ESU FOR KIDS 2017 SUMMER COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
All courses are available for enrollment up to TUESDAY, MAY 30, 2017. From May 31 to July 7, please check
back with www.esu.edu./esu4kids to see which courses are running and which courses had to be cancelled due to
low or no enrollment.
**Remember, it only takes four students to make a class happen.

8:00-9:00 am courses (5 offered)
• (A1) Archaeology for Beginners (ages 10-18) - Instructor: Heide Molinaro
NEW!!! It’s time for you to discover lost, ancient cultures and people. You’ll set up a dig and enter a
tomb. You’ll clean and repair artifacts. You’ll learn how to examine details and figure out what time
period objects may have come from. There’s so much more for you to explore in this course!
• (A2) Butterflies, Bees, and Birds (ages 6-11) - Instructor: Alicia Shaffer
Attention all Nature Lovers...in this class you will learn the life cycle of the butterfly, what makes the
bees so important and how they help the environment. We will all take a walk outside for some bird
watching. Come enjoy a fun filled time of stories, songs, crafts, and games.
• (A3) Comic Book Heroes Role Play (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Scott Hnasko
7th YEAR OFFERED! Spider-Man or Hulk? Batman or Wonder Woman? Iron Man or Batgirl?
Which Marvel or DC Super Hero will YOU be in this exciting role play course? The famous super
hero movies come to life, and YOU use problem solving skills and a multisided dice to decide what the
heroes do! This course encourages teamwork and creativity.
• (A4) Science Quest (ages 8-12) - Instructor: Becca Perri
NEW!!! In this class, you'll get to think out-of-the-box and think scientifically! You will be able to make
hypotheses, observations and perform exciting and mind-boggling experiments, just like a real scientist!

• (A5) Scrapbooking for Beginners (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Brittany Moloughney
NEW!!! Do you love to scrapbook? Do you want to learn more about the different pages you can create?
Let’s create a scrapbook together that is unlike any scrapbook you've seen before! Share it with your
family and friends!

• (B1) Beginner Guitar (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Dave Libecap
15th YEAR OFFERED BY THE SAME INSTRUCTOR! Have you ever wanted to learn guitar? This
course starts with the basics – chords, scales, fingering, & tuning. By the end, you’ll learn how to play
simple guitar songs! Requirement: Acoustic or electric guitar
• (B2) Beginner Tennis (ages 6-12) - Instructor: Stacey Brescancine
4th YEAR OFFERED!!! This course is geared for kids who have never picked up a racket before! They
will first learn the rules of the game in addition to the numerous tennis moves used to ace opponents. By
the end of the course, kids will be able to play full tennis matches! Requirement: your own tennis racket
and water bottle
• (B3) Comic Book Villains Role Play (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Scott Hnasko
2nd YEAR OFFERED!!! Work with the instructor to choose a comic book villain you’d like to be –
Green Goblin, Joker, Reverse Flash, Catwoman...you could be from Marvel, DC, or any other comic
universe. From there, you’ll work together with classmates to problem solve and go on exciting role
play adventure
• (B4) Conversational Spanish (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Ana Espinoza-Beckworth
NEW! This course is designed for those students who have taken Spanish levels 1 or more. We will be
actively reviewing and participating in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural activities. This
is a creative course that will push you beyond the textbook and help build your Spanish fluency levels.
• (B5) Exploring Pennsylvania Nature (ages 6-11) - Instructor: Alicia Shaffer
This is a must do for all Wildlife and Nature Lovers. Learn about plants, animals, wind and water through
fun-filled activities. You will enjoy and appreciate nature in a whole new way!

• (B6) Fabulous Food Art (ages 10-18) - Instructor: Heide Molinaro
In this course, you’ll learn about famous artists and their work and recreate their art with FOOD! Each
day you’ll make an art masterpiece with food. You can have your art and EAT IT, too – the food pyramid
of Giza, fruit and veggie portraits, even Munch’s The Scream on toast!
• (B7) Indoor Field Hockey (ages 8-15) - Instructor: Becca Perri
NEW! The game of field hockey is fun-filled, action-packed and a great confidence builder. You will
learn skills, be active, make new friends and have a blast! Prerequisite: Prior field hockey experience.
Requirements: Shin guards, cleats and/or sneakers, water bottle, mouth guard
• (B8) Pixar Pictures (ages 8-14) – Instructor: Brittany Moloughney
In this class we will get inspired by the popular Disney's Pixar movies to create works of art. This class
will go "INSIDE OUT” by recreating the characters of these famous films. The children will get to create
and show off which INCREDIBLE superhero they want to be and perhaps stumble upon some funny
MONSTERS along the way. One thing is for certain, there is no limit on where this journey will take us,
but we hope it will go "TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!"
• (B9) Robotics for Beginners (ages 9-15) - Instructor: Philip Lazowski
NEW!!! This curriculum combines the “coolness” of robotics with the excitement of head to head
competition to inspire and engage students. Students will walk through the design and build a mobile
robot to play a sport-like game. During this process they will learn key STEM principles, and robotics
concepts. At the culmination of this class, they will compete head-to-head against their peers.

