Sauvignon Blanc is a real star and almost always instantly recognisable due
to its aromatic character. In France, the Loire Valley produces crisp, fresh
Sauvignon Blanc wines with a certain minerality to them. Meanwhile, on the

Winemakers the world over often describe the Chardonnay grape as
‘malleable’, which is a spot-on description. They love working with this
grape as it can take on so many forms depending on where it is grown and
what the winemaker does with it once it is picked. Chardonnay thrives in both
cool and warm climates and is good for sparkling as well as still wines.

Often described as a nightmare to grow – due to its thin skin and sensitivity

powerful New World wines made from Pinot Noir have been turning heads.

This grape is fabulously fleshy in a good way, that is to say there are lots of
fruit and soft tannins in wine made from this grape making it brilliant for
blends, particularly when matched with the harder-edged Cabernet grape.
New World Merlot tends to make wines with ripe, plummy fruit compared with
their French counterparts, which often have a more earthy, herbal character.

They’ve been making wine in southern France since Roman
times. Véronique Torcolacci, head winemaker for La Châsse,
tells us why this region is still producing top-class wines today
Ithink it is important
to never make the sli htest
compromise on quality
to a chest used to store the treasures of the
14th-century avignon popes who lived near the
river rhône). “From the start, my goal has been
to maintain the quality and consistency of the
range. I think people now recognise La Châsse as
having an elegant style at an affordable price.”
So what is it that makes La Châsse wines so
distinctive? the classic grape varieties used are
grown in France’s rhône Valley and Languedoc
regions, where the landscapes, climates and soils
allow Véronique to produce a wide range of wines
of great complexity and character. “We have

strong mistral [wind] in the southern rhône that
is suited to growing noble red varietals, vibrantly
fruity rosés and fresh, dry whites,” she explains.
Quality counts
Véronique is a very hands-on oenologist, leading
a team of winemakers and growers equally
devoted to the job. She spends much of the
year in the vineyards, overseeing every step from
the grape-growing process to bottling – during
harvest, she can cover up to 2,000km a week!
the wellbeing of the vineyards is also
important to her, and her approach combines
a drive for improvement in quality with a deep
respect for the environment and sustainability.
“Passion and commitment are my two driving
forces,” she says. “I think it is important to never
make the slightest compromise on quality. From
our most prestigious vintages to the ranges that
sell millions of bottles around the world, the
importance attached to the quality is the same.”
Medal-winning wines
She believes this emphasis on quality has been
key to the success of La Châsse, which has won
more than 100 medals and several 4 and 5-star
ratings. and it’s their old World style that makes
these wines perfect for sophisticated entertaining.
as Véronique says: “the relationship between
wine and food is closer in France than anywhere
and I like La Châsse to reflect that. after all, they
are quintessentially French wines and represent
everything good about the land and culture.”

This elegant Amarone by Gaetane Carron
has been made in the traditional Italian way,
using partially dried grapes. The process
concentrates the sugars and flavours of
the grapes to create a dry and luxuriously
complex wine with intense tastes of damson
fruit seasoned with spicy French oak. Would
go wonderfully with a rich lasagne. Zironda

made by the same family for eight generations.
From the 2006 vintage, this magnificent claret,

Award-winning winery HA Barceló have the ideal
conditions for growing Tempranillo in their
high-altitude vineyards in Rioja. This luxuriously
silky-smooth red matches enticing aromas of
cherries and spice with rich, opulent flavours of
blackberries and a hint of chocolate. A year’s
barrel ageing, followed by several years in bottle,
creates the subtle notes of cedar and vanilla of a
classic Rioja Reserva. Fabulous with cheese.

The main grape variety used in the red wines of
Madiran, a region lying in the shadows of the
Pyrenees in southwest France, is a lesser-known
grape variety called Tannat. Madiran benefits
greatly from ageing, as the rich, powerful
flavours of black fruit and spice in this perfectly
mature 15-year-old wine, from the excellent
1996 vintage, deliciously demonstrate.
