WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE
DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS
AFFAIRS?
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
provides eligible Veterans of the U.S. armed
forces with a broad range of programs and
services.
VA operates the nation’s largest health care
system with over 1,400 sites of care, including
hospitals, clinics, community living centers,
readjustment counseling centers, and various
other facilities.

Home Loan Guaranties: These are issued to
help eligible servicemembers, veterans,
reservists, and unmarried surviving spouses
obtain homes, condos, manufactured homes,
and also to refinance loans. Visit

WHAT IF I HAVE A SERVICECONNECTED DISABILITY?
A service-connected disability is a disability
that is incurred or aggravated during service.
Some disabilities and diseases are presumed
to be related to service, such as those caused
by exposure to radiation and agent orange.
Persons who served in the active military,
naval, or air service and who were discharged
or released under conditions other than
dishonorable. Reservists and National Guard
members who were called to active duty may
also qualify.
If eligible, compensation for disabilities is paid
to you monthly, free of federal or state tax.
The amount varies with the degree of the
disability and number of dependents you

Programs include: vocational rehabilitation &
employment, housing grants, automobile
allowances, clothing allowances, and aid/
attendance for housebound veterans.

Pensions: Veterans with low incomes who are
permanently or totally disabled, or age 65 and
older, may be eligible for monetary support if
they performed 90 days of active service

Education & Training: The Post 9/11 GI Bill
provides for a percentage of tuition, fees,
books, and supply costs, as well as a housing
allowance, for eligible veterans. The
Montgomery GI Bill assists those who have
high school diplomas/equivalency certificates,

Burial & Memorial Benefits: Veterans and
servicemembers who died during active duty,
active duty for training, or inactive duty
training, as well as spouses and dependent
children, are eligible. Burial includes
gravesite, grave-liner, opening and closing of
the grave, and a headstone/marker. VA will
pay a burial allowance up to $2,000 if the
death is service-connected.
Homeless Veteran Assistance: Several
programs provide supportive services for
homeless veterans and their families. Visit

Transition Assistance: The National
Resource Directory is a good tool for ill and
injured service members, vets, and their
families. It provides access to services for
recovery, rehabilitation, and community
integration. Visit

Dependents & Survivors: Certain dependents
and survivors can receive reimbursement for
most medical expenses under the Civilian
Health & Medical Program of the Department
of Veterans Affairs. Visit www.va.gov/hac/forbeneficiaries/champva/champva.asp.
Death gratuity payments in the amount of
$100,000 are available to the next of kin of
service members who die while on active duty
or within 120 days of separation as a result of
service-connected injury or illness. If eligible,
VA also provides pensions to low-income
surviving spouses and children of deceased
veterans with wartime service. Educational
assistance for spouses and children is also
available.
Children of Vietnam or Korean veterans born
with certain birth defects may be eligible for a
monthly monetary allowance.
