January
2014
We would like to give a special thanks to all who
helped support school cents this year.
We participated in several fundraisers this year, which helped earn points for
Springville School Cents. On October 27th the National Honor Society helped by passing
out candy for the Special Needs Trick-or-Treat held at Lindale Mall. This earned
Springville 50 points and we also earned 50 points by participating in a costume contest.
From October 28th through November 1st we held a penny war at the high school. This
proved to be very successful as we collected $1256.34! The winning class received an ice
cream party. We then earned points by purchasing hats, scarves and mittens/gloves at
Lindale and 300 points for donating them to Four Oaks. We also earned points by purchasing non perishable goods at Lindale Hy-Vee and earned 500 points for donating
them to the Salvation Army.
We would like to thank you, whether you donated hats, scarves, mittens, nonperishable goods or shopped Lindale Mall and surrounding areas. This year we had a
large number of people who shopped Lindale Hy-Vee. Thank you so much! We appreciate all the effort Springville community does to support Springville Orioles!
The final awards ceremony is at Lindale Mall on January 11, 2014 at 11:30am. We
are currently in 1st place, so come see if we end up in 1st place. Lindale Mall is open
from 10 am-5 pm on Dec. 31. If you received gift cards for Lindale Mall please be sure to
use them by the end of this year to earn more points!
All receipts must be turned in by 5:00pm, Dec. 31st at the mall and by 4:00pm at any
of the drop boxes in Springville.

Dorian Festival
By Kellie Jorgenson
There will be a select group of High School Choir members participating in Luther College's Dorian Festival in Decorah on January 12-14. This event attracts participating
schools from all over the state. The students prepare specific pieces, practice as a group
on Sunday afternoon and Monday, and a concert is given to lucky winners of the family
lottery on Monday night. There are over 1500 students in the combined choir which fills
the floor of the concert hall at Luther College. Directors and families who were lucky
enough to be chosen in the lottery fill the balcony and get the treat of hearing one of the
most glorious sounds this side of heaven! Springville's participants this year will be Riley Ballantyne, Eddna Byers, Samantha Frederick, and Karlie Nulle. Riley and Eddna
will also be auditioning for scholarships to attend Luther next year. Please wish all four
of these wonderful ladies well and safe travels!

December/January News From The Nurse
BUSYNESS – A variety of projects has drawn my attention, including cleaning and organizing the medical areas
at the middle/high school; getting middle school and high school immunization cards completely updated; buying
supplies; implementing daily health reporting to Linn County Health Department; etc. At the elementary, we saw
88 students in the nurse’s office in November! There were a few cases of nausea and vomiting with fever, otherwise the rest were transient problems.
Since December 1, we have had 8+ absent days because of confirmed strep throat. Help prevent strep throat with
good nutrition, 8-10 hours of sleep, good handwashing/cleaning, no touching the “T Zone” of the face (eyes, nose,
mouth), coughing/sneezing into elbow or tissue and stay home with symptoms. Symptoms include a very sore
throat, muscle weakness and fever. Diagnosis is made by the doctor with a throat swab. Treatment is a full course
of antibiotics. If strep throat goes untreated or only part of the antibiotics are taken, it can lead to a rash and damaged heart valves. Return to school 24 hours after fever free AND the first dose of antibiotic.
The MS/HS has had one case of mono and one case of Influenza A. Mono presents with fever and sore throat and
must be diagnosed by a test ordered by the doctor. The germ is passed through saliva, so good hand washing, covering the mouth for coughing and sneezing, proper disposal of tissues, avoiding sharing drinks and food and avoid
kissing. (Mono has been called the “kissing disease”.) Influenza A exhibits acute respiratory symptoms, feeling
very sick and fever. The doctor diagnoses with a test and treatment includes an antiviral and antibacterial (if needed, because of a secondary bacterial infection like pneumonia), hospitalization (only if treatment requires rehydration, monitoring etc.). The recommendations listed in the previous paragraph are important, too. If you have not
gotten a flu shot yet, the holiday break might be a good time.
BULLETIN BOARD – Stop in and see the SAFETY: HANDWASHING, EYE AND TOY SAFETY bulletin
board decorated by the first grader’s snowflakes!
HEALTH AWARENESS
December 1-31: Safe Toy and Gifts Month; Prevent Blindness America
Avoid toys with parts that could come off and be swallowed or lodge in the windpipe, that could fly off and hit
the eye, or that could contain lead paint.
December 1-7 National Handwashing Awareness Week
Wash hands with running water and soap and rub your hands to release the germs for as long as it takes to sing
Happy Birthday or use hand sanitizer before eating and after touching the “T Zone”.
Be Safe and Stay Well!

Hy-Vee Cash 4 Students
In 2012 the Cedar Rapids/Marion Hy-Vee stores began a local fundraising program for area schools, Cash 4 Students. It runs on
a similar receipt collection process as the Lindale School Cents program.
Since both the Hy-Vee program AND School Cents are going to require the collection of receipts please turn your receipts in at
one of the Springville drop boxes. We will have the receipts stamped at Lindale Mall and turn in the receipts for points for HyVee Cash 4 Students.
You can also choose to have your Hy-Vee receipts validated at Lindale Mall before turning them in at school.
Thank you for continuing to save
Marion and Cedar Rapids Hy-Vee receipts
for 2013-2014
This includes Hy-Vee Drugstores
and gas stations too!
