Personal Narrative (15%)
Narrative” is a term more commonly known as “story.” Personal narratives tell a story,
usually to some point, to illustrate some truth or insight. Your narrative should have three parts:
introduction, body and conclusion.
The introduction should start with a statement “the Hook” about your story to catch your
reader’s attention (e.g., quote, question, statistics, etc.) Then, set the scene by providing relevant
information (e.g., who, what, when, etc.). Finally, clearly state your thesis statement, which begins
the events of your story.
The body of your personal narrative should have a detailed description of your story: (i)
what you heard, saw, and felt during the event; (ii) what lessons you learned, (iii) what happened
first, next, and last via the use of transition words such as next, finally, during, after, when, and
later.
The conclusion of a narrative should include the closing action of the event, but also
should include some reflection or analysis of the significance of the event to the writer. How has
what happened to you affected your life now?
