Alleluia!
Is that what I think it is? Yes, it’s not very often that you see a picture of an
open coffin. Much less, do you see a picture of an open coffin under the
title, “Alleluia!”
Be assured, this picture isn’t some cruel joke. They say that a picture is
worth a thousand words. What does this picture say?
I took this picture one year ago in April. It’s a picture of our brother in Christ, Ed Felauer. Ed was a rather
boisterous man. There were times that he would come to church over an hour early on Thursday evenings.
Sometimes I’d be trying to polish my sermon for 7:00 p.m. worship, and there’d be Ed at 5:45 p.m. Sometimes
he’d voice his disapproval with a touch of volume – “The print is too small… I can’t hear a thing you guys are
saying… the sun is too bright.” Like I said, he was a boisterous man.
But as big as his opinions were, so was his heart. This same guy, who on occasion chewed us out, is the same
guy who loaded up the back of his pick-up truck with meat for the entire Immanuel staff. Ed is the guy who
every few weeks would stop by the office with bananas or cabbage for the cafeteria. He’d be the guy on the
front row bleacher at the FVL football game, cheering on his grandson. And he was the guy who kept coming
to worship at 5:45 p.m., no longer to chew us out, but to read the large-print sermon (specially printed) ahead
of time so he could get more out of the service and to read the Bible until the other worshipers came. That is
why I took this picture.
Having the privilege of serving thousands of people with the gospel, I often get “boxseat” views of seeing how the gospel works on people and changes their lives. I saw
how the gospel motivated a man like Ed to serve – whether it was in the war or for the
people who brought him the gospel. I saw how the gospel made him befriend even the
littlest of worshipers at church. I saw how the gospel dried his tears when his wife
passed away just 38 days prior to him. Simply put, I saw how the gospel was “alive and
active” (Hebrews 4:12) in his life. And when I see a picture of him, resting at peace under
the outstretched arms of his loving Savior, all I can think is, “Alleluia!” Praise be to God
for the way he worked on this man’s heart and for taking him home.
While Ed was unique in many ways, the way the gospel worked on his heart is not unique. The following pages
are testimony to how God works on the hearts of all of us. As you read the stories and reports, join me in
thanking God. Thank him for the way he brings people here to gather around his Word. Thank him for the way
that people here grow as God’s Word works on their hearts. Thank him for the various ways that people go
from here, motivated by the gospel to serve others. Thank him, that through the Gospel, the next 14 pages
are not so much about Immanuel – “God with us” in Greenville, rather, they are activities that God uses to
keep people close to himself until Immanuel – “God with us” in heaven. There we’ll join Ed and every other
believer who has gone before us and sing, “Alleluia!” Ultimately, that’s what ministry is all about.

A Challenge Recognized By a Member
“I love our worship space, but it feels like there should be
somewhere to go after the service. It’s like you ask,
‘Where do you go from here?’ It would be a tremendous
blessing to have a fellowship space and a better
learning environment.”
Our Sunday Morning Youth Ministry
We have 374 children between the
ages of 3 and 11. In the current session
of Kids’ G.R.O.W., we average 46 in
attendance for that age group.
Please pray for this ministry. Specific
things to pray about:
 Patience and preparation of the
teachers and assistants. Give them
joy in service and help our
congregation encourage them.
 Pray that children learn the basic
Bible stories, whether it is at home or
through Kids’ G.R.O.W., as this builds
a foundation for their spiritual life.
 Pray that we all prioritize growing in
God’s Word.

 91 out of 106 eligible students were randomly selected to receive a voucher through the Choice
program. Statewide, the number of vouchers available will double next year.
 Next year’s enrollment projection is 600 students, which includes 50 international students.
“Growing in Grace” Debt Expected to Be Eliminated
The current FVL campus opened in the fall of 2000. As planned, the capital costs have not been included
in the cost of tuition. In May of 2018, God-willing, the original debt of nearly $20M will completely be
eliminated. We thank God for the gifts God’s people have given in the past and we pray that support
continues so we can burn that mortgage in May.
TEEN MINISTRY UPDATE
For the past few years, area congregations have attempted to offer an area-wide
teen ministry at Copper Rock on College Avenue. We thank Pastor Gebert
(Bethany) for his tremendous planning and work. Currently, it is not achieving its
goals and we are evaluating our next steps. If you are interested in assisting with
our teen ministry, contact Pastor Moldenhauer.

A Prayer for Immanuel Lutheran School
Heavenly Father, Your mercies are new each morning, LORD, but your Word is unchanging. My prayer for ILS is that you
continue to generously bless us in the future; as you have blessed us over the last 40 years of partnering with parents to
provide quality Christian education. The emphasis has been on what Jesus has done for us, and it should remain there. Our
mission of “Training children for now and for eternity” is fitting, as the focus remains with the salvation we receive through
your grace – and the sacrifice of Jesus, your Son. Thank you Father, for the dedicated faculty, staff, and devoted parents
who tirelessly work together to enrich our school’s children through quality academic instruction while also nurturing a strong
Christian faith. All this, along with the generous support of the whole congregation at Immanuel Lutheran Church, is truly a
great blessing!

Vicar in Mission Setting
In August, we said good-bye to our second “Vicar in Mission Setting,”Julius Buelow. We thank God for his
leadership in Go Ministry during the pastoral vacancy. God-willing, our congregation will participate in
this program in the near future.
Guest Survey Implemented
In February, we debuted a new digital survey intended for first-time visitors. It serves as another means of
contact with those who check out Immanuel for the first time, while providing valuable feedback.

Adult Confirmations
One of the most significant numbers in a church’s annual
report is the number of adult confirmations. Each number
represents a soul who either did not know Jesus the
previous year or who had not known God’s Word in its
truth and purity. We rejoice that the Holy Spirit blessed us
to witness 52 adults confess their faith this past year.

IN YOUR OWN WORDS
At a January gathering, Immanuel members answered the following
question:
Why do you consider the ministry at Immanuel a
good investment of your time and resources?


“I feel I can make more of an impact with my
dollars when I look at my community.
Immanuel has an opportunity to help create/
shape a community of faith.” -- Jim
“Simply looking at the adult confirmations
we’ve had the past 5+ years shows there is
definitely a need in our area. It would be
sinful not to take advantage of the
opportunity we have now.” -- Judy
If you could communicate anything to people
about the idea of living a generous life, what
would it be?

“We grow by giving of ourselves.”

“My giving fills a void in my life knowing that it
is a good cause and a comfort knowing that
Immanuel uses my generosity wisely.”

“It’s like leaning forward on skis. It becomes
easier to lean more forward each time,
learning to trust.” -- Sean
Firstfruits
The regular offerings received on a weekly
basis. Called “firstfruit” as God teaches us to
give to him first, showing our trust and love for
him.
After two-thirds of the year (67%), offerings are
at about 64% of budgeted, about $55,000 less
than planned and slightly below last year’s
support. Thankfully, aggressively paying down
the mortgage has helped us save on interest.
Likewise, healthcare insurance for 2016 was
less than budgeted, minimizing impact on
ministry.
Tuition
Our congregation was able to grant more
than $3,000/student this year, subsidizing
about 60% of education costs.

Dear Lord of the Church,
You are the Giver of all gifts. We thank you for the many ways in which you have richly provided for our
bodily and spiritual welfare. Help us to see the opportunities and privilege we have of using those gifts to
your glory. Move our hearts to support the ministry of our congregation. Give us confidence that you are
with us as we gather, grow, and go with your life-saving Word. Amen.
