Baked Milk Allergy
Information
Cow’s Milk Allergy:
If your child has an allergy to milk, your child may be able to eat baked foods with
milk listed as the 3rd or lower ingredient on the food label. You will need to read
ingredient labels carefully to make sure they are safe to eat. All baked foods must be
baked all the way through and cannot be wet or soggy in the middle.
.
Examples of baked foods your child may eat:
— animal crackers. — cereal bars and banana cookies, such as Gerber®.
— homemade baked products that have no more than 1/6 cup of cow’s milk
per baked milk serving. For example, if the recipe has 1 cup cow’s milk in it
and is at least 6 servings, it is safe to eat. — homemade cake or cookies baked at 350° for at least 10 minutes.
— many types of breads.
— treats, such as Newton® cookies and Keebler Rice Krispie Treats®.
Examples of foods your child should not eat:
— baked foods with cow’s milk listed as first or second ingredient.
— cheese, including cheese pizza, even though it has been cooked.
— cooked milk products that are not baked, such as pudding.
— foods that may have a cow’s milk ingredient that has not been baked. For
example, the frosting on a cookie or cupcake goes on after it is baked, so it is
not safe for your child to eat.
— French toast and pancakes.
— frostings with a cow’s milk ingredient.
— homemade waffles.
— milk chocolate chips. They melt during baking but do not actually “bake.”
Your child will need to continue to use cow’s milk-free chocolate chips.

What about calcium?
Children need calcium for bone growth and strength. It may be difficult for children
with a baked milk allergy to get enough calcium in their diets, especially if they have
to avoid baked milk. Make sure your child eats calcium-rich foods, such as:
— calcium-fortified non-dairy beverages such as soy, coconut, or almond milk.
— calcium-fortified orange juice.
— cooked green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, turnip greens, and collard greens.
— canned fish such as salmon or sardines.
— tofu, soybeans, pinto beans, and navy beans.
— almonds.
— molasses.
