Annual Report 2014 - Canadian Parents for French

YK1 Chapter
ANNUAL REPORT
2013- 2014
BOARD EXECUTIVE
The Canadian Parents for French-YK1 Chapter consisted of the following volunteer
board members:
Chair
Secretary
Treasurer
Liaision with CPF-NWT Board
Member
Member
Madelon Haener
Vacant
Paul Davie
Tina Drew
Ngan Trinh
Liisa Prosyk
The Board of the CPF-YK1 Chapter was fortunate to have three new Board members
this year, bringing new ideas and energy to the Board and thus were able to initiate
some new activities like pumpkin carving and Lego Love, that will be strengthened in
future years.
There were however challenges:
 the majority of the Board members have young families, other community
commitments and in some cases work travel or spousal travel that can complicate
or limit involvement on the Board;
 there was one vacancy on the Board, for the Secretary position, resulting in
another Board member taking over those responsibilities;
 there is a need redistribute work load amongst Board members to ensure no one
person has taken on too much.
A new funding method through partnerships was started in September. As a result,
members who signed up in May to be on the Board with an understanding of how things
had worked in the past, had to adjust to a different structure of funding. It was a
challenge to start to build a network of contacts with Francophone and bilingual
community members for our activities. Nevertheless, the Board has worked in
partnership with the NWT Branch to successfully plan, coordinate and implement
activities for the YK1 school community.
PROMOTION
The Chapter continues to promote activities and membership through submissions to
school newsletters and the Yellowknife Education District No.1’s and Branch’s website
and Facebook pages. A Board member has also initiated a Facebook page for the
Chapter in early 2014. Information was also displayed on our District’s electronic
marquee and website. For a complete list of promotion, please see Attachment 1.
Page 1
Promotion of activities was an area that will need special attention. Families are busy
and often committed to regular sport and community events, thus CPF-YK1 Chapter
must work hard to attract attention and registration to their events. The Chapter’s new
Facebook page should help tremendously with promotion as more people join the page.
The Chapter experienced continual challenges getting information placed on the
Branch website.
A Board member attended the following school/District events:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
8)
École William McDonald’s Open House on September 13, 2013;
École Sir John Franklin’s Open House on September 20, 2013;
École J. H. Sissons’ Open House on September 23, 2013;
NJ MacPherson Open House on September 25, 2013;
Range Lake North Open House on September 26, 2013;
École J. H. Sissons’ Kindergarten/Preschool Information Night on February 13,
2013;
Some of the District’s French Steering Committee’s meetings scheduled
throughout the school year; and
Range Lake North’s fundraiser Café Paris.
The Chapter is grateful to our school district, The Yellowknife Education District No.1 for
their continued support. The District has generously assisted in the promotion of our
events on their website, electronic marquee and e-mail distribution.
MEMBERSHIP
The District also generously purchased memberships for families at the entry levels for
French programming: Grade 6 Intensive French and the French immersion prekindergarten classes.
All promotions included a reference to the Branch website for membership information.
At the schools’ open houses and Chapter activities brochures and membership
information was displayed.

ACTIVITIES
The CPF-YK1 Chapter worked to promote French language and culture through a
variety of programs. Some activities were a) in partnership with the NWT Branch while
other activities were b) Chapter funded activities. At total of 1172 people participated.
A) PARTNERSHIP ACTIVITIES:
In partnership with the Branch, the CPF-YK1 Chapter has planned, implemented and
reported on activities targeting our various schools and French programs. The activities
ranged from literacy events, special occasion activities (like pumpkin carving), to
physical activities. All events support French outside the classroom and therefore were
extra-curricular programs.
Pumpkin Carving – 44 people
18 families came to École J.H. Sissons and transformed pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns
on October 23, 2013. Families enjoyed the activity and provided feedback asking for
more holiday themed activities.
Illustrator Visit – 85 people
While in Yellowknife, providing workshops to students, two evening workshops were
held with illustrator, Gabrielle Grimard. One was held at École J. H. Sissons for French
Immersion students and their families. About 50 people attended this session on
November 6 (photo below). The second session was open to the public and was held
at the Yellowknife Public Library, on November 7 and was attended by students from
five different schools in Yellowknife. 35 people attended this public session. This was
the first visit by an illustrator to the District school community and was very well
received by the students and the families.
