HORIZONS FOUNDATION 30 ANNUAL REPORT 2009 YEARS A GENERATION OF PROGRESS www.horizonsfoundation.org 30 YEARS AN LGBT FOUNDATION COMES OF AGE Thirty years means progress. There’s no doubt that the LGBT community has made enormous strides in the last 30 years. Newspapers that once printed photos of police raids, the nightclub patrons hiding their faces in shame, now share photos from same-sex weddings, the couples’ faces lit up with joy. To sustain the work for LGBT people to reach full equality, it’s critical for us to remember the history that brought us this far. Thirty years marks a generation. Horizons Foundation has been around long enough for a whole new LGBT generation to come up and come out. Launched in 1980, Horizons has grown up with the LGBT movement, and has made grants totaling more than $20 million. Those grants have touched thousands of lives, and helped shape and fuel the movement itself. But no matter which generation you came up and came out with, Horizons is your LGBT foundation. We invest in the entire Bay Area LGBT community, making the world better for LGBT people of every age, including those who aren’t out yet—and those who won’t even be born for another 30 years. Thirty years took long-term planning. Horizons Foundation began as a way to ensure that our community could meet immediate needs but also grow and develop over the long haul. This meant more than just financial contributions to LGBT nonprofits. From the foundation’s earliest days, we’ve helped those organizations build the infrastructure they’d need for the long-term. We’ve encouraged LGBT donors in their giving, which is the lifeblood of the services and advocacy our community depends on. We’ve sat at the table with mainstream foundations to help them understand LGBT needs, resulting in millions of dollars coming to our community. Thanks to the commitment of thousands of people over the years—donors, funders, board members, staff, and volunteers—Horizons is here to meet the needs, secure the rights, and celebrate the lives of the next generation of the LGBT community. Thirty years is only possible when we work together. Horizons Foundation knows that our movement can build on what’s come before. That’s why we established the LGBT Community Endowment Fund as a permanent source of funds for our community. Yes, each new generation will grow, adapt, change direction, shift strategies, and find creative ways to meet new challenges. But the one thing we don’t need to do is go it alone. We can join with others in our community—the activists, the donors, the leaders, the institutions, the allies— and find solutions together. Thirty years is just the beginning. In 1980, no one had ever heard of an LGBT community foundation. Thirty years from now, the history each of us is creating today will carry our movement beyond what we can even imagine. JEFF LEWY 2009 Board Co-chair BEV SCOTT 2009 Board Co-chair ROGER DOUGHTY Executive Director Horizons Foundation is deeply grateful for the leadership and commitment of Chuck Forester and Kristen Putnam-Walkerly, who completed their board service this past year. Special thanks as well to Antonio Choy-Koo, Dan Neumann, Lia Shigemura, and Wendy Storch who completed their committee service. Thank you all! Horizons also honors the memory of Glenn Perry, who passed away in 2009. Glenn served as a member of our board from 2003 to 2007, and he gave generously of his time and resources to many LGBT organizations and Bay Area institutions. He will be missed both within and beyond the LGBT community. Horizons’ net assets at year-end were $8,224,532, an increase of 10% over 2008—and perhaps more significantly, an increase of 7% over 2007. Revenues for 2009 were $3,623,319, an increase of 12% over 2008 thanks in part to the performance of our investments and in part to Horizons securing new investments in our community from mainstream funders. Expenditures for 2009 totaled $2,853,627, of which 78% was dedicated to grantmaking, capacity building, and philanthropic promotion programs, and 22% to fundraising, management, and general expenses. The information presented here reflects the foundation’s statement of financial position and activity for the year ended December 31, 2009. To that end, Horizons awarded five Rickey Williams Fellowships in 2009 to support emerging LGBT leaders of color, as part of our POCIBLE grant program. Horizons also began convening executive directors of LGBT organizations across the Bay Area to discuss strategies for navigating a difficult economy and to strengthen ties among organizations. MISSION A community foundation rooted in and dedicated to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, Horizons Foundation exists to: • Mobilize and increase resources for the LGBT movement and organizations that secure the rights, meet the needs, and celebrate the lives of LGBT people • Empower individual donors and promote giving as an integral part of a healthy, compassionate community • Steward a permanently endowed fund through which donors can make legacy gifts to ensure our community’s capacity to meet the future needs of LGBT people BUILDING LGBT PHILANTHROPY Philanthropic Education In 2009, Horizons held our second annual Givers & Shakers Conference for larger givers to the LGBT community. The day-long event featured sessions on lessons from Prop 8 and the impact of the economic downturn, and outstanding expert guests such as keynote speaker Eva Paterson, founder of the Equal Justice Society. Other educational events during the year included a presentation at the Marin County Estate Planning Council and two convenings co-presented with the San Francisco Foundation on strategies for achieving LGBT equality. Donor Services From the publication of our annual Directory of Professional Advisors for the LGBT Community to philanthropic advising for the nearly 90 donor-advised and other named funds housed at Horizons, we serve as a vital resource for donors as well as professional advisors who integrate the needs of LGBT clients into their professional services. Horizons also helps LGBT people plan meaningful legacies by offering advice on bequests and other planned gifts. Philanthropic Advocacy Horizons plays a unique role as a leading advocate for the LGBT community within the larger world of philanthropy. As a voice for LGBT interests, Horizons helps bring new resources to our community. For example, in 2009, Horizons received a three-year, $500,000 grant from the Community Leadership Project (CLP)—a collaboration of the Packard, Irvine, and Hewlett Foundations—to build the capacity of people of color LGBT organizations. We are one of just a handful of CLP grantees, and the only one focused on the LGBT community.
