Set within 300 acres of parkland, the Canterbury campus offers: • over 4,600 bedrooms for single occupancy • en-suite facilities in over 50% of bedrooms • 86% of bedrooms with self-catering facilities • high-speed wired and Wi-Fi internet connection throughout the accommodation • all utility costs and personal contents room insurance are included in the accommodation fees. Kent has four accommodation options for undergraduate students. Self-catered accommodation On central campus, Turing and Keynes offer en-suite bedrooms in flats and rooms in houses with shared bathroom facilities. Tyler Court offers flats with en-suite bedrooms, and houses with shared bathroom facilities are available at Darwin College. Our student village, Park Wood, also offers en-suite bedrooms in flats and more than 260 five or six-bedroom houses with shared bathroom facilities. Park Wood is located in a beautiful woodland setting and is just a few minutes’ walk from central campus. Self-catered flats and houses all have shared kitchens. Part-catered accommodation – bed and bistro This accommodation package is available to residents of the main building at Keynes College and at Becket Court. The package includes an en-suite bedroom, weekday breakfasts and dinners in our flagship bistro Dolche Vita, located in Keynes College, and weekend meals in the dining hall at Rutherford College, during term time. This accommodation is offered for a fixed period from September to June, excluding the winter and spring vacations. Part-catered accommodation – bed and breakfast This type of accommodation is only offered in Rutherford College. Accommodation costs include breakfast or an allowance towards an evening meal during term time. Other meals may be bought from a wide variety of catering outlets on campus. The colleges at Kent have their own distinctive character and offer a welcoming and diverse community where it’s easy to make new friends with students from around the world. Our newest college, Turing, offers self-catered accommodation in flats with en-suite bedrooms or houses with shared bathroom facilities. Darwin College offers self-catered accommodation. Rooms have shared bathroom facilities and access to large, shared kitchens. Eliot and Rutherford Colleges offer part-catered accommodation. Rooms are arranged in corridors, with shared toilet and shower/bath facilities. Corridors include a small kitchenette with a fridge, kettle and microwave, for the preparation of hot drinks and light snacks only. Rutherford College offers bed and breakfast accommodation with breakfast available each day, during term time. On days where breakfast is not eaten, the breakfast allowance may be used towards an evening meal instead. Eliot College offers our new bed and flex dining scheme, which provides catering options on an inclusive allowance across campus seven days a week, during term time, see p3 for details. Keynes College and Becket Court offer accommodation on a bed and Turing and Darwin Colleges 39 weeks, including winter and spring vacations Eliot and Rutherford Colleges 37 weeks, including winter and spring vacations (except the University’s two-week closure for Christmas and New Year) Keynes College and Becket Court 31 weeks, excluding winter and spring vacations. In the winter vacation, you can leave your belongings in your room but during the spring vacation you need to vacate your room and remove all your belongings. bistro basis. Woolf College provides on-campus accommodation for postgraduate students in a diverse community with more than 60 nationalities represented. It has a lecture theatre and seminar rooms so you live and study in a thriving community. Each of the 544 single occupancy bedrooms has its own shower, washbasin and toilet and every room is networked to the University’s main computer system. The accommodation comprises flats with six or eight students sharing a large, fully equipped kitchen. There are also some self-contained studio rooms with their own cooking facilities. Woolf College has its own launderette. Only full-time postgraduate students on a 12-month programme of study starting in September are eligible for accommodation at Woolf College. You should apply online by 31 July 2016 to qualify for an offer of accommodation, subject to eligibility. After this date you will be offered accommodation subject to availability. Postgraduates on short-term exchange or diploma programmes, whose academic registration is for less than 12 months or whose programme begins other than in September, should contact the Accommodation Office T: +44 (0)1227 766660 or email [email protected] The University has only a few rooms suitable for couples but we regret that there is no accommodation suitable for students with children. Students who need this type of accommodation, or more choice, should consider renting from private sector landlords. Off-campus accommodation If you prefer to live in private rented accommodation, you should only lease property that meets the management and safety standards of a private rented sector housing accreditation scheme. You can arrange additional cover online via the insurer’s website for accidental damage or all risks on high-value items such as mobile phones and laptops. There is a wide variety of outlets on campus that cater for most tastes, including national cuisines and vegetarian options. You can buy food at the campus mini-market and Park Wood shop or at snack and drinks machines across campus. If you are in self-catering accommodation, you can buy provisions from one of the main supermarkets in Canterbury. Car parking Parking on campus is restricted and our green transport strategy encourages students not to bring cars on to the campus. If you live on campus you may not bring your car to the University. The only exception is for students with severe disabilities. Students who live off campus, outside designated postcode areas of Canterbury city centre, can apply for a parking permit from the Estates