Page 3
Messy Art - 31 people
Multiple sessions (between January 12 to 28, 2014) were held at various schools (NJM,
WMS and RLN) to prepare “cars”, made from boxes with number labels to be worn by
children for Musical Cars game at future Literacy Night events to be held at the schools
in our District with elementary students.
Literacy Night – Obstacle Course – 40 people
With the help of three former École JH Sissons students, now in grade 9, an obstacle
course was set up as one of the stations in the school’s first Literacy Night. Books were
provided to students with the use of NWT Literacy grant money and light snacks and
juice provided with our Chapter’s membership money. Many children made multiple
visits to the obstacle course.
Babysitting Service for Parent Information Session – 12 people
Grade 9 French Immersion students returned to their former school to help supervise
elementary French Immersion students at École JH Sissons, while the parent(s)
attended an Overview of the Reading Program K-3 offered by the District’s Literacy
Coach on February 6.
Rock Climbing for Kids – 30 kids
Kids ranging from 4 to 17 years old, from four different schools in our school District,
attended our three rock climbing sessions on February 8 and 9. All thirty spots
available were full and kids were exposed to new French vocabulary related to the
climbing experience (i.e. colours, left/right, hand/foot, up/down) from four experience
climbers. These sessions were very well received.
Lego Love - 12 people
A family night out for imaginative play with loose Lego and creating Lego kits, on
February 19.
Gardening – 20 people
A March 12 session with local gardener, France Benoit which focused on planting
tomato seeds. Hands-on messy fun for parents with green thumbs and their children.
This session was a natural fit for Sissons school who has a parent initiated and
organized fundraising effort to have school families grow and then sell plants to the
larger community.
Page 4
Circus – 62 people
Two weekend sessions (March 9 and 23) for trying out circus/acrobatic equipment for
juggling, walking on a ball, stilts, stacking chairs, unicycles and more. There was also
an aerial rig with a hop and trapeze bar for the second session, which always had a line
up of children waiting their turn, and was declared the best part of the circus session on
many of the completed evaluations.
Yoga at RLN – 50 students
A March 7 French yoga session for classes in Intensive French and Post-Intensive
French.
First Aid Sessions - 231 students
a) PeopleSavers – all 206 elementary students, except pre-kinderdarten, were given
an introduction to first aid by a Red Cross certified instructor and provided Red
Cross first aid books.
b) First Aid course - all twenty five (25) students in grade 5 were given an
introduction to first aid by a Red Cross certified instructor and provided Red
Cross first aid books.
Page 5
B) CHAPTER FUNDED ACTIVITIES
The Chapter applied for and received funding from NWT Literacy Council to implement
literacy related activities and also received funding from Get Active, a fund sponsored
by the Government of the Northwest Territories to promote physical activity.
Extended Storytime Sessions – 47 people
The Chapter hired a French teacher to put on 3 extended storytime sessions for pre-K
to grade 2 French immersion students and their families. Each session had a theme
related to a French book, craft, cooking, and coloring activities. The dates of the
sessions were November 30, January 19, and February 23. All children were given a
French book.
Get Active Sessions – 34 people
1) Super Soccer at Sissons – an evening family soccer session on November 13, 2013.
2) Rock Climbing – a one hour session introducing kids to rock climbing at the indoor
Yellowknife Climbing Club with French instruction on November 21, 2013.
3) Skating and Nordic Walking – people attended a combined outdoor event for skating
and Nordic walking on February 16, 2014.
Literacy Nights – 175 people
January 30 – A Literacy Night at Range Lake North, focusing on numeracy with
various station activities, including musical cars, reading a story, how to prepare a
storysack, reading tips for parents, a giant canvas snakes and ladder game, and more.
Although 42 people were registered for the event, actual attendance was approximately
75 people.
Page 6
January 30 – Sissons’ PJ Literacy Night where various stations were set up for
families to hear a story read by a special guest, create bookmarks, explore various
French websites in the computer lab, and listen to French audio recordings. All children
were given a Passport, created by our Chapter, for collecting stamps from each station.
