must have coats, sensible shoes and full uniform. Monday 14 December – Raffle tickets on sale in the foyer every morning – see PTA letter Tuesday 15 December – Rachel Jenkinson, artist, will be returning to work with a small group of children on a Titanic piece of art! Rachel will return in the future so all children will work with her over the year. Wednesday 16 December – Christmas Jumper Day. For one day replace the school jumper with a Christmas jumper in exchange for a selection box (which will be used in a tombola on the last day of term). Blazer will still be needed – only swop the jumper. Bring the selection box to the main foyer where there will be a table for the collection. At lunchtime, teachers will serve the children their Christmas dinner and sit with them to eat. There will be water or sugar free squash to drink. There will be a special visitor during the lunch! Children will make Christmas hats and placemats during the morning. (We have been asked if there will be crackers – sadly not as I can’t justify the budget!) Thursday 17 December – Party day. Children come to school in uniform but bring a party change of clothes (if desired) in a named carrier bag, to change in to after 1pm. Classes will play party games from 1.15 to 2.15 and then have playtime outside. From 2.30 until 3.30 there will be a film, squash or water, raisins, fruit, biscuits, cake, jelly and ice cream. Friday 18 December – Full uniform please – but tinsel may be added! AM Children will do final rehearsals After lunch: 1.30 Doors open for parents 1.40 Children to the stage 1.45 Presentation of our learning about the Titanic 2.15 Children sing carols, play recorders (audience participation!) 2.30 PTA Xmas mini fayre. There will be games and activities and refreshments on sale. Children will be able to buy tokens for the games and activities (see PTA letter for details). Parents may take children home for Christmas after the fair. The raffle will be drawn at 3.15pm. We understand that other schools close at 1pm so siblings are welcome to attend the performance too. It is a low key event as this has not been the highest priority for us this term. We know the children would love you to hear about their learning but we know many parents are working on that day. We will be recording the events for the website. In future years there will be a proper Christmas performance and accompanying DVD! If there are any further questions please ask! Snowline In the event of snow, we will endeavour to keep Ocean Academy open but our staff travel quite a distance to get here. If a decision has to be made to close the school it will be shared via text, email, the website and on the Borough of Poole website under the School Closures page. Sickness Policy To reduce bugs spreading please keep your child at home for 48 hours after the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea. Thank You! Gardening Are there any green fingered volunteers out there? Our next topic as you will see below is all about Healthy Living (fitness, exercise and nutrition) and “growing our own” as part of this. We would need a regular one/two hour a week assistance for the Spring/Summer terms to enable all children to have a go at gardening. Do you know anyone who might be interested? We would need to get a DBS check completed ready for January. A Tuesday afternoon is best for us but any day, any time would be amazing! Thank You! Spring Term Topic Healthy Me!
