July is Recreation and Parks Month! Go online and look for ways that your family can have fun
outdoors.

Encourage your child to look for patterns in roads, homes, books and songs. What makes a
pattern?

Create a math game with a deck of cards: Each player puts out a card; the first to add or multiply
the numbers on those cards is the winner.

Happy Independence Day! Encourage your children to investigate the science behind fireworks and
explain their findings to family and friends before seeing fireworks tonight!

Review your family’s eating and exercise habits. Read nutrition labels. Work with your children to
create a regular workout routine.

Have younger children identify and count shapes around the house. The refrigerator is a rectangle.
Where are the circles, squares and triangles?

Spend some time talking about money. Regardless of whether your family has an allowance policy,
discuss the value of savings and plans.

Today is Math 2.0 Day, a day celebrating technology’s impact on mathematic advancement.
Discuss with your children both the benefits of and the challenges created by technology.

Let your children make ice cream sandwiches with their favorite flavors and two cookies. Who
invented the ice cream sandwich?

Summer safety includes helmets and sunscreen! Do your children know some other ways to
protect their skin and bones?

Play with words: Have your children pick five or ten random words from a newspaper or magazine
article. Use those words to create a story or poem; then, compare stories.

Have younger children sort the laundry into categories by color.

Play the alphabet travel game with your children. Each player finds a letter in order: A in Annapolis,
B in bus stop, C in caution, etc.

Happy Bastille Day, known in France as the Fête nationale! Discover the fascinating history of this
holiday with your family by browsing your local library for books on France.

Most landfills are filled with about 40 percent paper, more than any other material. Encourage
your family and friends to recycle. Explain why recycling is important.

July 16 is National Personal Chef Day! Head to the kitchen and start baking up a culinary
masterpiece for you and your family to share! Ask your children to help!

Take a close look at the clouds with your child. Why do different clouds form under unlike weather
conditions?

during his spacewalk. How would your child use a jet pack?

July 26 is Aunts and Uncles Day! Ask your child why his or her aunts and uncles are important.
Encourage your child to give them a call and let them know!

Today is Parents’ Day! Encourage your child to lend a hand around the house today; he or she can
clean the bathroom, make lunch, walk the dog, etc. – the possibilities are endless!

Quiz your child: Do lightning bugs really have lights? How do they glow? Can you see them during
the day?

Practice “Leave No Trace” during outdoor activities: plan ahead, dispose of litter, respect wildlife
and leave areas better than you found them. Encourage your children to do the same!

Visit the Maryland Science Center, the National Aquarium and/or the Maryland Zoo. Have your
family write down observations and compare notes after the trip!

What if Maryland had snow in the summer? Write a story with your child about how you two
would spend your summer vacation.
