Private Forests Tasmania is a Tasmanian statutory authority established under the Private Forests Act (1994). It
works to facilitate and expand the development of the private forest resource in Tasmania in a manner which
is consistent with sound forest and land management practices. This includes advising and assisting private
landowners in the management of native forests and the establishment and management of plantations on
private land. It works closely with private landowners and major stakeholders to develop and deliver a wide
range of services to ensure sustainable forest use.

Introduction
This Directory has been primarily developed to help private forest owners with logs for sale to
identify potential buyers. As well as enabling the forest owner to more easily locate and contact
primary wood processors, it also identifies the log types purchased by them.
There is also a mutual benefit: this Directory will also help the listed primary wood processors to
source logs from the Tasmanian private forest estate.
Who is listed?
The Directory is a listing of 42 of the estimated 51 primary wood processing businesses, regardless of
size, that Private Forests Tasmania (PFT) believed were operating within the State of Tasmania at the
time of publication. Their inclusion in the Directory has only been with their consent. All the data
was collected directly from them, including permission for PFT to list their business within this
Directory. Not all processors either replied or agreed to be included in the Directory but PFT hopes
that, over time, more will see the benefit of participating and that future editions of the Directory
will list a greater proportion of the State’s primary wood processors, regardless of size.
Who is a Primary Processor?
For the purposes of this Directory a primary wood processor has been defined as a business that
either manufactures a product from previously unprocessed logs or exports unprocessed logs.
Chain of Custody Certification
Forest certification is a process used by business to demonstrate sustainable forest management
(SFM) in their production forests. Certification is carried out by independent third parties who
regularly audit the performance of a business’s forest operations and management systems against
a standard.
Chain of custody certification schemes then enable wood from certified forest areas to be tracked
along the length of the value chain. It ultimately extends through to the manufactured and ecolabelled end-product being purchased by the consumer.
There are currently two performance-based certification schemes operating in Australia: the
Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme.
Forest Management Companies / Wood Brokers
A number of forest management companies and/or wood brokers operate in Tasmania. One, Tas
Land and Forest, has been included in this directory because they are also involved in primary wood
processing. The other forest management companies and/or wood brokers currently operating in
Tasmania are ‘AKS Forest Solutions’ (contact Tony Stonjek – 0419 573 205) and SFM Forest Products
(contact their Hobart office – (03) 6223 3536).

Consulting Forest Practices Officers
Landowners may find that they need a Forest Practices Plan (FPP) for some forest operations. As
well as forest management companies being able to prepare FPP’s, they can also be prepared by
consulting Forest Practices Officers (FPO’s)
The Forest Practices Authority (FPA) provides a register of consulting FPO’s authorised to certify
FPP’s.
