• You don’t always have to have a dictionary to
learn the meanings of new words in your reading.
You can often use context to figure out the
meaning of a word.
• Context are the words and sentences surrounding
the unknown word.
• Textbooks tell you a word’s meaning; they italicize
or bold terms and give definitions and examples
of those terms.
• 4 major types of context clues
