The Catholic Foundation 2013 Annual Report Votive “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” — Matthew 5:16 vo·tive | 'vōtiv | adjective: offered or consecrated in fulfillment of a vow. In our Catholic tradition, light has a special significance. We At The Catholic Foundation, your gift is one light among use lit candles at Mass, in liturgical processions, at prayer many. Together these gifts, no matter the size, help spread ceremonies, even in the sacrament of baptism, when the the Light of Christ throughout our Catholic community priest presents a candle lit from the Paschal candle and says, and beyond. At The Catholic Foundation it is our vow, our “This child of yours has been enlightened by Christ. He is to Votive, to steward these gifts well to provide for the walk always as a child of the light. May he keep the flame of long-term needs of the Diocese of Columbus, so that this faith alive in his heart.” light can continue to shine for generations to come. In fact, light is used in scripture as a symbol for many things: faith, truth, wisdom, virtue, grace, charity, and the presence of Christ. The prologue of the Gospel according to John states that “the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” Even the tiniest light in the darkness will not be overcome. Similarly, even the tiniest gift can have a lasting impact and help bring light to the recipient. Cover Significance This annual report cover embodies our Catholic faith. The three rings surrounding the Rose Window represent the Holy Trinity and the Easter Triduum. The circular shape symbolizes God’s endless love for us, as well as the endless support The Catholic Foundation gives to the community. The orange color signifies the Holy Spirit and closely resembles the color of fire, like the flame of a Votive candle. Letter from the CEO Dear friends in Christ, In his first encyclical, Lumen Fidei (“The Light of Faith”), Pope Francis says: “The light of faith is unique, since it is capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence. A light this powerful cannot come from ourselves but from a more primordial source: in a word, it must come from God.” As Catholics, we are all called to share in the Light of Christ and to let it guide us in our daily lives. As such, Psalm 119:150 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.” At The Catholic Foundation, we use your gifts to help spread the Light to those touched by the parishes, schools and ministries that we serve. In this past year, we were able to make over 900 grants amounting in nearly $6 million – the most we’ve ever distributed in the history of the Foundation. By the grace of God, and thanks to your generous contributions, we were able to accomplish this. In an effort to strengthen our vow and commitment to the Diocese of Columbus, we offer this Votive with the hopes that the stories on the following pages will inspire you and others to think about how you too can share the Light of Faith through The Catholic Foundation. Remember, we’re here to help connect your gift with our Catholic faith as we prepare for the future needs of our diocese. In Christ, Loren P. Letter From Our Bishop My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Jesus, according to the Gospel of John, proclaimed, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” As Catholics, we light a votive candle to shine the love of Jesus on a special petition. The candle continues to burn as a sign that prayers are being offered, even if we aren’t present. In a similar way, we can ensure that the Light of Christ is shared with future generations through an endowment with The Catholic Foundation. Even when we are no longer present in the earthly world, we can continue to share our gifts with the parishes, schools and ministries that do the work of God. Each year I witness the impact of the gifts from the generous men and women who have gone before us and I am reminded that all of us are capable of helping the organizations that we love, in our own unique way. Please pray about how you might help spread the Light to others, whether it is through the work you do today or the gifts you leave behind. Remember, The Catholic Foundation is here to guide you on the best path for your family. May God continue to bless and keep you. Our Catholic faith is instilled in us through the lessons and values we learn, not only in Catholic school, but in PSR programs, youth ministries, RCIA programs, adult Bible studies and other faith ministries. From our youngest, growing Catholics to our seasoned faithful, The Catholic Foundation supports all stages of faith formation. Preschool Students at St. Mary School, Lancaster Preschool Start-Up at St. Mary School in Lancaster After experiencing a sharp decline in enrollment over the years, St. Mary School needed a way to engage new families. A team compared enrollment numbers to parish census data and realized that the parish had over 180 children ages 0-5. However, many families were enrolling their children in Kindergarten programs directly linked to the local preschools they were attending. So, at the recommendation of the Fairfield Hocking Catholic Schools Executive Committee, the decision was made to open a preschool targeting the families of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish. St. Mary School already had space for the two new preschool classes, but they lacked developmentally appropriate learning center