The stunning natural scenery of Etretat and Le Havre inspired a number of Impressionist painters. Away from the capital
and the artificial light of their studios, they were free to try and capture the fleeting beauty of the Alabaster Coast
landscapes with their subtly shifting clouds, endless reflections in water and dramatic changes of light.
9.30 a.m. Guided tour "In the Footsteps of the Avant-garde Painters, from the Pre-Impressionists to the
Fauvists"
This unusual tour offers a chance to compare great paintings with the unique light and scenery that inspired them. Inside
the Musée Malraux, a stylish glass building overlooking the outer harbour of Le Havre, is one of the most biggest
collections of Impressionist and Fauvist paintings in France, including works by Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and
Camille Pissarro.
A short walk along the seafront takes you back in time to the "world's end" − the maritime scenery painted by Courbet
and Dufy and the seaside villas of "Le Havre's answer to Nice" depicted by painter Othon Friesz − following in the
footsteps of the artists who produced the first modern paintings.
12.30 p.m. Lunch in a restaurant in Le Havre
3.00 p.m. Guided tour of Etretat
Once a fishing village known for its spectacular cliffs bathed in dazzling light, these days, Etretat is a world-famous
seaside resort. Etretat's romantic cliff landscapes have inspired eminent creative artists from all disciplines − composers
like Messager and Offenbach, well-known writers such as Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, Maurice Leblanc and
Algernon Swinburne, and of course painters. Monet, Boudin, Corot, Manet and Courbet produced many paintings of
Etretat. During the tour, you will learn the history and legends of Etretat and take in sights such as the Falaise d'Aval (the
famous marine march) and the Falaise d•Amont, the Nungesser and Coli Monument, the seafarers' chapel, the town
centre, with its old covered market, and the medieval Manoir de la Salamandre.
4.30 p.m. Tour ends.