Department after arriving at Kent. Other facilities on campus Computer connection All bedrooms on the Canterbury campus are connected to the University computer network system, which includes a highspeed 24-hour wired and Wi-Fi connection to the internet and access to email, newsgroups and library CD-Roms. It can also be used in Kent Union shops on the Canterbury campus. Laundry There are self-service launderettes in all residential areas across campus, with coin and cardoperated washers and driers. Costs are £2.60 per wash cycle and £1.20 per dry cycle. Real Meal Deal scheme The Real Meal Deal scheme is open to anyone from any year, living on or off campus, and offers the chance to save up to 40% on your annual weekday meal costs. Televisions KentOne card Bedding and bed linen When you first arrive at Kent, you are given a student ID/cashless card. As well as being your photo ID, this can also be used as a debit card to buy food and drink in Kent Hospitality outlets and the You need to supply your own bedding, bed linen and towels if you are in campus accommodation. Canterbury city centre with its world-famous Cathedral, part of a World Heritage Site, and a lively mix of bars, restaurants and shops, is only a 25-minute walk or a short bus-ride from the campus. www.kent.ac.uk/accommodation 13 OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION AT CANTERBURY Accredited housing Canterbury has an accreditation scheme for student housing, which is designed to recognise landlords who are concerned for the health, safety and welfare of their student tenants. These landlords have agreed to follow a Code of Conduct to ensure fair, efficient management of their properties, to confirm that they are of a high standard and that they meet all legal obligations. All students are advised to rent only from landlords who are members of this scheme. For more details see www.homestamp.kent.co.uk New students If you decide to live off campus in your first year of study, it would be best to arrange a short stay in a guest house or hotel prior to arrival in Canterbury. This will enable you to personally look at the various types of off-campus accommodation available and make the choice that most closely matches your budget and other requirements. It is not advisable to agree to rent or make payment for any private accommodation unseen. Second to final-year students Second to final-year students are expected to join with friends to rent houses or flats off campus in Canterbury or the surrounding area. Canterbury is a welcoming and student-friendly city, just a 25-minute walk or 10-minute bus-ride from the campus. Much of its medieval history is evident in its ancient streets and buildings. The city centre has a cosmopolitan atmosphere, as befits Britain’s closest city to continental Europe. The 2015/16 rental levels for a single room in a shared self-catered house off campus range from £85 to £100 a week, excluding utility bills. Most private landlords require students to commit to housing agreements that cover 52 weeks. The Accommodation Office website contains a downloadable housing guide and links to maps, plus useful information about renting properties in the local area. Kent and Canterbury The county of Kent is known as the ‘Garden of England’ and offers you an opportunity to live and study in one of the most picturesque areas of the country. The nearest seaside town to Canterbury is Whitstable, offering water sports including windsurfing, yachting and waterskiing. The coastal towns of Herne Bay, Ramsgate, Margate, Deal and Broadstairs are also close by. Transport links London is just under an hour away by high-speed train and there is a frequent coach service to London and beyond. You can be in Paris or Brussels in around two hours by train from the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone or the Eurostar terminal at Ashford and cross-channel ferries sail daily from Dover to Calais and Dunkirk. 14 University of Kent / Accommodation at Kent 2016 UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE ACCOMMODATION AT MEDWAY All eligible undergraduate and postgraduate students studying at our Medway campus can live in modern, self-catered, en-suite accommodation at Liberty Quays. This is a partnership development between the University and Liberty Living and your accommodation offer will be sent to you by Liberty Living, not the University. You will be entering into a contract directly with Liberty Living and will therefore be bound by their payment terms and conditions. For details please see www.libertyliving.co.uk Liberty Quays Liberty Quays is part of a dynamic waterside village, Victory Pier, on the banks of the River Medway next to Gillingham Marina, site of our new bar and bistro, Cargo, which won the ‘Best Bar’ concept in the U Dine Awards 2015. It is just a ten-minute walk from the Medway campus, with its own Tesco Express, Subway and Domino’s Pizza outlets. All bedrooms have their own shower, washbasin and toilet. Typically, the flats house five to eight students, who share a fully equipped kitchen. The accommodation has its own social facilities and launderette, and each room has access to the University computer network and the internet. The city has excellent transport links, including buses, rail, metro and tram services. Brussels School of International Studies, the University of Kent’s Brussels centre, is located close to the student district between our partner universities, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Much of the housing is a short walk from the University and is designed for students in layout and price. Accommodation Location The centre is ideally located in the Athenian suburb of Eleusina, the birthplace of Aeschylus and one of the most important archaeological religious sites in the world as a location of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The centre of Athens is only 30km away, and as such you have close access to many other major historical sites