Highwayman leaflet - Grayshott Primary School

A Highwayman Came Riding…
We are learning about the history of
the Devil’s Punchbowl, and
considering how the route was
vulnerable to attacks from
highwaymen, like the character of the
poem…
How we are using the text…
We are researching the events that occurred at
Gibbet’s Hill, and whether it had an impact on
highwaymen attacks...
We are taking a trip to the Punchbowl
itself in order to discuss and analyse
the Geographical layout. We are
thinking about the atmosphere given
to us by the Punchbowl, and creating
artistic impressions as well as
descriptive writing.
We are analysing the language,
identifying the figurative examples
such as similes, metaphors,
alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia
and personification. We discuss what
effect that gives the reader, and
presenting the imagery through
artwork.
We are using the rhythm and rhyme
scheme, as well as the themes that
are presented to us to create our own
verse of The Highwayman. We have
considered the audience, purpose
and effect we will have upon our
readers…
We are using hot seating to interview
a character from The Highwayman,
and presenting the interview into the
form of a script for police evidence…
We will use the coding game,
‘Scratch’ to create a Highwayman
game, where we code the rider to
conquer different levels.
We will independently de-bug and
solve the challenges we come
across in group work.
We are creating a newspaper article
based on the events of the night of
the attack, using the interviews
within our script…
We are using the school grounds to create a
dramatic performance of The Highwayman…