Our Chapter was also responsible for monitoring an obstacle course in the gym.
Approximately 40 people attended. Juice, a light snack and children books were
provided by our Chapter. As a first time event at this school, it was very well received
and staff would like to hold the event again next year.
February 20 – A literacy night at Mildred Hall, focusing on numeracy with various
station activities, including musical cars, reading a story, how to prepare a storysack,
reading tips for parents, and ???. Approximately 60 people attended. This was a very
successful turnout for this particular school.
It was felt that this success was in
because the school administration provided supper/hot dogs for those attending.
Future proposals to the NWT Literacy Council from the Chapter will include this new
expense.
BOARD EVENTS
The Chapter would like to recognize the work of Tina Drew that applied for grant money
from the City of Yellowknife and organized kayaking lessons for the YK1 and YCS
schools. These sessions were not possible without volunteer instructors. There were
three instructors who are also teachers in our YK1 District’s schools: Stéphane Sévigny
(Sissons), Denis Légère (WMS) and Kim Poitras (SJF). It is important to recognize
their efforts to provide the kids with the opportunity to try this sport!
Page 7
EVALUATIONS
New this year, were evaluation forms for all our Chapter activities. In order to avoid a
low return rate of forms going home to be completed, forms (and pens) were handed
out near the end of each activity. Participants were more than happy to take a few
minutes to complete the simple form. With the most recent addition of the question
“Where did you hear about this activity?” we hope to determine our most effective
promotion options.
The feedback obtained from evaluation forms were overwhelmingly positive and
appreciative of offering of activities outside of school hours, especially family activities.
Here are some samples:
 Pumpkin carving - all material was well thought out and provided. Good
socialization opportunity as well. The handout of French seasonal words was
great!
 Illustrator, Gabrielle Grimard – Great Speaker! Very enthusiastic, I really liked
that she gave tips to all the kids. I really enjoyed how I got to use my imagination
and create my own character.
 Rock Climbing – I learned about (the names of) body parts in French like hands
and feet. I liked the language use (dans les pieds, maximum, use of colors), the
sport itself and things families can do together.
 Storytime – hands on activity, playing with other kids and the variety of activities.
This is our third session and we really enjoy the thematic activities surrounding
the stories. I wish I could speak more French so that this was event more of an
immersion experience for my son.
 Lego Love – my daughter now wants “girl” Lego for her birthday!
 Circus – We loved it! I enjoyed seeing my son use his French skills. It was lots of
fun and well presented. We learned new vocabulary for body parts and lots of
verbs.
 Gardening – Useful information, very interactive/hands on. We learned French
words in context of gardening and tend to learn the language through
experiences.
The forms also provided the Chapter with concrete examples of what activities the
children and families would like offered in the future. Ideas included pottery classes,
holiday events like Christmas cookie decorating, more cooking for kids, team games,
French movie night, drawing or art classes, a French play, more authors, board games
in French, and more rock climbing and kayaking. Let the planning begin for next year!

MEDIA
In the November 15th edition of L’Aquilon, an ad was placed by Sissons school
acknowledging CPF sponsorship. The text was as follows:
Merci au CPF-NWT
d'avoir soutenu les activités de l'école Sissons depuis plusieurs
années. Grâce au CPF-NWT,
en juin 2013, les élèves de la 5
année ont participé à une activité de trois jours de canot-camping avec certification de
Pagaie Canada et une formation de secourisme adapté en plein air / RCR de la Croix
Merci Sissons.
e
On November 20, 2013, the Yellowknifer had an article about illustrator Gabrielle
Grimard’s visit to Yellowknife. In the article, Caroline Roux, Literacy Coach for the YK1
District mentions that Canadian Parents for French has sponsored author visits to the
school in the past.
This is the first year that the Chapter has initiated social media with the use of our own
Facebook page. In early February, we went live. Thank you Ngan Trinh for this
wonderful tool to showcase our event calendar and photos from events. The Chapter
continues to also use the Branch website and the school district’s website, and school
newsletters and bulletin boards for promotion.