including the Parthenon, Ancient Corinth, Nemea and Thebes. Although the University does not offer campus accommodation in Brussels, there is a wealth of affordable private rental options available and students usually find a place to live shortly after arrival. Studio apartments, with all charges (utility) included, cost approximately €550-700 a month and a one-bedroom apartment is approximately €650-850 a month. Kent students have full access to all the facilities on the VUB and ULB campuses, including libraries, public computers, bars, cafés and sports facilities. Local attractions Brussels is a diverse city, with architecture ranging from medieval rampart walls to the impressive modern architecture built to house several institutions of the European Union. Popular attractions in the city www.kent.ac.uk/accommodation 17 University of Kent, Paris Accommodation Students studying in Paris for a term or on a year-long MA programme are responsible for securing their own accommodation. Our Paris Centre staff can offer advice on how to get started. There are many options: you may prefer to rent a flat on your own or share with other students (organised independently or through an agency), live in student halls, or with host families if you wish to improve your French. include the Grand Place square with its Gothic and baroque architecture, the 15th-century Hôtel de Ville, and the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula. Brussels has over 80 museums and many beautiful parks and open spaces, including the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Transport links While Brussels is a relatively small city for a European capital and is easy to get around on foot, the public transport system is very good and makes it easy to travel quickly around the city. Buses, trams and metros run on a regular schedule and are generally very reliable. Etterbeek railway station is 50 metres from our Brussels centre and provides regular connections with Schuman, Brussels Nord and Brussels Midi stations. Tram lines 23, 24 and 90 also stop at Etterbeek and the University is a short walk, across the VUB Etterbeek campus, from the Pétillon metro station. Brussels has excellent transport links with other European cities. For instance, Paris is only two hours away by train. Ashford (near our Canterbury campus), Ebbsfleet (near our Medway campus) and London can be reached by the Eurostar service in under two hours. Brussels also has a major international airport. Reid Hall occupies traditional buildings grouped around two quiet and leafy inner courtyards. It was founded as a porcelain factory in the 18th century and has served as a centre for teaching and research since 1834. Kent postgraduates use facilities at Reid Hall alongside postgraduate students from Columbia University, Barnard College and Dartmouth College. The city’s metro system and an excellent city bus network mean you will be able to discover Paris easily and cheaply. Suburban train services, Réseau Express Régional (RER), connect you directly to the airports and other main train stations. Reid Hall is a five-minute walk from the metro stations Vavin and Raspail and close to the RER station Port-Royal, where you can take a direct train to the Gare du Nord. Transport links Further information Paris is served by three main airports: Charles de Gaulle, Orly and Beauvais-Tillé, offering international and domestic connections. Eurostar services to Lille, London, Ebbsfleet, near Medway, and Ashford, near Canterbury, depart from the Gare du Nord station in the centre of Paris and high-speed Thalys trains connect you to Brussels and other northern European cities. www.kent.ac.uk/paris Rome Accommodation The first term is spent in Canterbury. Most Rome students decide to live on campus to enjoy the experience and make full use of the facilities. If you wish to live on campus, you must apply for campus accommodation before 31 July 2016. The spring term is spent in Rome. You may prefer to organise your own privately rented accommodation in Rome before you arrive or, alternatively, The American University of Rome can arrange accommodation for you. To help you get a more authentic feel for the local culture and lifestyle, this is usually in apartments furnished in typical Italian style in the neighbourhoods surrounding the campus. Location The American University of Rome’s campus is in the picturesque Monteverde district, just a short bus ride to the historic centre of Rome. For Medway accommodation, the offer of a room will be sent to you by Liberty Living and you must accept your offer and make payment directly to Liberty Living: DID YOU KNOW? Deferred entry If you are accepted for deferred entry in September 2017, you do not need to complete a 2016 accommodation application. Other information for completing the online application Accommodation preferences Most corridors and houses are mixed male and female accommodation. If you would prefer to live in female or male-only accommodation, you should request this option on your online accommodation application form under ‘Other Accommodation Requests’. If you are applying for undergraduate accommodation on the Canterbury campus, you can request up to four preferences on your accommodation application, two of which can be en suite. While we cannot guarantee to meet preferences, priority will be given to students choosing Kent as their firm choice on a first-come first-served basis according to date of accommodation application. Early application is therefore advisable. Rooms for students with disabilities A number of rooms in Park Wood, Rutherford, Keynes and Turing Colleges, Tyler Court and Woolf College (Canterbury) and Liberty Quays (Medway) are available for wheelchair users or students with other disabilities. Please indicate any special requirements when you apply online, and make sure you inform the University’s Student Support and Wellbeing team of your requirements so that we can support you as far as possible.
