Mia will be leading Hands-on Wellness on Tuesdays this month. Each Tuesday, she will take talk about a different aspect of fitness and health, a well as walk you through a short practice to put what you’ve learned into action. We have become a motionless society and the repercussions show in our health, our energy and the prevalence of preventable disease. Remember: “nothing will change if nothing changes.” Small changes in the amount of time you move each day can reap huge rewards. You don’t need to lose weight or become an athlete to improve your health. But you do need to move! Mini Golf Wednesday, July 6th leaving at 11:30PM Join us when we travel to Minnetrista to visit Big Stone Mini Golf and Sculpture Garden. This is a locally owned mini golf course created by an artist that wanted to share his art in a more permanent way. Sign up to enjoy mini golf and support local art! Please bring $1.00 to help towards the cost of the event. Pets at NWCSP Tuesday, July 5th Please join us for a Pet Day this month! NWCSP believes in the benefits that pets bring to our lives! Reminder: please help keep our space safe and comfortable for all; just bring your pets on designated pet day. If you have any questions, speak with any CSP staff Understanding Metabolism, Medications and Weight loss – Brown Bag Discussion Monday, July 11th at 12PM Friday, July 29th at 2PM Mia will lead an educational session and answer your questions about metabolism: what it is, how medication affects it and how diet and exercise can, or cannot, help keep your metabolism burning high. Metabolism is an important factor in weight loss because it determines the minimal amount of energy you expend each day. The types of foods you eat and the types of exercise you choose can also affect metabolism. Surprisingly, stress and how you deal with it, plays a role in determining your metabolic set point, too. Voluntary Smoke Free Day! Wednesday, July 13th Join us for another voluntary smoke free day. We will offer some educational information, coloring, stress balls, mints/gum, and prizes. Come participate and support your peers. Hope to see you there! Drawing Made Easy Every Wednesday in July from 1-2:30PM Lighthouse member Debbie leads “Drawing Made Easy” in July! This class is for beginners, especially people who think they can’t draw. Anyone can create realistic drawings when they learn how. Come to “Drawing Made Easy” every Wednesday in July at 1pm. We will be in the art area. WORDS OF WELLNESS FROM MIA Feeling Stressed or Sluggish? You may just need a drink of water! Sound too easy? The link between water and stress reduction is well documented. All of our organs, including our brains, need water to function properly. If you’re dehydrated, your body isn’t running well -- and that can lead to stress. “Studies have shown that being just half a liter dehydrated can increase your cortisol levels,” says Amanda Carlson, RD, director of performance nutrition at Athletes’ Performance, a trainer of world-class athletes. “Cortisol is one of those stress hormones. Staying in a good hydrated status can keep your stress levels down. When you don’t give your body the fluids it needs, you’re putting stress on it, and it’s going to respond to that.” Cooking Class from the U of M Extension Office Join a cooking class group that will meet weekly to help you gain skills in the kitchen. This group plans to begin in August. See Mia or Steph if you would like to sign up. Celebrate Diversity July 14--Bastille Day marks the anniversary of July 14, 1789 when a group of Parisian revolutionaries attacked the Bastille, a French prison. The revolutionaries attacked the Bastille looking for gun powder to go with the rifles they had recently stolen from the Invalides. This event marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The anniversary of this attack became the French national holiday and is observed on July 14th each year. Mark L. Rita L. Evie L. Edith H. Mike S. Victoria S. Michael T. Anne V. Denise V. Rolland B.
