hen Jan and David Rideout built their
Ocean Springs home in 2008, they
wanted the exterior color to be the
same as their home that Hurricane
Katrina destroyed. There’s no missing
the brightly hued color; it’s called ardent coral. However,
all similarities stop there. The new home has a 20-foot
elevation on wooden pilings. It’s a prefabricated octagonal
home from Pre Fab Topsider, a North Carolina company
that specializes in octagon-shaped homes. There is an
elevator for anyone not wanting to climb the outside steps.
The home is two 800-square-foot octagons connected by
a 400-square-foot, stick-built center. The two octagons are
post and beam construction with large exposed beams
— painted white — that add a sculptural element to the
contemporary interior. “This type of house was quicker to
build, and we like the octagon concept,” Jan Rideout said.
“The shape and open layout give us lots of windows, which
we wanted for the view, and it’s a very functional layout.” >>

THE UNIQUE SHAPE, open
layout and balconies give
the Rideouts lots of beautiful
vantage points that look over
the Back Bay of Biloxi.

There are many enchanting views of water in South Mississippi and
none is better than the one the Rideouts can see through their expansive
windows across the back of the house. The elevated home overlooks
a bayou, the Back Bay of Biloxi and casinos across the way. There are
marsh areas with gently blowing grasses and birds of every description.
It’s a relaxing scene that David’s mother, Marie Rideout, who’s visiting
from New Jersey for the winter, says is “like looking at a picture all the
time.”
Jan Rideout says there are also two alligators,
Junior and Big Daddy, who live in the marsh.
The home’s tasteful landscaping and paving
tiles go to the water ’s edge and includes
a gazebo, swimming pool and boat house.
The absence of window coverings keeps the
panoramic view visible at all times.
The home’s interior colors are soft and
calming in shades of blue, green and aqua
that Rideout says are water colors. The restful
colors, along with the clean lines and absence
of clutter, give the home a peaceful atmosphere.
There are, however, splashes of brightness in
the pieces of original art chosen specifically
for this waterside home. Pieces of art glass are
perfect accessories. “We have consistency and I
like that,” Rideout said.
“We like contemporary décor and the
openness of this layout,” she added. “The
kitchen was a little challenging because of the
shape and because we wanted the island to face
the view.” She says the glass countertops and
tile and the white laminate cabinets are easy to
keep clean.
The living room occupies the center area that
joins the two octagons. Functional posts are
covered with stainless steel to add another
contemporary component to the décor. A large
white sofa faces the windows and marblesurrounded fireplace. Bamboo flooring is used
throughout the home.
A bedroom and bathroom are located on each
end of the two octagons. There is also a half
bath off the foyer and a large office/exercise
room behind the living room.
The Rideouts moved to Ocean Springs in 2001 to work for Northrop
Grumman. Jan retired and now owns a ladies shoe shop in downtown
Ocean Springs, which she is loving. David is a systems engineer for
Ingalls Shipbuilding.
