Home Loan Guaranties: These are issued to help eligible servicemembers, veterans, reservists, and unmarried surviving spouses obtain homes, condos, manufactured homes, and also to refinance loans. Visit www.homeloans.va.gov/. WHAT IF I HAVE A SERVICECONNECTED DISABILITY? A service-connected disability is a disability that is incurred or aggravated during service. Some disabilities and diseases are presumed to be related to service, such as those caused by exposure to radiation and agent orange. Persons who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who were discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Reservists and National Guard members who were called to active duty may also qualify. If eligible, compensation for disabilities is paid to you monthly, free of federal or state tax. Pensions: Veterans with low incomes who are permanently or totally disabled, or age 65 and older, may be eligible for monetary support if they performed 90 days of active service during wartime. Education & Training: The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides for a percentage of tuition, fees, books, and supply costs, as well as a housing allowance, for eligible veterans. Burial & Memorial Benefits: Veterans and servicemembers who died during active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training, as well as spouses and dependent children, are eligible. Burial includes gravesite, grave-liner, opening and closing of the grave, and a headstone/marker. VA will pay a burial allowance up to $2,000 if the death is service-connected. Transition Assistance: The National Resource Directory is a good tool for ill and injured service members, vets, and their families. Death gratuity payments in the amount of $100,000 are available to the next of kin of service members who die while on active duty or within 120 days of separation as a result of service-connected injury or illness.
