Associated Women’s Care Physicians, P.C. MEDICATION LIST DURING PREGNANCY It is always best to avoid taking any medication during pregnancy. Medication that is prescribed should be taken on a risk versus benefit ratio. This means that the benefit of the drug should clearly outweigh any potential risk to your baby. The following list includes medications you may take without calling our office if you are greater than 13 weeks pregnant. PROBLEM Headache, Pain Relief, Fever TRY FIRST Cold, dark place; neck massage MEDICATIONS Acetaminophen-Tylenol Heartburn/Indigestion Gas/Upset stomach Avoid spicy, greasy, or fatty foods. Eat smaller and more frequent meals; remain upright for an hour after eating. Get plenty of rest; drink lots of fluids; try cold mist vaporizer; try nasal saline spray (Ocean Mist) Mylanta, Tums, Maalox, Gas-X, Zantac, Pepcid AC, Prilosec, Rolaids Colds, Nasal Congestion, Cough, Allergies Constipation Increase fluids, high fiber foods (fruits, juice and bran) and exercise (if okay with your Doctor) Diarrhea Stick with a clear liquid diet for 24 hours Hemorrhoids Chilled Witch Hazel Pads (Tucks); sitz baths Take a luke-warm bath; warm milk Insomnia Vaginal Yeast Infection Skin Itching Lice Leg Cramps All linens should be washed in hot water; personal hygiene products such as combs & brushes should be disinfected Stretch and massage calves before bed; bananas, oranges and orange juice Robitussin plain or DM; Sucrets; Chloraseptic spray or lozenges; Sudafed; Afrin (2-3 days only); Mucinex; Chlortimeton; Dimetapp; Benadryl; Tylenol Allergy; Claritin; Zyrtec; Alavert Colace; Milk of Magnesia; Senokot, Dulcolax, Metamucil, Fiber-All, Citrucel; Surfak, Pericolace; Miralax Immodium AD; Kaopectate PRECAUTIONS Avoid aspirin, motrin, and ibuprofen. Call Doctor if severe and/or persistent Avoid Pepto-Bismol Make sure lozenges are alcohol-free; Avoid Allegra. Call Doctor if fever is > 101 degrees, severe persistent sore throat or cough Avoid mineral oil, enema, magnesium citrate or castor oil Call Doctor if persists longer than 24 hours and/or fever Preparation H, Anusol Unisom Sleep Tab; Tylenol PM Monistat, Gyne-Lotrimin Benadryl; Topical Caladryl lotion; Aveeno Bath Salts Notify Doctor if rash is present or does not improve after 48 hours Nix Cream Rinse; Acticin; Elimite Oscal; Citracal Nausea/Vomiting before and after 13 weeks of pregnancy: You should try to eat frequent, small meals (3-6 per day). Drink liquids between meals instead of with foods. Avoid foods with strong odors and those that are fatty, fried, or spicy. Before getting up in the morning, eat a few crackers and a handful of dry cereal or piece of dry toast. Before going to sleep at night, eat a light snack that includes both carbs and protein. At night, you can also have Emetrol or Unisom (1/2 tab) with 50 mg of Vitamin B6 and you may repeat 1/2 tab of Unisom with 50 mg of Vitamin B6 in the morning and again at 4pm if needed. C-Bands/Relief Bands wrist bands may also be helpful. Ginger capsules 340 mg three times per day may also aid with nausea and vomiting.
