9 | Thank You
It is important for us all, to constantly look to improve
the way that we deliver care locally. However, it is
equally as important to take time to celebrate the things
we do well.
Therefore, it was a privilege to take part in our
‘Celebrating Excellence Awards’ annual staff event last
Friday where the Trust showcased some of the excellent
work of our staff who strive to make improvements
across all services.
It was an emotional evening with a great sense of
pride for us all to see the hard work and commitment
demonstrated by staff. A total of thirty-two teams and
individuals were nominated for awards who all attended
on the evening.
I was pleased to see so many staff at the event whom
I had already met on my weekly visits to frontline
services and I know that there are many more of you
who deserve recognition for the great work that you
do. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to say
thank you!
Many of our social care staff will be aware that Tuesday
was ‘World Social Work Day’ which was an opportune
moment for us to reflect on some of the excellent
transformational work which has been ongoing for the
last 12 months or so.
The review of care packages is starting to see some
tangible results in terms of establishing care tailored
to needs and more service users maintaining their
independence at home and I would like to thank staff for
their support in helping improve social care services.
We are rightfully proud of the contribution social care
staff make in helping people to live more independently
and enabling people to live their life the way that they
choose.
We now know that the Trust is likely to receive its draft
report from the Care Quality Commission next week,
following our inspection in November last year. We will
have 10 days to review the draft report and challenge
any issues of factual accuracy.
Again, I would like to thank all staff who were
interviewed and visited as part of the inspection and
thank in advance the team of expert readers we have
lined up to review the draft report when it arrives.
We are still a number of weeks away from receiving the
final report which will be published but would like to
reassure you that as soon as we have something to share
with all staff we will.
Finally, although I will be contacting all affected staff
individually, I would like to take the opportunity to thank
all staff who will be leaving the organisation at the end
of the month.
It is disappointing that services are leaving the Trust and
equally disappointing to lose such valued members of
staff, some of which I have worked with in Staffordshire
for 12 years. I wish you all well in your new employment.

Last Friday night members of staff from across the Trust came together for the Celebrating Excellence
Awards 2016. The awards recognise individuals and teams who regularly go the extra mile to ensure
that the Trust delivers the highest quality of care and that they live the Trust values – Quality, People,
Responsibility – in everything which they do.
The event welcomed VIP guests from partner originations, members of the public and staff who submitted a
nomination form and of course 2016’s nominees who work across a range of services.
Stuart Poynor, Chief Executive, said: “Tonight was a great opportunity to see how the actions of
hardworking teams and individuals have a positive impact on the lives of the people we care for and the
staff who work alongside them.”
Interim Chairman, David Pearson, added: “Sitting on the shortlisting panel was humbling and a fantastic
opportunity. Meeting our nominees this evening and watching short videos, which capture their exceptional
work was inspiring, and a great way to showcase the care and compassion of professionals working within
our Trust. Well done to everyone who was nominated and of course, our Celebrating Excellence Awards
winners, on their fantastic achievements.”

Promoting the dignity and worth of people through assisted
technology and new approaches
Last week’s edition of The Word introduced the eight
Dignity Factors, which contribute to a person's sense of
self-respect.
1.
Choice and control
2.Communication
3.
Eating and nutrition
4.
Pain management
5.
Personal hygiene
6.
Practical assistance
7.Privacy
8.
Social inclusion
In recognition of World Social Work Day, Jonathan
Willis, Social Care Assessor – Duty in Cannock locality
emphasises the importance of the Dignity Factor within
his Duty role, using a varied range of assistive technology
and preventative approaches.
“I was working with an individual who struggled with
her medication administration; she began taking her AM
medication at night and PM medication in the morning,

on People
which meant she was awake during the night and very
sleepy during the day. As the medication was originally
in blister packs this still caused her difficulty due to
memory loss. I suggested using assistive technology,
recommending a Pivotel Medication Reminder.
This resulted in the medication being administered
correctly; as the device carried out an audible sound
and visual alert when the service user was due to take
her medicine. Since using the Pivotel this lady, who
lives independently, is now consistently taking her
medications on time.”
Jonathan added: “I have become involved with another
service user who was managing all aspects of her care
but was struggling with meal preparation and becoming
socially isolated. To help I provided the service user and
family with details of ‘The Casserole Club’; a national
network where neighbours/communities share meals
with neighbours who need it most. Joining a scheme
like this may be useful in providing not only carer relief
and an alternative to Meals on Wheels but also helps
ensure service users receive contact during the day.
After getting involved, the lady’s daughter said her mum
not only looked forward to the hot meals but also the
friendship that had developed with the Casserole Club
volunteer which is a great result.”

