Anything is Possible!
This weekend we celebrate “Mother’s Day” Mothers have always known that their newborn infants
show a preference for their gentle voices. When fetuses hear their mom’s voice their heart rates quicken.
Mother’s love brings great joy and total acceptance to most of us. In the book of Isaiah, God’s love is compared
with mother’s love, “Does a mother forget her baby, or a woman the child within her womb? Yet even if these
forget, I will never forget my people.” (Isaiah 49, 15-16)
The poetic words of William Shakespeare never lose their charm. In his famous play, Romeo, and Juliet,
we hear Juliet ask Romeo to base his promises of love on more than the mere orbits of the moon. Juliet says:
“O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon that monthly changes in her circle orb, lest that thy love prove
likewise variable.”
In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus’ promise: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God and
faith in me.” At the end of the reading is his great promise: “Anything you ask in my name I will do.” This is
a promise that was made by our heavenly Father. Nothing could be more reliable. Nothing could be more
eternal.
When we look at our world we can well feel that the problems of evil and injustice are insurmountable.
That’s a reasonable conclusion for anyone who does not have faith. But Christian faith is founded on trust that
God works in history to bring about the unimaginable. Those, who choose to accept Christ’s invitation to place
their faith in him, can believe that the true way to life is found by following him through the confrontation with
evil into a victory that only God can bring about. All who do so will accomplish even greater works than Jesus
did himself. “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these…”
(Jn. 14:12)
Christ gave his life for us and has entrusted us with his mission. In turn he asks for our trust so that as
we take on his mission and bring it to fruition in new and greater ways.
Yours in Risen Christ,
Fr. Lawrence
An invitation for being a Parish Pastoral council (PPC) member!
Dear Parishioners,
On this “Good Shepherd Sunday,” as your pastor, I extend the invitation to anyone, who feels that the
members of our community would hear his/her gentile voice, to consider and share with me being a member of
the “Parish Pastoral Council.”
Parish pastoral council members are in good company. There are more than 19,627 parishes in the U.S.
by a conservative estimate, three-quarters of them have pastoral councils. That means that there are 14,720
councils in U.S. if each council has 5 to 10 members, then almost 75,000 to 150,000 citizens belong to pastoral
councils. If you belong to a pastoral council, you participate in one of the most widespread and popular
innovations of Vatican II.
The Purpose of “Parish Pastoral Council:” one of the documents from Vatican II has defined the role of
the pastoral council as follows: “to investigate and consider matters to pastoral activity and to formulate
practical conclusions concerning them.” This three-fold description - investigate, consider, and conclude – is
the way the Church describes the role of parish pastoral council (PPC). The PPC would be a great help for
Pastors in any church. We are planning to form the PPC by the middle of June. Please keep this intention of
our community in your prayers. Thank you!
Yours in Risen Christ,
Fr. Lawrence