materials, preschool curriculum materials and even pint-sized furniture and facilities. With incredible support from St. Mary Parish, the school was able to renovate the restrooms in the primary building to make them age-appropriate. However, the school still needed to fill the preschool classrooms with materials. In early 2013, Erin Schornack, principal of St. Mary School, applied for a grant from The Catholic Foundation’s The Challenge in Changing Times responsive grants to help fulfill this need. St. Mary School was awarded a grant in June, and Erin worked quickly with her Preschool Director and staff to purchase furniture, books, puzzles, art supplies, blocks and the many other items needed to begin the school year. The first St. Mary School preschoolers started in August, and Erin expects both classes to be at capacity by the end of the year. Overall, the preschool is on the right path to success. To contribute to faith formation needs in the diocese, consider making a donation to our Support for Catholic Education Fund – this fund provides aid to Catholic schools and parish programs for religious education through our responsive Focus grants. In Newark, this problem is especially real as 20.1% of its residents fall below the federal poverty level, compared to 14.8% for the state. Six parishes in Licking County recognized a critical need for emergency shelter and a food pantry and, as a result, St. Vincent Haven opened its doors in 2010. St. Vincent Haven is a 26-bed emergency and transitional program that provides safe shelter and supportive services for men 18 and older who are homeless. Over 90% of residents are unemployed at intake and they often come from living on the street, under bridges, on floors or porches, or in their car. Case managers at St. Vincent Haven assist residents with developing an Exit Plan and Savings Plan, help identify job opportunities and apply for jobs, help to secure veterans and/or public benefits, provide referrals to other assistance agencies when needed, encourage residents to further their educational qualifications, and provide transportation to appointments in addition to meals, clothing and personal items. Since its inception, St. Vincent Haven has provided over 23,000 nights of safe shelter for over 500 residents. In order to continue providing much-needed services to men in Licking County, St. Vincent Haven seeks funding from multiple sources, including from local parishes, grant partners and community fundraising efforts. In 2013, The Catholic Foundation awarded St. Vincent Haven a The Challenge in Changing Times grant to help fund programming and a Focus grant to purchase an emergency generator after a 5-day power outage caused the shelter to lose security monitoring and phone systems, in addition to losing perishable food. Responsive Grants Each year, The Catholic Foundation awards need-based grants to the parishes, schools, and select social service agencies within the 23-county Diocese of Columbus, Ohio. The Catholic Foundation supports its responsive grant process with two sources of funding: The Challenge in Changing Times grants and Focus grants. The Foundation gratefully accepts donations of any amount to support the following Focus grants funds: • Support for Catholic Charities Fund • Support for Parishes Fund • Support for Vocations Fund • Support for Catholic Education Fund • Respect Life Fund Linda Berger, Executive Director, with an intern from Ohio University St. Vincent Haven, Newark SOCIAL SERVICES “Whatever you did for the least of these… you did for me”. – Matthew 25:40. Social services are the way God calls us to serve others. These vital services provide food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, medicine for the sick and hope for those in despair. As Catholics, we are called to engage in charity and to help the less fortunate. Judy Dixon, Director of the Pike County Outreach Council St. Mary Queen of the Missions Parish, Waverly The Pike County Outreach Council At 12.1%, Pike County has the second highest unemployment rate in Ohio. Along with that, 22.5% of the county’s population falls below the poverty line (compared to 14.8% for the state). With a clear need for assistance in this historically depressed community, St. Mary Queen of the Missions Parish, along with two other local churches, established the Pike County Outreach Council in 1968. Over the last 45 years, the Pike County Outreach Council worked to house the homeless and feed the hungry through their Choice Food Pantry and the Bridgehaven Homeless Shelter. In 2012, the Council reached historic numbers: the food pantry provided over 37,000 meals and the shelter housed 147 people, including 37 children. This year is on-pace to meet or exceed those numbers. As the Director of the Pike County Outreach Council and St. Mary parishioner, Judy Dixon works tirelessly to provide these services to the community in need. She is also implementing additional programs to help with everyday needs in emergency situations, as well as provide supplemental food to high school students who face going hungry all weekend without school meals. “Pike County residents really care about the community, and they help their neighbors,” Judy explained. “If we let people know there is a need, it often shows up for us.” St. Mary Queen of the Missions Parish in Waverly recently received a grant from The Catholic Foundation’s The Challenge in Changing Times grants to help provide