LONDON’S WAR DEAD
OUR
BOOKS
OF
REMEMBRANCE
WORLD WAR TWO
THE BOOKS OF
REMEMBRANCE
General History of the Books :
The Remembrance Books of London Ontario Canada
include the names and in some cases the pictures of those
in the London area who were killed as a result of service
during the Second World War 1939 - 1945.
There are two books .
The first book was initiated, compilation started, in the
spring of 1949 by a group of mothers who lost sons in the
Second World War , calling themselves „Memorial Cross
Mothers, London, Ontario‟.
When the group first met on April 27, 1945 ,their fourth
aim as a group was “ To prepare a Book of Remembrance ,
with a picture of each boy.”
“ The names of all London men who gave their lives, were
to be therein recorded.” [London = London Area]
The book was unveiled in 1950.
The second book was compiled in 1999 by Vimy Branch
145 , Royal Canadian Legion , as a community service .
Their goal was to include :
“Londoners who were omitted, and
Portrait memorials of Londoners entered by name only, in
the first book.
Londoners Who Paid The Supreme Sacrifice In The
Korean War.”
Each book is uniquely displayed in a hand-carved wood
lectern with a glass top cover.
Every day Book 1 and Book 2 are opened to a different
page by The City Commissionaires, revealing a List Of
Names or An Individual Who Gave Up Their Life for us.
BOOK 1
This book which measures 10 inches (25cm) across
its width, 11 inches (28cm) in height and 4 inches
(10cm) in thickness, is covered in a padded
red/burgundy leather. It is embossed on the edges .
The spine of the book is embossed with a large
maple leaf. On the cover, embossed in gold letters,
are the words “BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE”
and “1939 - 1945”. These words being separated by
a deeply embossed square, which contains a Silver
Cross fastened to the book. The book has a white
silk cloth inside front and back covering. The book
has heavy parchment paper pages. The pages are
sewn together. The book is numbered to page 202.
The book is numbered only for pages with text. It is
divided into sections for the Navy, Army and Air
Force. Lists of those known by name only precede
each biographic section. The pages are all hand
lettered in black ink with gold and hand coloured
illumination. All the photographs are original prints
in black and white, glued to each biographic page.
All the picture pages for individuals are located on
the right hand pages only. Where no text is found on
the left hand pages, no page number is found or
applies.

individuals are each written differently, the families
being the primary authors, making the book as a
whole more readable and heartfelt. This first book
includes 512 individuals. The main creator of the
book was Colonel Francis B. Ware , DSO, VD [ A

Seventh Fusiliers of London , Canada 1899 to 1914
