WHAT IS A TWO-STEP EQUATION?
• In class we have been solving equations
using one inverse operation to get the
variable alone.
• With a two-step equation, you need to
complete TWO inverse operations to get
the variable alone!
WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?
1. Eliminate anything that is not
attached to the variable.
+5 is not attached to the variable –
it’s by itself in the equation. Do -5 on
both sides to get 2x by itself.
Yes, it’s in the opposite order of the
Order of Operations!
2. Get the variable alone.
 x is being multiplied by 2 so divide
both sides by 2!
3. Solve. x = 5
2x + 5 = 15
-5
2x
-5
= 10
x = 5
TRY THESE:
3x - 2 = 16
+2
3x
8x - 8 = 56
+2
= 18
+8 +8
8x
= 64
3
8
x = 6
x = 8
nnnn+6 +6

=
x
6*5
= 30
THE STEPS IN A FLOW CHART:
HOMEWORK
• Use the steps in the flowchart to
complete the problems around it. Be
sure to show your work!
• I hope this gives you a good start for
solving Two-Step Equations!
• Tomorrow we will do an activity in class
to help you visualize the solving process.
