We honor in a special way all those who have a ministerial role in passing along the faith. While we realize that parents have a primary role in the faith formation of their families, the people listed on the front of the bulletin have answered the call to assist in the religious education of many children, teens and adults in our parish. We are grateful for all who share their faith in this special way with our parishioners, and we ask God to continue to bless and strengthen all who have taken on a catechetical role. Inherent in the role of catechesis is being attuned to the dignity of every human person, for each person is created in the image and likeness of God who calls each of us to an intimate relationship with Himself. Please keep our catechists and all whose lives they touch in your prayers as we continue to build a community of faith, love and service. (If we have inadvertently left off anyone’s name, please understand that this was an oversight, and please know that we do value the contributions you make to our parish by way of catechesis.) Who’s Who AN INVITATION TO COME AND SEE RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. RCIA is an opportunity for those who: •Have never been baptized. •Have been baptized in the Catholic Church or another Christian church and have little or no religious affiliation since then. •Have been baptized and wish to receive First Communion and/or Confirmation for the first time. •Have been practicing in another faith tradition and who wish to inquire about becoming Catholic. RCIA is the Catholic Church’s way of introducing herself to interested inquirers. For those who wish to continue after their initial inquiry which requires no commitment at this time, the process becomes an ongoing journey leading to initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Sessions are held regularly with parish leaders and others who are journeying together. They involve faith sharing, reflection and learning. There is a commercial on television where a rather forward man approaches a man reading a newspaper and loudly declares, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know!” The man reading the paper calmly replies, “I know you, and it’s not helping.” In our spiritual lives, our boisterous friend may be right, if who you know is Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Thomas A. Kempis wrote in his book, "The Imitation of Christ", that gaining great knowledge won’t get you to heaven as much as getting to know, love and serve Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Come to Holy Family Chapel and develop a relationship with the Blessed Sacrament. If you can, call Bill Beckman at (708) 429-2762 and sign up to spend an hour with the Blessed Sacrament every week. It’s the best hour each week you’ll ever spend. Someday, you’ll look at the Blessed Sacrament and proclaim, “I know You, and it’s helping more than I ever imagined. Terry Dorencz Perhaps you have questions yourself about this process or you may know someone who is waiting for this invitation. Call the rectory at (708) 532-2243 and ask for Fr. Tomy. The purpose of the Pastoral Council is to advise the Pastor. The Council is concerned with the overall pastoral well being of the Parish. The members are confirmed parishioners of St. George, who regularly attend mass, exhibit leadership qualities and are actively involved in a ministry. We are happy to announce the following members who discern to this role: Lori Kaminski I am now entering my second year as a member of the Pastoral Council. The first year was very interesting and rewarding and I look forward to another great year on the council. I have been a parishioner at St. George for over 35 years. I didn’t get involved for several years until Father Cahill encouraged me to be a Catechist. For several years, I enjoyed teaching first graders and helping out in the Religious Education office. Soon after becoming a Catechist, I also became a Eucharistic Minister which I continue to do. After leaving Religious Education, I helped out on a couple of committees, such as the 75th Anniversary Book. Over the last couple of years, I came back to Religious Education not as a Catechist, but as a member of the Religious Education Board. A couple of years ago, I was mandated as a Minister of Care. I am and have been blessed to participate in all of these Ministries and Committees. Tom Vander Sanden Tom and his wife Carol have been married for 52 years and parishioners at St. George since 1958. They have six children and eleven grandchildren. He has been active in a number of ministries at St. George including Ushering, Eucharistic Minister of Communion, Family Ministry, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He will be entering his second year as a Pastoral Council member. When I joined the Council last year my objective was to learn more about how the Council interacts with the various Parish Ministries, enhance my spiritual life and use my life experience to contribute where possible as a Council Member. The first year was very interesting and fulfilling and now I look forward to expand my contributions to the Parish Council and assist the Parish Ministries wherever possible. Arlene Astrowski As I start my third year on the Pastoral Council I am so grateful that when I retired two and half years ago Fr. Fleck asked me to consider being on the council. It was hard this past year being involved with parish life as I watched my dear husband Len slowly succumb to pancreatic and liver cancer. Len died on February 6 and I cannot thank the Pastoral and Parish staff for all their support and love through this rough period. This is a community and the idea of giving a little of your time to help your church family is worth