financial support to the Pike County Outreach Council and this community in need. Richard & Kathleen Gummer Donor Advised Funds Rick and Kathleen Gummer, of Gummer Wholesale in Heath, are no strangers to charitable giving. In fact, they’ve been working with The Catholic Foundation for nearly 20 years. Between various trusts and three donor advised funds, they are able to easily manage their financial contributions through one source. “We use The Catholic Foundation because of our faith and our beliefs,” Rick said. “Not to mention, the staff are willing to help in any way they can. They help you through the process and make it easy.” Rick and Kathleen use the Richard Gummer Family Donor Advised Fund to facilitate contributions to the organizations they typically give to each year. Similarly, a group of employees at Gummer Wholesale uses the Charles M. Gummer Donor Advised Fund to give back to the community on behalf of the company. Therefore, it was a natural fit for their three children, Rich, Chad and Kate, to open a fund at The Catholic Foundation in memory of Kathleen’s mother. The Mary Kane Lefever Donor Advised Fund is used primarily to help with the tuition assistance needs at St. Leonard’s Parish in Heath, where Kathleen’s mother was a parishioner. “We were thrilled when our children wanted to open a fund at The Catholic Foundation,” Kathleen shared. “That is something the family should share.” Donor advised funds are just one way in which to share in charitable giving with your family. Visit our website at catholic-foundation.org or contact us directly to help you determine which tool is best for you! Donor Advised Fund Giving becomes convenient and personal with a Donor Advised Fund, which offers a hands-on approach to philanthropy. A Donor Advised Fund allows you the opportunity to make contributions to multiple Catholic or public organizations from one account. Consider a Donor Advised Fund if you: • Give to multiple organizations throughout the year • Make a charitable contribution now and decide where distributions should go over time • Desire simplicity and ease Rick & Kathleen Gummer St. Francis de Sales Parish, Newark VOCATIONS Vocations are what we are called by God to do with our lives. For many of us, marriage is a vocation. Religious Life and Holy Orders are also vocations, and a very special part of the church. From Engaged Encounter and marriage preparation to seminary and religious orders, The Catholic Foundation supports all types of vocations. Serra Club of North Columbus Executive Team at the Pontifical College Josephinum Serra Club of North Columbus Endowment Established in 1996, the Serra Club of North Columbus is the second of four chapters in the Diocese of Columbus. The mission of all Serra Clubs is the promotion and support of religious vocations through prayer, education and personal growth in the Catholic Faith. In keeping with this mission, the Serra Club of North Columbus created the Life Awareness Youth Luncheons as the major project for its members. Twice per year, the Serra Club of North Columbus presents the Life Awareness Youth Luncheons for 8th grade and high school students in the Diocese of Columbus. The goal of these luncheons is to offer students direction in discerning their life vocation. The event features a speaker who talks to the students about vocations and religious life – typically a priest for the boys’ luncheon and a religious sister for the girls’ luncheon. The luncheons, started in 2000, were originally held for about 60 boys from diocesan high schools. Over the years, the luncheons quickly grew to what they are today, with 175 – 200 attendees at each event. After seeing the value in providing these sessions for teenagers in their formative years, an anonymous donor started the Serra Club of North Columbus Endowment Fund to ensure that financial support would be in place for the Life Awareness Youth Luncheons for many years to come. To show your support for the Life Awareness Youth Luncheons, you can contribute to the Serra Club of North Columbus Endowment Fund by visiting: www.catholic-foundation.org/SerraClubofNorthColumbus David & Barb Garick Holy Land Endowment Fund On a recent trip to the Holy Land, Dave and Barb Garick saw firsthand the struggles that the Christian community endures as a minority living in the region. The community relies on outside support to help provide for education, decent housing and job opportunities, but they still struggle to create a good life for themselves. As a result, the number of Christians continues to dwindle, now making up less than 2% of the population in the Holy Land. Nurturing the Christian community in the area where our Catholic faith was founded was always a priority for the Garicks. Even as long-time supporters of the preservation of the Holy sites, they knew they wanted to do more. Dave and Barb didn’t want their work to end when their earthly lives ended, so they opened an endowment fund with The Catholic Foundation in order to provide assistance to the region indefinitely. “Just because we pass, doesn’t mean we should stop being able to make a difference,” they stated. “These are the things we think are most important, and that is where we want our estate to go.” The David & Barb Garick Holy Land Endowment Fund will provide a perpetual source of funds to aid in the protection and preservation of the holy sites located in the Holy Land and to nurture and promote the