• (C1) 3-D Crayon Creations (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Heide Molinaro
NEW!!! Crayons aren’t just for coloring in this fun and exciting course! We will be shaving, melting
gluing, painting…all with crayons! We will even be creating 3D crayon art! Come prepared to color
outside of the lines and have a great time in this course taught by a professional art teacher!

• (C2) Beginner Piano (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Dave Libecap
This basic course will show you how you to play piano. You’ll start with harmony, fingering, scales, and
rhythm. You’ll read music. You’ll play simple songs for friends! Equipment requirement: You must
bring your own Piano Keyboard each day, which we can store for you if you choose to take other
classes during the day.
• (C3) Blast Off Into Our Solar System (ages 6-11) - Instructor: Alicia Shaffer
NEW!!! This course is a fun-filled way for you to explore astronomy with the sun and planets in our
beautiful galaxy. You’ll enjoy games, songs and crafts on our exciting educational voyage.
• (C4) Chew, Crunch, Munch (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Becca Perri
NEW!!! In this class, you'll learn to create delicious masterpieces in the kitchen! You'll be able to cook and create
delicious masterpieces, all while learning the fun basics of cooking! Mmmmm…Can you say tasty?
• (C5) Disney Arts & Crafts (ages 8-14) - Instructor: Brittany Moloughney
NEW!!! This is an arts and crafts class dedicated to all things Disney. Put on your mouse ears as we
explore the heartwarming themes of popular Disney movies and create art based on those movies. Can
you just not wait to be king? Let start off by creating your perfect crown or tiara for the occasion! Not all
stories begin with "Once Upon a Time," but this course will definitely live "Happily Ever After."
• (C6) Intermediate Tennis (ages 9-16) - Instructor: Stacey Brescancine
2nd YEAR OFFERED!!! Intermediate tennis will allow students to become better tennis players! More
intense drills and more tennis shots will be taught. Prerequisite: Beginner Tennis or related tennis
experience. Requirement: your own tennis racket and water bottle
• (C7) Robotics for Intermediates (ages 9-15) - Instructor: Philip Lazowski
NEW!!! Students will walk through the design and build a mobile robot to play a sport-like game.
During this process they will learn key STEM principles, and robotics concepts. At the culmination of
this class, they will compete head-to-head against their peers. The challenges are more difficult than
the Introduction to Robotics class. This class will also introduce students to robot programming
without a remote control.

• (C8) Secrets of Comic Book Villains (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Scott Hnasko
2nd YEAR OFFERED!!! Joker! Red Skull! Dr. Doom! Learn a brief history of comic books and
become an expert on famous comic book villains! Each day will be an exploration of a new villain.
We’ll talk about the heroes they fight and what makes the characters evil and nasty! Win prizes in our
comic trivia contests!
• (C9) Spanish for Beginners (ages 6-11) - Instructor: Ana Espinoza-Beckworth
2nd YEAR OFFERED! This is an introductory course to expose children to the Spanish language and
culture. Students will experience language through songs, rhymes, bingo games, and a variety of hands-on
activities.

• (D1) Advanced Tennis (ages 10-18) - Instructor: Stacey Brescancine
2nd YEAR OFFERED!!! Advanced Tennis is designed for students who want to take their skills and
experiences to the next level! With your hard work and guidance from a patient instructor, ESU could be
your gateway to Wimbledon! Prerequisite: Beginner Tennis or related tennis experience. Requirement:
your own tennis racket and water bottle
• (D2) Art Smart (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Brittany Moloughney
3rd YEAR OFFERED!!! You say you’d like to paint? You’d like to sketch and draw? You’d like to
know how to weave? This course will excite and inspire your creative side. People will marvel at your
artwork!
• (D3) Chemistry for Kids (ages 6-11) - Instructor: Alicia Shaffer
Welcome to our lab! We will conduct chemistry experiments while making and playing with Goo and
other fun creations like gak, waterbeads, playdoh, and sand. Let’s get a little messy and learn how
different substances combine!

great way to enjoy some quiet time and socialize you’re your peers while being creative and generating

• (D6) Learn to be a Master Chef 2 (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Becca Perri
NEW – by popular demand!!! Do you love food? Do you love to eat? Do you love to cook? If you said,
"Yes!" to any or all three, then, this is the class for you! Learn to cook just like a chef! In this class, you
will learn all the techniques and basics a chef has to know to cook meals that will "WOW!" their guests!
By the end of this class, you will be cooking confidently, just like Bobby Flay or Giada De Laurentiis!

