ABOUT WALLY
HAYWARD
Wally Hayward's exceptional running career
spanned six decades, and although he
represented South Africa at the Olympic
Games and set numerous ultra-distance
world records, he is best remembered for his
remarkable achievements in the Comrades
Marathon, which he won five times and ran at
79 and 80.
In 1930, Wally entered his first Comrades
Marathon when only 21. He had a 29 minute
lead by half way but was running in heavy
solid rubber soled canvas tackies, had put
too much boracic powder in his socks (which
wore away his feet like sandpaper) and he
only stopped to drink every 30 KM - but he
hung on courage-ously and managed to win
by just 37 seconds in 7:27:26.
Having broken his right ankle during a
training run just before the 1931 Comrades,
Wally was forced to miss it and then
concentrated instead on shorter distances
for the next several years.
In 1950, Wally returned to Comrades and
again strode to victory. The following year he
made it three wins in three appearances, and
sliced a massive eight minutes off the record.
After finishing tenth in the marathon at the
1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, Wally
returned to secure his fourth Comrades title
in 1953, becoming the first athlete to break
six hours as he won the 'down' race in
5:52:30.
On 26 September 1953, at 45, Wally
shattered the 80 Km London-to-Brighton record by 22:42, winning in 5:29:40. He also established his first World record for 50
miles (5:14:12) along the way. On 24 October 1953, Wally broke fellow Comrades hero Hardy Ballington's World 100 mile record
at Bath in England, by more than an hour, in 12:20:28 (a record which remained unbroken for 15 years!).
On 20 November 1953, Wally set out after Arthur Newton's 24 hour record. Along the way Wally passed 100 Km in a new world
record of 7:41:36 (which stood unbroken for 16 years) as well as 100 miles in another world track record time of 12:46:34 (which
was unbroken for 15 years). Despite being slowed by tightening muscles and cramping after an unfortunate shower at 160 Km, which reduced the 150 Km he had covered in the first 12 hours to "only" 106 Km in the last 12 hours - he still managed to complete
256,4 Km in 24 hours, improving 11,3 Km on the great Newton's old world record and despite his difficulties, this World record
was only beaten 26 years later, in 1979!
In 1954, one month before his 46th birthday, Wally became the oldest participant in the history of the Comrades Marathon to win
this grueling event, winning for the fifth time in a new "up" record (by more than 19 minutes) in 6:12:55 - achieving his ambition of
holding both the up & down.
Although the South African Amateur Athletic & Cycling Association had granted permission to his club, to raise funds for this
record breaking trip to England, Wally had unwittingly broken the rules by directly accepting donations towards his travelling
expenses and he was declared a professional and banned from participating in amateur events, such as Comrades. Wally's
amateur status was reinstated 20 years later - so, in 1978 he set a world marathon age record of 3:06:24 for 70 year olds!
Probably the most remarkable achievement of the great Wally Hayward was finishing the 1988 Comrades Marathon, just before
his 80th birthday! Wally stunned the world by finishing in a time of 9:44:15 - beating more than half the field! In 1989, just a few
weeks short of his 81st birthday, he completed Comrades just before the cut-off, in 10:58:03 in front of a rapturous crowd to
become the oldest finisher in Comrades history.
Wally was a carpenter and draughtsman for the Johannesburg Municipality most of his working life. He died on 28 April 2006, at
the age of 97, a couple of days before the Wally Hayward Marathon that year, which was held, as always, on 1 May.
