Monday
Standard/Objective: Describe the role of geography in shaping ancient Greek culture
and government
6-2.1 Describe the development of ancient Greek culture (the Hellenic period), including
the concept of citizenship and the early forms of democracy in Athens.

discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade 6
topics, texts, and issues

that contribute to the topic, text, or issue under discussion

CCSS.ELA-Literacy in History RI6.1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the
text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text
Plan for the day:
1. First Five– Name the 3 seas surrounding Greece.
2. Students will work with a partner to finish labeling the Ancient Greece map, locating
Greece, the Mediterranean Sea, Ionian Sea, and Aegean Sea, Europe, Asia Minor, Crete,
Macedonia, Troy, Athens, and Sparta.
3. Teacher will use the SMART document camera to display a completed map to the
smart board and review the correct locations on the map.
4. Students will check and correct their maps of Greece.
5. Students will mark their maps with the locations they need to know for the Chapter 8
quiz and test (Greece, Crete, Peloponnesus, Ionian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Aegean
Sea) and the ones they need for Chapter 9 quiz and test (Sparta, Athens, Troy, Greece,
Mediterranean Sea, Asia Minor, Macedonia, Europe)
6. Students will use the map to compare Greek geography to other civilizations studied
so far this year, explaining similarities and differences.
7. Teacher will introduce Greek (Athenian) government by discussing US government.
8. Students will read Chapter 8, Section 2 in the textbook and begin filling in their notes.

1. First Five - How did geography affect the development of Greek civilization?
2. Students will complete a vocabulary review from the smart board to prepare for
the quiz on Wednesday.
3. Teacher will review answers to the Section 2 study guide, discussing the creation
of the world’s first democratic government in Athens using the Ch 8 power point.
4. Students will check their answer from the smart board.
5. Students will draw a Venn Diagram and note ways US democracy and democracy
in Athens are similar and different.
6. Students will share similarities and differences with class.
7. Teacher will record answers on the smart board.

3. Teacher will review Greek literature, including mythology, poetry, and fables, using the Ch
8 power point.
4. Students will check and correct Section 3 study guide answers.

5. Students will watch the Time Warp Trio – My Big Fat Greek Olympian
