WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE? 1. Eliminate anything that is not attached to the variable. +5 is not attached to the variable – it’s by itself in the equation. Do -5 on both sides to get 2x by itself. Yes, it’s in the opposite order of the Order of Operations! 2. Get the variable alone. x is being multiplied by 2 so divide both sides by 2! 3. Solve. x = 5 2x + 5 = 15 -5 2x -5 = 10 x = 5 TRY THESE: 3x - 2 = 16 +2 3x 8x - 8 = 56 +2 = 18 +8 +8 8x = 64 3 8 x = 6 x = 8 nnnn+6 +6 5* = x 6*5 = 30 THE STEPS IN A FLOW CHART: HOMEWORK • Use the steps in the flowchart to complete the problems around it.