• (D7) Marvel and DC Comics Card Game Adventures (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Scott Hnasko
2nd YEAR OFFERED!!! Explore the exciting worlds of DC and Marvel Comics as you play strategy
card games that are both cooperative AND competitive! Guide your heroes to victory against some of
their greatest foes. Save innocent bystanders as you learn about heroes and villains you never knew
before!

• (D9) Star Wars Role Play (ages 8-18) - Instructor: Dave Libecap
12th YEAR OFFERED! May the force be with you during this exciting roleplaying course designed for
Star Wars fans! Be a Jedi or give in to the dark side! Players are encouraged to bring multisided dice.

Emojis are everywhere! Whether you are happy, excited, or laughing, there is an emoji for you! Let’s
turn our favorite emojis into art -- pillows, pins, cases, even food!

what is a reasonable rate to charge and so much more. You too can be a rock star babysitter. I will show

Your child will repower the motors, gears, lights, fans, and components found in broken machines and
recyclables to make their own innovations in the Maker Studio.

Cha Cha Cha, and many more Latin style dance moves. Be ready to move to the beat and create your

• (E7) Pastel and Charcoal Drawing for Beginners (ages 10-18) – Instructor: Heide Molinaro
NEW!!! This course is a dream for beginning artists. An experienced art teacher will show you how to
draw with vine charcoal and compressed charcoal. You’ll draw and shade animals with charcoal. You
will create your own chalk pastels and use them. How about oil pastels? You’ll learn and use techniques
to make your art look vibrant and three-dimensional.

NEW!!! An escape room is an adventure game where students are “locked” up in a series of rooms. In
order to “escape”, students must work together as a team to solve a series of puzzles and riddles. The
clock is always ticking…will you be asking your teachers for hints? Can you and your team “escape” in
time? Get ready to laugh and think and problem solve!
• (F3) Everyday Crafts (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Aliya Grindle
Do you like to make crafts? Come see what you can create with various items that are lying around
your house. You’ll make a fun craft each day.
• (F4) Fantasy Art of the Movies (ages 10-18) – Instructor: Heide Molinaro
NEW!!! You’ve seen animals and creatures in the movies. Now a professional art teacher will guide you
to create them for yourself! You will use modeling clay to make a character, then create a mini-movie
with it. You’ll draw a dragon and animate it using a flipbook technique. You’ll sketch, draw, and paint
fantastic beasts!
• (F5) Just Dance (ages 6-18) - Instructor: Ana Espinoza-Beckworth
This course is designed for any students who want to dance and have fun. We will compile a “student
centered playlist” and learn a variety of dances. Join us if you are interested in learning some popular
dance moves.
• (F6) Pokémon Activities and Crafts (ages 6-11) - Instructor: Alicia Shaffer
NEW!!! Which Pokémon do you like? Choose your favorites and we’ll turn them into works of art. Have
fun playing Pokémon-related games and learning about more about the past, present and future of
Pokémon.

NEW by popular demand!!! Everyone needs to let loose, have fun and get a little girly once in a while!
In this class, you'll get to do just that! Make your own make up, paint nails, and make adorable DIY
crafts to decorate your room, your wardrobe, your locker, or even yourself!
• (G5) Nature’s Alphabet (ages 6-13) - Instructor: Cathy Klingler
NEW!!! A is for Astronomy, B is for Butterfly, C is for Collect…this isn’t your usual alphabet! Each day
of camp offers a new way to look at the world around us, through hands-on learning with ESU’s own
Schisler Museum of Wildlife & Natural History and McMunn Planetarium. Get your science on and
explore the ABCs in a whole new way!
• (G6) Play With Your Food (ages 6-10) - Instructor: Aliya Grindle
2nd YEAR OFFERED!!! We will be creating (and eating!) edible artworks of all kinds! From carrots to candy, we
will carve, print, paint, mold and sculpt a whole cast of characters from the four food groups and beyond.
• (G7) Pokémon Battles and More! (ages 6-11) - Instructor: Alicia Shaffer
NEW!!! Pokémon fans unite! It’s time to learn and talk about all things Pokémon. This class will be filled
with Pokémon card battles.
*Equipment requirements: Please have each student bring in their own set of Pokémon cards. Children
are responsible for their personal deck.*