it. Len and I have been involved in most ministries throughout our 40 years as members of St. George. This is our church family and as in any family you have to take time to build relationships. I was involved with religious education for many years and my students felt they didn’t know God. I used to tell them to treat God as a good friend and if you have a good friend you want to spend time with them, you call and talk to them (prayer), you learn about them (the Bible), you spend time with them (liturgy, prayer services, adoration chapel). You see it’s not complicated to be involved you just need to make the commitment. Pray about joining us as a member of the council, we can always use more help. Your sister in Christ. Deb Lettiere I came from the city and for twentyfive years I was involved with my parish at the time, St. Mary Star of the Sea. I moved to Tinley Park seventeen years ago and attended other churches in the area. I missed not being part of the community and parish life. For the past three years I have been attending St. George and became a parishioner because I felt like I finally found a home here at St George. I have two children and four grandchildren. My first and second year on Parish Council I learned a lot about the parish and have meet so many wonderful people. I am looking forward to another year being an active member and serving on the Parish Council. Leslie Vaicik Hi! My name is Leslie Vaicik. I have been a parishioner for forty years and am fortunate enough to have three adult children and four granddaughters. I have been involved at St George in many capacities from religious education to helping plan our renovation of St. George and the Cahill Center. This is my second year on the PPC and am enjoying my time spent on this committee and look forward to helping create an even better St. George for future generations. 8 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church • Tinley Park, IL 60477 Sue Sharp I first joined St. George Parish in 1991. I was here until 1993 when a move took me back home to St. John’s Parish in Glenwood, Illinois. I returned back to St. George in 1999 after getting married. Today I am a single working mom and have a teenage daughter, Jane. We have both been involved in the Parish through being on the Parish Registration Team since 2007. I am currently the Parish Registration Team Leader, a Eucharistic Minister, Eucharistic Adoration Chapel Adorer, part of the Catholic Identity Group and I help at Bingo once a month. I was asked to join the Parish Council about a year and a half ago. I decided to decline since it would be my daughters eighth grade year at St. George School and I wanted to be available to her and all her eighth grade activities. Then this past Spring I heard the announcement about the Parish Council Information Luncheon and when I checked the date I saw that I was unavailable to attend. I thought, sorry God I can’t do it again, I already have plans. Then I got a phone call and my family wanted to change the plans we had on the day of the luncheon. Suddenly I was available. I went to the luncheon and then did some praying and discerning about joining the council. I love it when I have my plans all set and then God shows me His plan. I also love it that I’m learning to see and follow His plan. I look forward to the coming years of serving on the Parish Council. God Bless, Sue Sharp Kris Hattendorf Hi my name is Kris Hattendorf. I am a retired Telecommunications Analyst and am currently a full time babysitter for the three youngest of my nine grandchildren. Although I’m exhausted at the end of my day, they bring me such joy, love and laughter! This is my second year as a member of the St. George Pastoral Council and I am looking forward to some very interesting projects we have in store for us. The council has opened my eyes to all of the underlying tasks that need to be addressed in order for our parish to thrive and grow. Please keep us in your prayers throughout the year! Rich and Lynda O’Brien We have parishioners for twenty years. We have two grown children. We are both retired. Rich was a stationary engineer and Lynda was a physical education teacher. Since we retired we feel that we have more time to dedicate to the parish, so we decided to join the Parish Council. Jane Sharp Hi I am Jane Sharp! I attended St. George School first through eighth grade. I am currently a freshman at Providence Catholic High School. I will be going on the NCYC trip this November, and I look forward to sharing my experience when I get back. At St. George Church I am involved in Parish Registration, Altar Serving, Altar Sever Training and I am a Lector. At Providence I am getting involved in Habitat for Humanity, Respect for Life, and Augustinian Youth Ministry. I also volunteer at P.A.W.S every Friday night. I cannot really explain why I joined Parish Council, just like I do not know why I wanted to go to Providence. I do not really have a reason, but I had more of a feeling. I felt it was right for me and it is where I should be. I believe God has led me towards Parish Council, just like he led me to Providence. I would like to end in this Augustinian Prayer, “Direct we beseech you, O Lord, all our actions by Your holy inspiration and carry them out by Your gracious assistance so that every prayer and good work of ours may always begin from You and by You be happily ended through Christ our Lord. Amen.” Roxanne Sanderson My name is Roxane Sanderson, I have been a St. George parishioner for eighteen years, however, parish community life has always been a part of my life. I grew up in Chicago and have always identified my location by my parish which was Nativity of Our Lord—Mayor Daley’s old parish. My parents instilled a sense of church