The city of Anderson is named for Chief
William Anderson, whose mother was a
Delaware Indian and whose father was of
Swedish descent. Chief Anderson's Indian
name was Kithawenund meaning "making
a noise" or "causing to crack" and is
spelled in a variety of ways.
The settlers coming into Anderson referred to the village as "Anderson Town."
Later it was known as "Andersontown."
In 1844 the name was shortened by the
Indiana legislature to "Anderson."
BICYCLE FOR THE HEALTH OF IT!
Obesity is at epidemic proportions. Twentypercent of Hoosier children are obese ranking
Indiana’s youths as second-tubbiest in the nation. Bicycling is a family activity that is entertaining, low-impact and a great way to get into
shape. Think you aren’t fit enough to ride?
Think again. If you can walk one-mile, you can
easily pedal five. This means if you walk the
trail at Shadyside Park (2.65 miles) you may
easily bike 13 miles without even breaking a
heavy sweat!!!!!
The Moravians operated a Native American mission along the White River on
property now known as the Rangeline
Nature Preserve from 1801–1866.
The Lenape (pronounced
law naw pay) bicycle route is
approximately 18 miles. The
word Lenape is an Indian
word
that
means
“Delaware” or “First People.” Lenape was also the
language of the Delaware Indians that settled in Anderson.

Ever think about commuting to work? Think
about this—bicycling burns calories. An average 150-pound person will burn about 500
calories riding at a leisurely pace for 30 minutes going to work and 30 minutes coming
home. How great is that—you could lose 5
to 10 lbs without dieting or trying!
