The quote "nothing to fear but fear itself" was stated by Franklin

The quote "nothing to fear but fear itself" was stated by Franklin Delano
Roosevelt in his first inaugural speech in 1932 (6). It was the time of the
Great Depression and FDR made this statement to calm the many fears
that the people of the United States were feeling. In To Kill A
Mockingbird, we can see both the effects of the Great Depression as
well as the hope that this quote gave. The description of the town gives a
good indication of the how the town was affected by the Depression,
“Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town…” (5). The
description of the town as a whole is run-down, unkempt and dull.
However, as FDR gave his inaugural speech, the narrator describes the
setting as, “… a time of great optimism” (6). The hope that FDR was
trying to give America had reached Maycomb county.
