KEY STAGE 2
SEE TIMETABLE FOR AM AND PM CLASS INVOLVEMENT
Dear Parent / Carer
On Monday and Friday of the week commencing 4th July our normal sports afternoons will be replaced with a couple
of days to commemorate the Olympic Games, no, not the Rio 2016 but the original games set against the base of
Mount Olympus! Below I have outlined the basic ideas behind the day and the way you can perhaps help in its
running and organisation. Please note that your child will be involved in either a morning or afternoon session and
these are outlined on the timetable at the end of this letter.
THE DAY
The day will involve your child, with their class or group, visiting a variety of places set up on the school field and in
the small hall. Each session will take 25 minutes. Four classes will enjoy their Olympic day in the morning with the
other four classes participating in the afternoon. Details of the timetable will appear at the end of this letter as there
will be parental viewing stations at each event for you to witness the events. The actual games will take the form of
fun events, five in total, although we do hope to find some class Olympic champions at each event. After all, what is
an Olympic games without its champions? Please note that for the Foundation groups the Wrestling and the
Chariot Racing will be replaced with different events, although still on the Olympic theme.
THE EVENTS
1. THE WRESTLING ARENA
Boys and girls, using hoops and mats in a safe outdoor arena. The aim is to push their opponent out of the rings.
2. THE TRACK EVENTS INCLUDING THE MARATHON
Boys and girls compete on the track in class 50/70 m sprints. Individual and relay events will take place. To conclude
the session the whole class will take part in a mini marathon around the rest of the events.
3. THE THROWING EVENTS
Based at the throwing arena. Three styles of throwing for each child to participate in. Possible items include the
discus, javelin and ‘ye olde’ Greek bean bag.
4. THE CHARIOT RACES
A circular track paves the way for some spectacular partner races using trolleys or go karts. Each partner has a turn
at steering and pushing around the ‘circus’ track.
5. THE GREEK DANCING
A special Greek dance has been prepared for the day. The children will be taught the steps, before practicing and
performing the dance routine.
THE SCROLLS OF HONOUR AND MEDALS
The events will all start off by meeting outside The Temple of Zeus on the large playground. This will be the opening
ceremony. The children will then depart to their first event. At the end of the five events the children will return to the
temple for a presentation of medals and their Scroll of Olympic Honour. A short closing down ceremony will end the
Games.
COSTUME
I am hoping that parents might want to become involved in the day. One way you can help is to design, make or
produce a Greek costume for your child to use on the day, adding an authentic Greek look to our games. Obviously
simple costumes can be made out of old sheets, pillowcases for simple togas. I am sure our parents can possibly
get their thinking caps on and come up with some creative designs. One point to consider is that the outfit has to
also survive the various activities your child will participate in, so add a touch of modern day ‘health and safety’ to
your design!
For the day your child will also be given an old myths and legend style Greek name. This will be their official name
for the day.
PARENTS
The actual day will open to parents, just like our normal traditional sports day. Enabling you to follow a class round
and view the action from marked spectator points. An opening and closing ceremony will mark the start and the end
of the morning and afternoon sessions. Refreshments and a programme will be on sale to keep you up to date as
we hope for some Greek style weather to grace our Olympic tribute!
Each child who participates in the games will receive a commemorative medal. To help cover the cost of the
400 medals we are asking each child to pay a voluntary contribution of £1.00.
That concludes a brief preview of our Olympic day. If any parents have any other ideas or could contribute or help on
the day, please contact myself or Mrs Liversidge. For example, if we have any artists out there you might be able to
paint the school a wonderful temple scene to house the king of the gods!
POSSIBLE HELP ZONE
THE CHARIOTS (Without your help, this event could not take place.)
For the games I need to acquire around 10 go karts, trolleys, anything that can be pushed around the arena. If you
have anything suitable (and safe) that school could borrow, (it can be humorous, too) can you please indicate on the
form below and bring it into school in the week before the Olympics start.
I ………………………………………………………… could provide a form of transport for the chariot races.

Over the page is a rough timetable for the days. Please note the slight change in Year Six classes as they will help
run the activities over the two days when not involved on their own session. On Friday this will involve Mr Ellis’ class
taking part in the morning sessions.
