month’s Sanctuary Star.
April was born and raised in
Ann Arbor, MI. She comes from
a large family, with 14 paternal
siblings and two maternal

that April holds very close to
heart, she has raised her sister
Aaliyah from the age of six months to the age of 11.
April attended Huron high school and following her
graduation she began studying at Eastern Michigan.
April would like to pursue the Nursing program that
EMU offers, her goal following the graduation from the
program is to work in the hospital in the Neonatal

spend time with her friends and her three pets. She has
two pit bulls, Caesar and Toot, and she has a cat named
Misty. April also loves to dance, sing, and travel. One
vacation spot she is very interested in visiting is
Nicaragua.
In ten years from now, April sees herself married

know a therapist, thank
him or her for all they do
to help others.
• Straw Hat Month. Top your
noggin with a jaunty boater
or sun hat.
• Stress Awareness Month.
Don’t let stress affect your
health. Meditate or exercise
to help you relax.
Tips From Tami
3 Things You Need
to Know
Gardening Is Good
for You
Growing older doesn’t mean
your gardening days are gone
forever. In fact, research shows
that gardening provides a
bounty of benefits for seniors.
Peaceful planting. Gardening
can be both relaxing and
therapeutic. Tending a garden
involves various tasks that keep
the mind sharp, and the fresh air
improves focus and
concentration. Being outdoors
also reduces stress, irritability
and depression, which in turn
leads to more restful sleep.
Seeds of strength. Digging in
the dirt, lifting a watering can
and pulling weeds all help build
motor skills, strengthen muscles
and improve joint flexibility.
Additionally, a University of
Arkansas study found the
weight-bearing movements
associated with gardening
increased bone density and
reduced the risk of osteoporosis.
A happy harvest. By nurturing
and caring for another living
thing, gardening provides a
sense of purpose and
accomplishment. There’s
nothing like seeing the fruits of
your labor in the form of
beautiful blossoms or fresh,
tasty fruits and vegetables.
Here are a few tips from
Prevention.com that may help
you avoid the occasional
headache:
1. Stay away from foods that
are smoked, pickled, dried or
aged. They may contain sulfites,
which dilate blood vessels and
can cause headaches.
2. Let down your hair. Over
half of women get tension
headaches from a hairdo that
pulls at their scalp, such as a
bun or tight ponytail.
3. Wear sunglasses with
UVA/UVB protection. Sunshine
can affect the brain’s thalamus,
sending pain signals to your
body.

A Dose of Fun With Ann
April is my favorite time of
year, when we can go outside
and enjoy the blooming flowers
and nature around us! I have
some fun outings and activities
scheduled for us to get into the
spring spirit!
We will have several church
services offered for all religions,
Also on Easter Sunday, Chaplain
Marianne Danks will lead a
Protestant service, and Father
Tim will lead the Easter Mass.
We will have a meeting for
our “Sanctuary Horticulture
Club” on Tuesday, April 22nd,
at 3:30pm. For this club we will
be discussing how we will
design/plant in the areas around
the building.
Sales With Jaci

2:00pm, we will be having a
speaker from The American
Association of Wartime Veterans

Actors’ Birthday
Spencer Tracy, Bette Davis
and Gregory Peck all share a
birthday. They each were born
on April 5, but in different years.

Wild World:
Tree Squirrel
One of the most visible
wild animals in North
America is the tree
squirrel. There are more
than 200 squirrel species,
ranging in size from the
5-inch-long African pygmy
squirrel to the 3-foot-long
Indian giant squirrel. Tree
squirrels are often seen
scampering through cities,
suburbs and woodlands.
They construct large nests
of twigs and leaves,
usually at least 20 feet up
in a tree. They also make
dens in hollow tree trunks.
Tree squirrels eat nuts,
acorns, berries, flowers,
bark and bird eggs. Some
species are fond of
tree sap.
Bone Up on Body
Knowledge
Did you know that
babies have nearly 100
more bones than adults?
Infants are born with
about 300 bones in their
body, but as they grow,
some of these bones fuse
together to make single,
larger bones. By
adulthood, the average
human has 206 bones.

Wake Up and Work Out
We all know that regular
exercise is a key part of looking
and feeling our best. And while
exercise at any time of the day is
beneficial, more and more
research indicates that morning
workouts are best.
For starters, it’s important to
make exercise a part of your
daily routine, and a great way to
do that is to complete your
workout before everyday
distractions throw you off track.
Morning exercisers also get a
brain boost for the day. Exercise
is proven to increase alertness
and mental focus, and these
results last up to 10 hours.
Those whose primary exercise
goal is to lose or maintain
weight can benefit from
jump-starting their metabolism
each morning, which helps burn
calories more efficiently all day
long. Plus, additional research
has shown that morning
exercisers have fewer food
cravings throughout the day.
Working out in the morning
can improve your mood. When
we exercise, the body releases
endorphins, hormones that
create a “feel-good” sensation.
Like the boost of mental
stimulation, the positive effects
of endorphins can last for hours
after you’ve finished exercising.
Morning exercisers also report
better sleep because they do not
have to wind down from the
“energy buzz” created by
evening workouts.
A Popular Pony
Whatever it takes to become
an icon, the Ford Mustang has it
in abundance. The popular
sports car has been admired for
half a century now.
Debuting on April 17,
1964, the first Mustang was
technically a 1965 model,
but is considered by enthusiasts
to be a “1964 1/2” due to its
arrival on the market several
Details From Dan
Hello all, spring is here, I
hope! At least I don’t foresee us
getting any more snow. The
landscapers will be here this
month to do our annual spring
cleaning. They focus on the
grounds around the building
and will be getting ready for
mowing and flowers.
We have had several requests
to improve the lighting in the
meditation room. We are
pleased to announce that we
have added dimmable ceiling
lights in the chapel.
That is all for now. Meet me

