Principal’s Message
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are about to begin February, a month where we will be celebrating reading with the theme of “How
Does Your Garden Grow?” We will be hosting various activities such as special bulletin board displays,
guest readers, and a goal for 3000 books to be read. Although we specifically celebrate reading this
month we continue to focus on reading all year long.
A reminder that the school is closed for a professional development day on Monday, February 4th and
Monday, February 18th for Louis Riel Day.
We have many special events for students this month. All families are invited to a free concert with the
Frontier Fiddlers on February15. Please check the calendar and watch for notes with details of fieldtrips.
This month at our Parent Advisory we will be looking at the Division’s Priorities and asking for your
feedback on future priorities as well as asking for your input on the Division’s Budget process. Please
join us on February 20th at 9 am as we value your support.
A special Thank You to our Patrols and Crossing Guards, Ms Capistrano and Ms Hornick who are out
during this very cold weather, ensuring your children’s safety.

The Brody Blog
Brody
Michael
We had a special guest on January 9, 2013. The special guest was Michael Redhead
Champagne. He talked about the his past and he also talked about the Seven Teachings; they are
Truth, Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom and Humility. Remember to use the Seven
Teachings in your life. Michael’s past was harder than my past because he was poor, didn’t
know his mom and dad that well and he was also adopted, but I think he should be the king of
the world! Bye Bye! Check out my Blog next
month!
- Brody
Parents and select students were invited for
a Question and Answer session in the
Library after Michael’s Presentation.
Have you noticed the Seven Teachings
being painted by our students in the
front hallway? In Aboriginal Culture,
each Teaching is represented by an
animal. Can you name all the animals
and which Teaching they represent?
Turn the newsletter upside down to check the
answers!
Turtle - Truth , Wolf – Humility, Bear - Courage,
Buffalo - Respect , Eagle - Love, Beaver - Wisdom,
Sabe - Honesty.
The Learning Lens
An In-Depth Look into Classroom Learning
Classroom Teacher:
Ms Fissel
December and January have been
busy months for the students in Room
204. The creativity and independence
of the students has been incredible.
In December, we were working on
building and programming Lego
Robots. Students designed their own
courses while incorporating some
simple machines and then they all
programmed their robots to
maneuver through the course.
When we returned to school in
January, we started working with
Leigh Anne Kehler, a drama artist
who works with classrooms through
the Learning Through the Arts
Program. We have been exploring the
characteristics of folktales through
storytelling and drama tableaus.
The Learning Lens
An In-Depth Look into Classroom Learning
Room 206
Classroom Teacher: Ms Connie Brum
Room 206 is learning about maintaining a healthy body. We have been reading and learning about the human
skeleton. Did you know that adults have 206 bones and babies have 350 bones? Are you wondering why
babies have more bones than adults? Check it up on the internet. Our class will be learning about the
respiratory components such as how the lungs take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. The components of
the circulatory system, the heart, blood vessels just to name a few. We will be using the Canada Food Guide to
help us learn about a good balanced meal that will keep our bodies healthy.
Another way to stay healthy is by exercising. Students
at JMK participate in many physical activities that are
also fun and build teamwork skills. Team sports are a
great way to stay active and have fun!
Musical Notes
Our choir will be continuing to rehearse on Wednesdays at lunch for the Winnipeg Music Festival. Our performance is scheduled for Friday, March 8 during the 12:30 p.m. class at Westminster
United Church (745 Westminster). Families/friends are encouraged to come and watch our choir
sing! There is a fee to attend of $4, but children under 12 are free.
Handbell group 1 will continue to rehearse on Tuesdays at 9:05 a.m. for the Winnipeg Music Festival
but Group 2 will have to change their rehearsal time from Friday at lunch to Tuesday at lunch for
the next few weeks as some of the handbell players have a conflict on Friday at lunch. New
permission letters have already been sent out to the families affected. Both of our handbell groups
will be performing in the Music Festival on Monday, March 11 during the 10:00 a.m. class at Clifton
School (1070 Clifton St.). Again, all are welcome to attend! It is also $4 to attend but children
under 12 are free.
Rooms 101 and 103 have been learning about the Orchestra in their music classes, as well as
listening to and learning about different types of music that our Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will
be playing at their annual Musical Discovery concert at the Concert Hall. We will be attending the
concert on Monday, February 11 at 10:30 a.m. We are all very excited for this! Permission letters
will be sent home shortly.
