Unit #: ____2____ Subject(s): _______Science__________ Grade(s): ____7___ Designer(s): Ellsworth, Harrington, Rodriguez STAGE 1 – DESIRED RESULTS Unit Title: Understanding Weather and Climate Understandings: Students will understand that… The cycling of matter in and out of the atmosphere influences weather and climate patterns. Global heating by the sun is the driving force behind weather and climate patterns. The interaction between air masses affects the weather patterns in a given area. Essential Questions: 1. How does the cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere affect weather patterns? 2. How does the sun’s energy impact weather and climate patterns? 3. What is relationship between air masses; high and low pressure systems and frontal boundaries to weather patterns? Students will know: The cycling of water in and out of the atmosphere affects weather patterns. The movement and interaction of air masses influence the weather of a specific area. The sun heats the atmosphere, which influences the wind patterns of Earth. The global winds and jet stream have a major impact on weather and climate. Students will be able to: Describe the water cycle and understand how it relates to weather patterns. Relate the movement of air masses to the formation of storms and other weather conditions. Explain how the uneven heating of the Earth causes global and local winds patterns. Describe the influence of global and local wind patterns on weather and climate.