Date to be announced.
months before the 1965
production year.
From the beginning, the car
has been a hit. More than half a
million Mustangs were sold
during the first year alone,
shattering the sales numbers
forecast by Ford.
Some attribute the car’s early
success to the fact that it was
affordable compared to other
sports cars, and with many
options available, buyers could
customize the car to meet their
own needs and budgets. Another
selling point was the car’s classic
style; the ’65 Mustang was the
first car ever to win the Tiffany
Award for Excellence in
American Design.
Jokes and Hoaxes and
Pranks, Oh My!
While its origins are not
entirely clear, April 1,
commonly known as April
Fools’ Day, has been a date for
playing pranks for centuries,
sometimes on a large scale. For
example, in 2000, a news release
was issued announcing the 15th
Annual New York City April
Fools’ Day Parade. Besides
throngs of spectators, two major
news affiliates showed up to
cover the phony event. To read
about other classic capers, visit
the April Fool Archive at
www.MuseumOfHoaxes.com.

Nutrient of the Month:
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is the name given
to a group of vitamins of similar
composition. These vitamins
play an important role in
promoting healthy blood
clotting, maintaining bone
strength, and preventing
calcification of blood vessels
and heart valves. Most people
get enough vitamin K from their
diets. Vitamin K1 is obtained
from leafy greens and some
other fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin K2 is a group of
compounds largely obtained
from meat, cheese and eggs.
What Are You Afraid Of?
This Land Is Your Land
Phobias are generally thought
of as irrational or exaggerated
fears, although many seem
understandable—such as the
fear of heights or the fear of
spiders. But there are many
more that are almost
unbelievable. Check out this
unusual list:
Omphalophobia. Fear of
bellybuttons.
Pogonophobia. Fear of beards.
Pteronophobia. Fear of being
tickled by feathers.
Arachibutyrophobia. Fear of
peanut butter sticking to the
roof of your mouth.
Xanthophobia. Fear of the
color yellow.
Pentheraphobia. Fear of one’s
mother-in-law.
Turophobia. Fear of cheese.
Papyrophobia. Fear of paper.
Ombrophobia. Fear of rain.
Nomophobia. Fear of being
without mobile phone coverage.
Lachanophobia. Fear of
vegetables.
Metrophobia. Fear of poetry.
Geliophobia. Fear of laughter.
Chiclephobia. Fear of
chewing gum.
Deipnophobia. Fear of dinner
conversations.
Phobophobia. Fear of
developing a phobia!
Natural beauty abounds in
the more than 400 national
park system areas that cover
84 million acres of America
and its territories. From the
majestic waterfalls of Yosemite
to the mysterious swamps of the
Everglades, millions of visitors
flock to national parks each
year to explore and bask in
their splendor.
The national park system is
present in all 50 states, as well as
American Samoa, Guam, Puerto
Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Described by writer and
historian Wallace Stegner as
“the best idea we ever had,”
America established its first
national park, Yellowstone, in
1872 as a way to conserve and
protect the area and its natural
resources. Other sites followed,
including the addition of five
national parks during the
presidency of conservationist
Theodore Roosevelt.
By 1916, the National Park
Service was created by Congress
under President Woodrow
Wilson to manage and oversee
the growing number of these
national land treasures. Today,
the National Park Service
consists of nearly
22,000 employees, plus more
than 200,000 volunteers.
As of 2010, the most-visited
national park is Great Smoky
Mountains in North Carolina
and Tennessee, with about
9.4 million visitors annually.
Deb’s Corner
Surely, by now we are seeing the promise of spring and
summer. As I write this article in early March, it just doesn’t
feel like this winter will ever go away. Hoping we are soon
rejoicing in the promise of spring.
Renovation updates: As of today (March 5), there is no
concrete start date. I am really hoping that by the time this
newsletter is published, we have more information. The
plans include a small sundry shop for your convenience, so
please let me know if there is anything you would like to
see stocked! Several residents have volunteered to staff the
store, so if that is something that interests you, come join
us!
Resident Council: I am very glad to see that a resident
council has been formed. The members of that are your
voice. Thank you to those who offered to serve.
Science has never drummed up quite as effective a
tranquilizing agent as a sunny spring day. ~W. Earl Hall
