The Adams State University’s Computing Services Department is currently seeking applicants for a
Systems Administrator. This is a full-time exempt staff position that reports to the Manager of Systems
Administration.
Summary of the position:
The Systems Administration Team in the Computing Services Department supports the numerous
systems which comprise the server infrastructure at Adams State University. The server infrastructure
runs a variety of technologies such as Linux, VMWare and Windows for Operating Systems, and
numerous server applications such as Apache, Nginx, Tomcat, Oracle, MediaWiki, WordPress, IIS,
MySQL, Postgresql and MSSQL.
This systems administrator position is responsible for the installation, configuration, security patching
and overall systems administration support for various server operating systems and server applications
on campus.

Major job responsibilities of the position:
 Perform installation, configuration, security patching and overall systems administration support
for various Operating Systems in use, including Linux, VMware, and Windows.
 Provide installation or configuration support for numerous server applications such as Apache,
Nginx, Tomcat, Oracle, MediaWiki, WordPress, IIS, MySQL, Postgresql, MSSQL.
 Assist in configuration, installation, management, maintenance, procurement
recommendations, licensing, and support for all campus servers and storage devices.
 Assist in management of power distribution, backup, system storage, network connectivity,
performance and status monitoring, network and host firewalls and security for all systems.
 Assist with business continuity, disaster recovery, system backups, failed hardware
replacements, submission of tickets to vendors (hardware/software) related tasks for all
systems.
 Actively participate as a member of the Systems Administration team by attending team
meetings and discussions and involvement in projects such as account management and server
configuration management.
 Support diverse and dynamic system needs of other technical teams within the department
 Independent research and ongoing maintenance of technical knowledge is required. Examples
include conducting product trade studies and peer reviews, research of additional programming
languages, attendance and presentation at symposia and conferences, identification and
attendance of relevant training.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in MIS, CIS, CSCI or related field. Work experience may be used as a substitute
for a Bachelor’s degree at the rate of 2 years work experience = 1 year of Higher Education, (8
years of professional work experience)
• Minimum of 1 years professional work experience in an IT field with demonstrated professional
and technical responsibility
• Demonstrated, on-the job working experience with server systems hardware, software, and
related technologies
• Experience in managing Linux or Windows servers
• Knowledge of IP networking fundamentals
• Demonstrated technical abilities and teamwork skills in a systems administration team
environment
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work with diverse campus
constituencies

Knowledge of information security best practices
Knowledge of or experience with shared storage systems

SCCM
Experience with one or more scripting languages for systems automation such as Perl, Python,
Bash, Ruby, or Powershell
Experience with various server application configurations such as Apache, Oracle, Tomcat, PHP,
Nginx
Experience with monitoring technologies such as Nagios, Icinga, or WhatsUpGold
Experience with cloud technologies such as Google Apps
Knowledge of current trends, ideas and resources in the systems administration area of Higher
Education
