The Catholic Pro-Life Committee of North Texas Volume 19 Issue 1 Winter 2011 It’s Time for the Miraculous! By Karen Garnett, Executive Director There has never been a more urgent time to be a part of the pro-life movement, the greatest human rights campaign in history. God has blessed us in so many ways up to this point, and we look forward to His continued blessings in the years to come. As we keep our eyes on what is taking place nationally and internationally, we can never lose sight that the abortion holocaust is first and foremost a local holocaust. We are called to do everything we can to combat the culture of death and bring an end to the killing in our community. As we approach the four-decade mark of the battle, with 51 million lives already lost in our country, a Among the blessings, we still face the sober reality message has been resonating across our that, after 38 long years of fighting for the lives of movement the last several months, and that is that the unborn, and the restoration of their protection It’s Time for the Miraculous. In Matthew 17, Jeby law, sadly, as we start another year, with the sus tells his disciples: ―If you have faith the size of current state of our culture, we can expect more a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, attacks on human life, more attacks on our beloved ‗Move from here to there,‘ and it will move.‖ Not, Pope Benedict XVI, and more attacks on the ―you can say to this mountain,‖ but ―you will say to Church and the pro-life movement. We can expect this mountain.‖ It‘s time for the mountains to efforts for more government funding for groups move as never before — the mountain of each like Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of heart that is hardened to the beauty of life, the abortions on earth. Continued on p. 5 4,000 Stand Up Against Late-Term Abortions in Dallas The battle at 8616 Greenville Avenue is still being waged through peaceful prayer, silent witness and community outreach outside the Southwestern late-term abortion center in north Dallas. This facility opened its doors in October 2009 and has been killing babies through six months of pregnancy ever since. The facility is run by long-time abortionist Curtis Boyd, who has a deep-rooted abortion history in Dallas since 1973. Boyd admitted to Channel 8 News that he has performed 300,000 abortions since that time. But his victims are not just the unborn. Among the dead in his record is 22-year-old Vanessa Preston, who died in 1980 from complications after having an abortion performed by Boyd. Preston left behind a husband and another small child. Boyd continues to perform abortions today. The CPLC responded to this wound on the community by sponsoring a 2009-10 Winter 4,000 Stand Vigil for Life! Pictures of 2010 Bishop‘s Dinner 40 Days for Life Vigil (four hours per day) during which nearly 1,000 pro-lifers braved the cold to stand witness against this atrocity. Continuing the fight for life, the Dallas faithful appeared in the thousands to pray in front of this facility as part of the 2010 Fall 40 Days for Life campaign. The campaign kicked off with 40 Days National Director David Bereit‘s keynote address describing the special role the CPLC Continued on p. 4 Abortion center Worker Quits during YFL Boot Camp Largest Roe Memorial Ever; Bishop‘s orders: ―Double the crowd!‖ YFL Pure Reality Chastity Rally Largest crowd ever gathers for The Bishop’s 17th Annual Catholic Pro-Life Dinner On Saturday, April 10, 2010, more than 2,300 people gathered to celebrate ―The Splendor of the Gospel of Life‖ and to listen to keynote speaker Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston and Chairman of the U.S. Bishops‘ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and special guest Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood Director. Over 100 pro-life youth attended this year‘s Youth For Life Pro-Life Boot Camp hosted by the Catholic Pro-Life Committee of Dallas and Catholics Respect Life Ministry of Fort Worth. Held July 30th-August 4th, the Boot Camp theme was ―It‘s a Revolution — Theology of the Body.‖ Youth traveled from multiple states to hear pro-life testimonials and expert presentations on the Theology of the Body and other pro-life issues, as well as participating in Mass and volunteer projects. Among the pro-life skills the youth learn at Boot Camp is sidewalk counseling, including on-the-street training, while peacefully praying at local abortion centers. This year, that training brought with it amazing blessings. While the youth prayed outside an abortion center, a worker exited, approached a chaperone and said, ―I quit!‖ Another abortion worker expressed her desire to do the same and entered a continuing dialogue with Monica Ashour, co- founder of the Theology of the Body Evangelization Team (TOBET). At another abortion center where the youth prayed, four babies were saved when their mothers chose life, no doubt moved by the incredible witness of our youth standing up for their little brothers and sisters in the womb. 4,000 Stand Up (continued from p. 1) and Dallas played in the history of 40 Days for Life, hosting Check out the campaign blog for amazing stories from the the first vigil outside the originating city, and inspiring the street: 40daysforlife-dallas.blogspot.com. campaign to go national. With the largest crowd ever assembled in Dallas history in memorial of the tragic Roe v. Wade decision, the mood at the 2010 Roe Memorial Mass, Rally and Dallas March for Life seemed more intense, the need for change more clear. The Routh Street abortion center on North Central Expressway in Dallas saw 500 people descending from shuttle buses to pray the Rosary at 8 a.m. before heading to the downtown Cathedral for the pro-life Memorial Mass, where the crowd overflowed to the seating adjacent to the church and even outside. After Mass, 6,000 pro-life witnesses processed to the Earle Cabell Courthouse in downtown Dallas where Roe began. At the rally, Bishop Kevin Farrell told the cheering crowd, ―We must never give up! Fifty million people have already lost their lives because too many people have stood on the sidelines on this issue for too long!‖ This year‘s Roe Memorial Mass, Rally and Dallas March for Life will be Saturday, January 22, 2011 — exactly 38 years to the day from the tragic decision legalizing abortion in America and leading to the death of 51 million unborn children. Join Bishops Farrell, Vann, Seitz and Deshotel, diocesan clergy, and thousands of people of faith to pray for an end to abortion in our city, state and country, to witness publicly, and rally and march for a Culture of Life! (See schedule of Roe Memorial Events on p. 12.) Help us meet the Bishop’s challenge of 10,000 marching for life in 2011! Visit www.prolifedallas.org/roe for more information. We‘re already seeing major miracles: more than 4,000 faithful came out to pray during the Fall 40 Days for Life Vigil outside the Southwestern late-term abortion center; an abortion center worker quit while our youth were praying outside during summer Boot Camp; more mothers‘ lives are being transformed through our GEMS program; and the most miraculous of all — our sidewalk counselors helped the most mothers ever to choose life for their babies outside the Dallas abortion centers: 536 turnaways, and an additional 422 ―hopeful turnaways‖ in 2010! Praise our awesome God, Who is mighty to save! We begin this new year — the Year for the Miraculous — firmly resolved to furthering this great mission tasked to us all. We‘ll begin this month with what I am sure will be the largest turnout ever seen for the Dallas March for Life on January 22nd. Bishop Farrell has issued the call to see at least 10,000 pro-lifers marching with him in the city where Roe began. It‘s time for the miraculous — let‘s see it happen!