NHS Sustainability Day - 24 March 2016
The facilities and estates team recognises the impact that health operations have
on the environment as well as the strong link between sustainability and the
health of the public. The NHS currently emits around 20 million tonnes of CO2
every year; 5 per cent of all UK emissions from road transport are attributable
to NHS related journeys. As part of this year’s Sustainability Day a new app has
been launched called the “50k Carbon Challenge” which aims to raise awareness
among health professionals and patients of the environment as health and
financial savings come from reducing carbon emissions.
The facilities and estates team is currently working on an Environmental Procurement and Sustainability Policy for
the Trust. As a team they are always looking for ways that we could become more sustainable and energy efficient.
If you have any suggestions on ways we could achieve this please email [email protected]. If you would
like any further information on sustainability please visit the Sustainability Development Unit website:

Buy Annual Leave
Did you know that you can purchase additional annual leave for 2016/17?
Instalments are spread across the whole year making it more affordable
than you might think!
Dawn Fitzjohn from the Health Improvement Team bought a week’s
annual leave last year and found it hugely beneficial. She said; “For me the
extra week helped me to plan my holidays better. More importantly it’s
given me the flexibility to be able to take a day off here and there to help
out with my grandchildren or any home emergency that may crop up.”
How much does it cost? There is no set amount. The amount you pay
depends on your tax rate. As an indication, an additional weeks’ leave
would cost the same as one weeks’ regular pay. As an easy calculation
divide your annual salary by 52.
For example a salary of £30,000 would be £30,000/52 = £576, or just £48
per month if paid across 12 months.
What’s the catch? There is no catch, and there is no maximum allowed.
The only condition is that your manager must be able to accommodate
your request without a requirement to backfill your role.
Purchase of annual leave request form can be found here.

National
Programme
Commend
Services
Services which support patients to be discharged from hospital quickly or avoid an admission in the first place have
been commended by experts from the national Emergency Care Improvement Programme (ECIP).
Colleagues from ECIP visited the Partnership Trust on Wednesday to hear more about ways the Trust is delivering
improvements to care for more patients before they reach crisis point and need an acute hospital bed.
The team was impressed at the bed-based step up model and Exemplar programme which has been established
at Haywood Hospital and seen an increase in throughput of patients during the last four weeks and a reduction in
length of stay for patients.
Hospital Manager, Lisa Hulme, said: “The team were extremely impressed with Grange Ward and how it was
operating as a receiving Community Assessment Unit and we were able to explain that effective integrated working
between community hospitals wards, intermediate care and the Living Independently Staffordshire service was
enabling seamless care to the patients.”
Other schemes such as the care home project which provides a resource pack to homes to support care of their
residents and avoid a trip to hospital; the Hub in North Staffordshire; and the way social care teams work in both
Royal Stoke Hospital and our community hospitals to identify patients suitable for discharge were also discussed and
recognised as best practice.

Leading Expert Pain Patient Visits IPOPS team
Integrated Physiotherapy Orthopaedic and Pain Management
Service (IPOPS) based in Lichfield has recently been visited by
Pete Moore, an expert patient in pain. Pete attended a pain
management programme in 1996 before becoming a Senior
Trainer for Pain on the Expert Patients programme. Pete lived
with severe pain and developed a toolkit of pain management
skills to become an active self-manager.
Pete has since written numerous patient and professional pain
self-management programmes and co-authored literature
supported by the Department of Health which promotes selfmanagement and enable people to live happier lives.
Paula Deacon, Clinical Lead for IPOPS said; “Having the
opportunity to see Pete was fantastic. He is an inspiration to fellow patients with his can do approach and attitude.
It is great to see that he is always looking for ways to improve and update the Pain Toolkit so that the message is
evidence based.”
Pete, added; “This was a great opportunity after hearing so much about IPOPS. It was great to see that they promote
self-management, use appropriate language and direct their patients to the Pain Toolkit as part of the patient
pathway and rehabilitation.”

A patient’s daughter has sent her thanks to Staff Nurse

her manager to be aware of the compliment”

things through. “
