PondProtect® Aquaculture Pond Treatment Ammunition Against Ammonia and Nitrite The Aquaculture Pond Environment The importance of a good pond environment for shrimp culture cannot be over-emphasized. Stress caused by poor environmental Managing the pond conditions negatively environment is a affects the growth, critical success factor feeding, disease for effective and profitable resistance and ultimately shrimp farming the yield of the shrimp. The pond environment is a complex web of inter-linking processes. Maintaining the balance of critical parameters is a fundamental requirement for successful shrimp culture. Two critical parameters are ammonia and nitrite. Ammonia Problem in Shrimp Aquaculture Ammonia and nitrite are generated in the aquaculture pond by the decomposition of organic matter like fecal waste of the shrimp, excess feed, dead plankton and other nitrogenous matter under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. High temperature, high pH values and absence of oxygen in the pond water also augment ammonia generation. Under healthy pond conditions, ammonia is converted to nitrite and finally harmless nitrate and nitrogen by the action of naturally-occurring bacteria in the pond system. However, these bacteria are slow-growing, Anaerobic pond bottom soil is indicative slow-acting and often out- of a pond with a serious ammonia spike. competed by other species. Hence, the process of nitrification is very slow and in the event of anaerobic conditions doesn’t reach completion causing ammonia and nitrite to build up in the pond. Ammonia build-ups create toxic conditions for shrimp: increase blood pH; reduce oxygen conductivity in the blood; reduce oxygen content of the blood, affect the gills of the shrimp, and increase mortality rates. Most farmers today resort to physical and chemical treatments to control ammonia and nitrite. Such treatments are often inadequate, ineffective or short-lived. Ammonia and nitrite control is a major cause of concern for the shrimp farmer. Remedy from Novozymes Biologicals - Nitrifying Bacteria Microbial technology from Novozymes Biologicals, world leaders in microbial ecology, can provide a solution to these problems. Novozymes’ PondProtect is a consortium of non-pathogenic, nitrifying bacteria capable of effective removal of ammonia and nitrite waste from shrimp ponds. It is a combination of two specific nitrifying bacteria that work together to convert harmful ammonia first to nitrite and then to harmless nitrate. The more ammonia or nitrite builds up, the more the consortium grows and is activated to handle the ammonia/nitrite buildup. This bacterial consortium supplements the naturally-occurring nitrifying bacteria in the pond and accelerates the process of nitrification. Technical Benefits Nitrite (NO2 ppm) Ammonia (NH3 ppm) Ammonia and Nitrite Reduction Treatment begins Treatment begins PondProtect has shown in successful trials to drastically reduce ammonia and nitrite levels in shrimp ponds The graphs show the toxic build up of ammonia and nitrites in the non-treated (control) pond with advancing culture days. However, in ponds treated with PondProtect, ammonia levels and nitrite levels remained relatively low. The NH3 and especially NO2 spikes in the non-treated ponds were serious enough to cause mortality of the culture and force early harvesting. Treated ponds had longer culture periods than non-treated ponds. • In addition to improvement in ammonia and nitrite levels, the treated ponds also acquired balance of heterotrophic bacteria, algae and bluegreen cyano bacteria indicated by the blue-green pond colour. • PondProtect has high salinity tolerance and is active in salinity levels as high as 35 ppt. Water colour/density of treated pond Commercial Benefits • Yield increase • Weight increase • FCR decrease • Profit increase In trials conducted using PondProtect, treated ponds showed an average yield improvement of 20%, size improvement of 20%, and FCR reduction of 20%, resulting in an average gross profit increase of 55% per pond. With PondProtect, the farmer can prevent toxic conditions caused by ammonia and nitrite buildup which lead to stress in the shrimp, decreased yield and increased mortality rate. PondProtect helps maintain a healthy pond environment and improves sales and profitability for the farmer. Application Details PondProtect Shrimp Farms Dosage For Prevention For Emergency Conditions Initial 3 - 4 Kg/ha 3 - 4 Kg/ha first application If ammonia or nitrite levels persist, reapply 1 - 2 Kg/ha, 3 days after first application Maintenance 1 - 2 Kg/ha, per week, 1 week after first application* *Note: The impact of Ammonia and Nitrite is most serious during 15 - 35 Days of Culture (DOC) and after 90 DOC. The rates shown above apply under the following conditions: • DO > 4 • Alkalinity > 100 ppm • Pond depth = 1.5 m Shrimp hatcheries For Prevention For Emergency Conditions 30 gm/1000 liters every 3 days 100 gm/1000 liters Some size and color variation of product will not affect performance.
