PROGRAMDESCRIPTION:TheWritingWalk-InService(WWIS),CornellUniversity’swritingcenter,operateswithinacomplex
writing-in-the-disciplinesprogramwhichservesstudentsfromallsevenofCornell’scolleges,rangingfromAgricultureandLife
Sciences,toIndustrialandlaborRelations,toArtsandSciences.ThestudentswhovisittheWWISareundergraduateand
graduatestudentwriters;theyarestudentswithbothconsistentlystrongandunevenlydevelopedacademicpreparation;they
aredomesticandinternationalstudents;theyareconfidentandfragilestudentsandwriters.Therangeofstudentabilitiesand
interestsrepresentedonanygivendayattheWritingWalk-InService,consequently,isquitebroad.
JOBDESCRIPTION:Ourundergraduateandgraduatewritingtutorprovidesupportforthisdiversepoolofwritersatvarious
stagesofthedraftingprocessfornearlyanykindofwritingproject.Weoperateoutoffivecampuslocationstoofferthirty-to
sixty-minuteindividualmeetings.Duringtutorials,writingtutorstypically:helpwritersgetstartedwithessaysbyreadingand
discussingawritingassignment,evaluatingresearchmaterial,orbrainstorminganoutline;discusswaystoshapecoherent
arguments,makestronguseofevidence,andworkwithappropriatecitationconventions;considerquestionsaboutdepthof
analysis,organization,thesisdefinition,audienceexpectations,paragraphdevelopment,stylistics,orsentencestructure;
supportbothnativeandnon-nativespeakersofEnglishtoidentifypatternsamongerrorsingrammarorusageandtodevelop
effectivestrategiesfortheirownline-editing.Inshort,writingtutorsserveasresponsivelistenersandreaderswhocanaddress
questionsaboutthewritingprocessoraboutparticularpiecesofwriting.Theymightalsoaddressissuesofconfidence,critical
reading,analyticthought,andimagination.
Writingtutorstypicallyworkbetweenfiveandtenhoursperweekandarerequiredtoattendtwostaffmeetingspermonth.
Undergraduatestudentsmustcompleteaone-semestertrainingprogram(4-5hoursperweek,paid)beforetheyareeligiblefor
fullemployment.
