2013 Report to the Community
Family Ties. Community Connections.
Family Ties.
Community Connections.
A Message from the
Executive Director
Throughout the Wolf River area, the members of this community have become family for each
other. Whether traditional, extended, or blended, family is a place where many find stability and
security. Family also is a place where dreams can be shared, supported and launched.
Our 2013 Report to the Community highlights the many ways you have helped us touch the
lives of patients and families at a time of vital need. Collectively, generous donors helped us
provide more efficient and effective care via access to medical records in the MyThedaCare portal.
Donations have enabled patients in the Emergency Department to get a fresh change of clothes
if needed after an injury or illness. And the community supported scholarships and clinical
education so our nursing team could be even more responsive to patients’ hopes and dreams.
Together, our efforts represent the theme of this report: Family Ties. Community Connections.
The end of 2013 also marked the beginning of a new family: The ThedaCare Family of
Foundations, Inc. Our “new family” is comprised of seven already established member
Foundations that support the hospitals and programs within ThedaCare, including the
Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation. You are invited to read more about this new family
on page 5. We believe that combining the efforts of these Foundations is a prudent use of
financial, environmental and staff resources.
Heather J. Stern
Executive Director
Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation
ThedaCare Family of Foundations, Inc.
“The bond that links your true
family is not one of blood,
but of respect and joy in each
other’s life.”
As the healthcare landscape is altered by changes in insurance plans and government initiatives,
we promise to remain true to our commitment to helping families in this community maintain
their health, return quickly to good health in the event of injury or illness, or to make a peaceful,
dignified transition at the end of life.
— Richard Bach, American novelist
We do this work together. Thank you for supporting our family so that we can support yours.
Sincerely,
Heather Stern

Other big and little benefits of the new chemotherapy
space include:

The new Chemotherapy Suite at New London Family Medical
Center, funded in part by a past WRAHF grant, allows more
patients to receive their chemotherapy locally, rather than
drive into Appleton (or even farther). In addition to the extra
space, the new suite adds comfort when it’s needed most,
privacy options for procedures or for when a patient doesn’t
feel well from the medicines, and – most importantly – safety.
“There was so little space before the remodel that one nurse
would have to stay in the room next door to chart while
the other had to stand the entire shift with our back to the
patients,” says oncology nurse Patti Radix, RN. “Now we can
both be in the room at all times available to administer the
chemo or to tend to their needs.”
Room for a family member to visit
Privacy curtains if necessary
Side tables that swing up on the side to place equipment on
Hooks behind each chair for coats and purses
Televisions with headphones for long treatments
View of Mosquito Hill versus the roof
Blanket warmers
A small cart for snacks and coffee
Bathroom in the suite instead of across the hall
“We made the old space work, of course,” Patti explains, “but
the new space helps make the patients more comfortable at a
time when everything is uncomfortable and frustrating. We’re
so fortunate to live in a community that takes care of each
other!”

Ways to Give
It is the purpose and distinct privilege of the Wolf River Area
Healthcare Foundation to help people like you – people who
want to make a difference in our community’s healthcare –
find worthwhile projects and programs in need of support.
We bridge the gap between your good intentions and making
it happen.
Make an immediate impact or provide long-term support
in a variety of ways:
Gifts of Cash. These unrestricted funds often make a difference
immediately by supporting programs, education and research.
One nice option is that cash gifts of any amount can be made
in your own name, in memory or honor of a loved one, or even
anonymously.
Gifts of Appreciated Assets. Non-cash assets, such as common
stock, may offer additional tax advantages and also help avoid
capital gains tax on the appreciated value.
Trusts & Annuities. Significant tax advantages make charitable
trusts and gift annuities an attractive option. With a trust, the
donor receives a financial return on the donation throughout his/
her lifetime.
Endowed Named Funds. Donors can establish an endowment
fund to support a particular program or initiative. Only tapping
into the interest, the principle remains intact, ensuring that
important programs will be sustained for future generations.
Gifts by Will. Inserting the sentence “I bequeath $_____ or
_____% of my estate to Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation”
allows you to support this cause so close to your heart even after
you’re gone. It may cost you nothing today, but will certainly help
serve our mission – and your mission – in the future. A willed gift
can also help reduce the donor’s estate taxes.
Other. The Foundation staff is happy to discuss any other gift
arrangements or naming opportunities, as well. Please contact
the Foundation office at (920) 531-2221 for more information.
Financial Overview

Foundation remained strong in 2013. Gift revenue was up more

successful fundraising events, meaningful relationships with our
charitable sponsors, and generous individual contributions. The
result was $11,500 in grants given to improve the health of area
families and local communities. Thank you for your support!

