HFMC Quadrant Portfolios™
HFM Columbus Asset Management Ltd provides a suite of model
investment portfolios, known as the HFMC Quadrant Portfolios™, which
it manages on a discretionary basis and which are designed to be simple
and easy for you to employ with your HFMC Private Client Adviser. Our
investment managers take care of the day to day management of your
Quadrant Portfolio(s) by making timely decisions in accordance with an
agreed mandate, meaning that you can delegate the stress and effort of
managing your wealth in today’s complex investment environment.
Process
Each Quadrant Portfolio employs a logical four stage investment
process consisting of:
1. Global sector and asset allocation
2. Fund and manager selection
3. Proactive portfolio monitoring and management
4. Investment Committee oversight
Underpinning this process is an extensive degree of research, analysis
and due diligence. This is overlaid with the wealth of practical, lengthy
experience of our Investment Team and Investment Committee.

An
Choice
The Quadrant Portfolios are actively managed, diversified, multi-asset
portfolios, each having a clearly defined risk/reward profile enabling you, in
conjunction with your HFM Columbus Private Client Adviser, to choose the
portfolio(s) most suited to your attitudes and objectives.
This can usually be best achieved by utilising our financial planning process,
HFMC Navigator™, in conjunction with your adviser to help ensure the
selection of the Quadrant Portfolio(s) most appropriate for you.
The Portfolio choices are set out in the Quadrant Portfolio Summary Sheets
and include Cautious, Conservative, Balanced, Growth, Aggressive, Income,
Total Return and Foreign Currency Portfolios.
Philosophy
In our view the most important determinant of investment returns is asset
allocation as this usually has the biggest impact on long term portfolio
investment performance. We will make a careful and informed choice for
each portfolio as to the optimum mix of Equities, Fixed Income, Property and
Cash. We will then select what we consider to be the ‘best of breed’ fund
managers within each asset class and geographical area. A fund is chosen
only after a rigorous due diligence process to identify its methodology,
philosophy and control of risk.
Each Quadrant Portfolio typically has around 15 to 20 funds normally
investing in straightforward, liquid, transparent FCA regulated collective
funds. Portfolio risk is managed by asset class diversification and control of
volatility. We consider that the true definition of risk is the potential for
permanent loss of capital.
Our job is to strip the emotion out of the investment process and instead
utilise a rational methodology, evaluating whether markets are over or undervalued and in consequence make the appropriate buy or sell decisions.
Quadrant Portfolios are constructed, managed and monitored on a daily
basis by our experienced in-house Investment Team. Our Investment
Committee provides formal oversight on a regular basis.

Why Choose Discretionary
Asset Management?
As a private investor, personally managing an investment portfolio to
achieve the best from your capital presents many challenges. Very few
people have the range of skills and professional contacts required to
deliver optimum results and the few that do may not have that most
elusive of all ingredients – time.
Markets can also move quickly. Having your assets managed on a
discretionary basis crucially means our managers can exercise their
judgement to make changes to each portfolio without prior reference to
you. In our regular reports we will advise you why any changes were made.
‘Anyone can hold the helm when
the sea is calm.’

Keeping You Informed
We will communicate with you regularly as follows:
Portfolio Reports
At the end of each quarter, you will receive a consolidated portfolio
report which includes:
● A comprehensive portfolio valuation and performance summary.
● Commentary about the general performance of markets during the
reporting period.
● Details of all disposals and acquisitions during the reporting period.
● Details of all cash transactions during the reporting period,
including fees charged.
● A factsheet detailing the performance of the portfolio that you are
invested in, providing details of all movements in this portfolio
during the reporting period together with the rationale behind
investment decisions.
You can also obtain up to date valuations at any time by calling, emailing
or writing to us. Alternatively, if you would prefer to keep track of your
investments online, we will provide you with a secure log-in so that you
can view your portfolio at any time.
Tax Reports
At the end of each tax year, if applicable, we will provide you with a
capital gains tax report showing capital gains or losses for all assets
disposed of during the tax year.
We will also send consolidated tax certificates listing all income received
during the tax year.
Both reports greatly simplify the preparation of your tax returns.
Commentary and Updates
Our quarterly Investment Strategy will provide you with an in-depth
commentary, setting out our views on both domestic and global markets
and asset classes in terms of where they are currently and our
expectations for them going forward, helping to keep you fully informed.

Acceptable Risk
Next Step
Our Quadrant Portfolios each carry a different degree of
risk in terms of both short term volatility and the potential
for capital loss and so it is essential that you, in
conjunction with your HFM Columbus Private Client
Adviser, select the Quadrant Portfolio(s) most suited to
your circumstances. Our objective is then to achieve
satisfactory, risk adjusted, long term returns for your
chosen portfolio(s). There is, however, no investment
that achieves guaranteed high levels of return on a risk
free basis and any investment other than cash will
involve accepting some risk of loss of capital. The
greater the potential for higher reward, the greater also
the potential for loss of capital.

Innovative Thinking • Traditional Values
2500 years ago, the mariner’s quadrant enabled seafaring
travellers to solve the complex problem of determining their
latitude at sea.
Astronomers used a version of the quadrant to show the
sun’s path through the signs of the zodiac.
A quadrant is also a quarter of a circle. HFM Columbus
takes a logical four stage approach to building a complete
360˚ global view of portfolio construction and management.