housing, education, job development and health care within the Christian Community residing in the Holy Land. Anyone can contribute to this fund by visiting www.catholic-foundation.org/HolyLandEndowment. Endowment Fund An Endowment Fund provides an annual source of funding to a Catholic organization of your choice. This fund is designed to function in perpetuity, making it possible for you to ensure long-term financial support to your chosen cause. Once established, anyone can make additional contributions to the fund in any dollar amount. Consider an Endowment Fund if you: • Want to honor or memorialize a loved one • Seek to establish a lasting legacy of faith • Wish to support your chosen organization or cause in perpetuity Dave & Barb Garick on Mount Carmel, overlooking the city of Haifa PARISH LIFE Our parishes give us a place to gather, a sense of community and a tangible home for our faith. The needs of a parish are great, from the capital required to operate the facility to staff needed to oversee the day-to-day operations. Endowment support helps assure that our parishes will be used for generations to come. Front of Immaculate Conception Parish in Kenton Immaculate Conception Parish in Kenton In preparation for the 150th Anniversary of Immaculate Conception’s dedication in 2016, the parish began the major task of renovating the interior of the church. The drop ceiling and plaster walls were deteriorated to the point of pieces falling off and the church was also in need of new flooring and improved handicapped accessibility. To fund the renovations, parishioners came together and raised a significant amount of money through the capital improvement campaign, Secure Our Future… Preserve Our Past. However, as the work began, it became clear that exterior brick repairs were also needed to protect the interior investment. This project that started out as an interior renovation quickly turned into a significant structural repair project. The parish dipped into the campaign funds to repair one side of the building, but knew that any additional repair would jeopardize the interior renovation project. Yet without the completed repairs, the interior renovation was at risk of damage due to moisture. The parishioners of Immaculate Conception had worked so hard to raise funds to preserve their church, but now they faced the possibility of being unable to move forward with the renovation. Then, in early 2013, Immaculate Conception received funding from The Catholic Foundation’s The Challenge in Changing Times grants to complete additional exterior brick repairs. The church still has additional repairs to complete, but The Catholic Foundation was able to help in a time of need and put Immaculate Conception one step closer to preserving the church for future generations. To show your support for Immaculate Conception Parish, you can contribute to their parish endowment fund at www.catholic-foundation.org/ImmaculateConceptionKenton. The Allyson Marie Gross Memorial Scholarship Allyson Gross had a passion for life unlike no other – she was full of zeal and had an infectious laugh that drew others to her. After graduating from the EW Scripps College of Journalism at Ohio University, Allyson moved to New York to pursue writing and modeling careers. A self-proclaimed perfectionist, she worked diligently in pursuit of her dreams – eventually to the point of exhaustion and hospitalization. It was then that doctors discovered Allyson had a hole in her heart that needed repair. Allyson approached the surgery just as she approached anything else in life – head-on and with a positive attitude. On January 6, 2009, she underwent a successful open-heart surgery and was discharged from the hospital one week later. However, on January 20, 2009, Allyson died suddenly from a rare infection, leaving her family, fiancé and friends simply devastated. In the weeks and months following her death, Allyson’s family mourned their loss and searched for a way to keep her memory alive. Bobbi May-Gross, Allyson’s mother, Barb Wilt, Allyson’s aunt, and Lauren Gross, Allyson’s sister, put all of their effort into raising money to fund a scholarship. From a 5K race to social fundraising events to Allyson’s friends donating every scrap they could come up with, the family raised over $40,000. They established the Allyson Marie Gross Memorial Scholarship as a way to remember her legacy in perpetuity. “Years from now, somebody will be saying her name,” explained Bobbi. “This is a way for us to do something for her.” The Allyson Marie Gross Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student from St. Michael School who intends to continue his/her education at Bishop Watterson High School. Through an essay application, this student must demonstrate a talent and passion for writing, and an ability to inspire others through their words – much like Allyson did throughout her life. To learn more about Allyson’s life and legacy, please visit: www.catholic-foundation.org/AllysonGrossStory. Scholarship Fund A Scholarship Fund can help students achieve their educational goals. He was named proctor of Cambridge University, and appointed confessor to Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VIII. He became closely associated with her endowments at Cambridge, where he also created scholarships, introduced Greek and Hebrew into the curriculum and brought in the world-famous Erasmus as a professor of Divinity and Greek.