Your Family’s
Care Our Family’s Mission
In the summer of 2012, a representative group from
ThedaCare’s seven foundations began meeting to create
a future of improved collaboration, shared resources and
gains in operational efficiencies. This new group, named
The Radix Rugland ad hoc committee after co-chairs
Harry Radix and Walter Rugland, engaged in working and
planning sessions for more than a year, culminating in the
creation of the ThedaCare Family of Foundations, Inc.
We welcome the following member Foundations to
the Family and we look forward to sharing more stories
about our collective work throughout the year and in our
inaugural version of the ThedaCare Family of Foundations,
Inc. Report to the Community in 2015.
Appleton Medical Center Foundation
Community Hospice Foundation, which shall be
renamed the ThedaCare Hospice Foundation
George F. Peabody Foundation,
which shall be renamed the Peabody Heritage Fund
Riverside Health Foundation
Shawano Medical Center Foundation
Theda Clark Medical Center Foundation
Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation, which shall be
renamed the ThedaCare Foundation – New London
The sole purpose of The ThedaCare Family of Foundations
and its member Foundations who have designated funds
within the Family (see list to the right) is to continue to
maximize the value of each gift received to improve the
healthcare experience for patients and their families.
While all one Family, the member foundations play a
vital role in bringing gifts to life in your community. All
current gift arrangements and future gifts received will
be used in exactly the way expressed by the donor. The
underpinning of the work of the Radix Rugland group
was to ensure that all gifts given locally would stay local
if desired by the donor. The Family of Foundations’ work
will be governed by two representatives from each
member Foundation.
Officers leading The ThedaCare Family of
Foundations, Inc. Board of Directors for 2014 are:
Wyon Wiegratz, President
Theda Clark Medical Center Foundation
Dean High, Vice President
Appleton Medical Center Foundation
Whether gifts support a local initiative or a regional
program, such as hospice services, our commitment
remains to extend the value of each gift to its fullest
and best use. The creation of the ThedaCare Family of
Foundations means that we will become more efficient
with the “back of house work” and more importantly,
ThedaCare will make a renewed investment in the
operations of the Foundation Family so your gift is used
to its fullest to improve patient care.

Clothes for ER Patients
When patients come to the emergency department, the last
thing on their minds is to grab a change of clothes. A grant
from the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation provides basic
clothing to ER patients who may need a replacement due to rips,
fluids, or emergency removal to perform a test or procedure.
After an accident or injury, the little extras can make all the
difference.
Infant Car Seats
The Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation funded car seat
training for four nurses in The Family Birth Center. “The ability to
properly fit car seats for new parents will allow us to maximize
the safety of the children in the event there were to be a car
accident,” says Sue Jochman, supervisor for the Birth Center.
Thank You!
Surgery and Outpatient Treatment Center nurse Angela
Schneider, RN, was able to pursue specialized training and
certification in wound care thanks to funding for continuing
education through the Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation.
The roughly $4,000 in scholarship assistance enables New
London Family Medical Center to provide wound care on site
rather than rely on nurses from the Appleton area to provide
coverage sporadically.
“We were seeing an increased need for wound care along with
many patients coming in with pretty complicated wounds,”
Angela explains. “Providing proper assessment and care in a
timely manner makes a big difference since infections and other
conditions can progress quickly.”

Grants & Scholarships
Angela is impressed that our local rural hospital was
committed to providing specialty care usually only available
at a bigger facility, citing the following benefits:
134 Babies
We welcomed 134
babies in the Birthing
Center at New London
Family Medical Center in
2013, making our family
– and many of yours –
a little bigger.
• Patients who have a good experience have the confidence
to get care locally for more conditions.
• Specialty care keeps the hospital growing.
• By enabling local providers to continue to grow
professionally, we retain talent and provide motivation to
always improve.
“I am extremely grateful and thankful to donors and the
Foundation for the opportunity to advance my skills,” Angela
shares. “Without your support, I never would have been able
to get this specialized training.”

on September 17, 2013, at the Crystal
Falls Banquet Facility in New London. The
theme was Casino Royale: Share Your
Luck With Us!
Over 200 guests enjoyed dinner and
entertainment along with raffles, silent
and live auctions to raise nearly $60,000
for the MyThedaCare initiative. Guests
could bid on donated packages that
ranged from vacation getaways in Door
County and Orlando, FL, to Green Bay
Packer tickets, guided hunting trips, and
even private chef dinner parties. There’s

Wolf River
Sturgeon Shuffle
“We like to say the Sturgeon Shuffle is about Giving Back and Getting Fit. It’s a great
workout – whether it’s a competitive run or just a pleasant morning walk – while raising
funds to improve the health of our community”
— Heather Stern, Executive Director
More than 500 runners and walkers came
together on April 27, 2013 for the third annual
Wolf River Sturgeon Shuffle.
Cleverly planned to coincide with the time of
year that these amazing fish usually spawn,
the event course takes participants along the
Sturgeon Trail to catch a glimpse of this other
famed “sturgeon run.” Sturgeon are amazing
fish that date back to prehistoric times. Each
fish can live more than a century and can weigh
200+ pounds! Every year, racers get a chance to
observe the sturgeon in one of the few places
they spawn in the entire state.

the surrounding communities through outreach
programs to improve local health and wellness.
