Build Background
Read the title to the children and talk with them about the cover photo. Ask what the
children in the photo are doing. Encourage children to use their knowledge of soccer
to think about the book. Ask questions such as the following: Have you ever played or
watched a soccer game? What did you like the most about the game?
Introduce the Text
Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar
language and vocabulary. Explain important text features, such as the use of labels to
identify certain objects in a photo. Here are some suggestions:
Page 2: Explain that this book is about the game of soccer and how to play it.
Suggested language: Turn to page 2. What is happening in each photo? Soccer is
a game that is loved around the world. Say loved. Find the word loved in the first
sentence and put your finger under it. Why do you think people love soccer so
much? Why is it so popular around the world? Where have you played soccer?
Page 3: Turn to page 3. Can you find the soccer ball and leg pads in the photo?
Now read the labels. Labels can help you understand words and pictures. What
makes a soccer ball different from a basketball?
Page 4: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them
read. Where do soccer players play the game? They play in an open place called a
field. Point to the soccer field in this photo. Now point to the players. Where are
the people who watch the soccer game?
Page 5: In this picture, the soccer player is moving the ball down the field. Is he
using his feet or his hands to get the ball down to the other end?
Now turn back to the beginning and read to find out more about soccer.
Words to Know
Have children turn to the Words to Know at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and
then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read.

supports their problem solving ability.
Revisit the Text
Personal Response
Ask children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they
liked best about the book, or what they found interesting.
Suggested language: What did you learn about soccer that you didn’t know before?
Ways of Thinking
As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points.
Thinking Within the Text
Thinking Beyond the Text

soccer before playing a game.

when you play a game, even if
you lose.
• The labels help readers
understand some soccer terms.
• To score a goal, you kick the ball
into the net.
• Soccer is popular because
people of all ages can play it.

Choices for Support
Concepts of Print
Children should understand that they say one word for one group of letters when they
read.
Phonemic Awareness and Word Work
Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:
• Words with Consonant Clusters Materials: index cards, box. Write the following
words from the book on index cards: play, sport, place, grass, score, broke. Put the
words in a box. Ask children to choose an index card and read the word. Write the
word on the board. Help children identify and circle the consonant cluster in each
word. Work with children to use the initial cluster in a new word. (play, plan; sport,
spot, etc. )
• Take Apart Compound Words Materials: index cards. Write the following words on
index cards: football, cannot, everyone, inside, playground, doorbell. Ask children to
choose an index card and read the compound word aloud. Work with children to find
the two small words in each compound. Then work with them to write a sentence with
the compound words.

Vocabulary Practice
Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulary questions on BLM 30.1.
Responding
Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11.
Building Vocabulary
Sports Words
Build on the sports words used in Soccer. Have children look at the photo on page 3 and
talk about what they see.
Suggested language: Let’s think of another sport that we all like to play. Let’s talk about
the different things we will need to play this sport. As children suggest different nouns
related to the sport, write their responses on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin
the list with the words: To play _______, we need ______.
(Possible suggestions: To play basketball, we need a net; a ball; teams; sneakers.)
After children have suggested the sports words, read the list together, pointing to each
word as you read. Look at all the things we need to play sports!
Writing Prompt
Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their responses, using the
writing prompt on page 6.
Draw a picture of a soccer player playing in a game.