community from a very young age. They were both very involved in church ministries. Amongst many other things my father was in charge of all the lectors at church. He found that they had a shortage of volunteers and I wanted to read from the altar, but at that time it was not allowed. With permission from my pastor I was allowed to be the first female on the altar and I was only fifteen years old. In my early twenties I joined a young adult retreat program called Search for Christian Community. In 1990 I moved to St. Linus Parish where I became one of the youth ministers. I am still single and I live with my mother. I am the Director of Physician Services at Silver Cross Hospital. My most proud moments have been recruiting five physicians to Silver Cross who were once teenagers in my youth groups. There will be a second collection next weekend, The Seminarian Education Fund collection, which will go specifically to the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. This years’ collection puts more emphasis on the seminarians. The hope is to ensure the vitality of our priest formation programs and bring more connection between the people and their future. The funds help to underwrite archdiocesan costs related to tuition and fees, and other formation programs for these men. September 20, 2015 • Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 9 Archbishop Fulton Sheen Museum Bus Trip The next St. George bus pilgrimage will take place on Tuesday, October 6 to The Archbishop Fulton Sheen Museum, 419 NE Madison Ave., Peoria, IL 61603. The cost is $20 for the bus which will leave from St. George at 8:00 am and return around 4:00 pm. One may bring a bag lunch or purchase a meal from the cafeteria. Please register for this trip at the rectory office by September 25. All fees are due at time of registration. The Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Museum closely cooperates with the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation and the Diocesan Museum and archives. Fulton Sheen never forgot his Peoria roots and his home diocese. His museum is located in the Spalding Pastoral Center on the same historic campus where he graduated from the Cathedral grade school and Spalding High School. Only one block away stands the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, where young Fulton Sheen learned to serve Mass and was ordained a priest on September 20, 1919. The Sheen Museum is maintained by the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation and with pride displays a wide variety of artifacts from the Archbishop's life which are housed in several collections. The exhibit includes writings, books, photos, a selection of his vestments and Episcopal regalia and many other artifacts displayed through the generosity of various donors. The Archbishop Fulton J. I was four years old, and my sister was only two . . .” The Orphan Trains moved children out of New York City, traveling to the Midwest and beyond. Some children had a wonderful life with their new family, while others were not so fortunate. Some children disappeared into the countryside; others became prominent citizens, politicians and family members. The Orphan Trains were a project conceived by the Rev. Charles Loring Brace of the New York Children’s Aid Society with the goal of moving the homeless and helpless children from the streets of the city and finding them homes in more rural areas of the Midwest and West.... Before long, other charitable organizations in New York and Boston had joined the program, and by the end of the 1800s, charities in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois adopted the program and sent children to states farther west. Between 1853 and 1929, some two hundred thousand children rode the trains." The Source: A Guidebook to American Genealogy." We will pray before the Blessed Sacrament for true respect for all human life from conception to natural death. Please come to pray that our nation will be converted to a culture of life. LIFE CHAIN 2015 Life Chain Sunday is coming on October 4. Life Chains will again form on sidewalks across the U.S.A. and Canada in over 1900 cities and towns. Standing publicly, Christians will create a silent, loving protest against abortion. More than 90% of women who have had an abortion say they wish they hadn't, and they wouldn't have if they had received the right information. Please join your fellow parishioners to represent St. George Parish as we attend this life-saving event on 159th Street west of Harlem Avenue from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. To allow time for distribution of signs, please plan to arrive by 2:00 pm. This year we will be located on the north side of 159th Street in front of Harbor Freight (7520 W 159th). A ministry of prayer, communication and education! Enjoy one more taste of garden-fresh tomatoes, the last scents of newly-mowed grass and roses in the garden, a final bit of warm summer sunshine, and know that you are loved. Listen for marching bands and football players practicing, see the kids getting on their school buses, kids walking with their backpacks, kids playing after school, and consider how God cares for each of us. Appreciate the joys which surround us now, and anticipate Fall and the fun we have to look forward to! God is so good, and we are Beloved Children of our good and gracious God. AMEN! Please share the blessings that you have, and the love that you receive, with precious people in your life. A great way to share God's love is by giving the gift of a blessed prayer shawl. Shawls are free - please call Pina Quatrini at 708-606-0898, or Maureen Cetera at 708-253-5592. Thanks to the many wonderful donors who make it possible for us to share "hugs from God!"
