2017 Guidance and Support/Gifted and Talented

GIFTED & TALENTED (G & T) &
GUIDANCE & SUPPORT (G & S) UNITS
G & T and G & S are exciting areas for teachers to focus on. When a strong developmental, interactive programme
operates, there is considerable opportunity for extension, challenge and quality learning for the able student and
recovery work for the less able.
Here at Manurewa Intermediate School we offer recovery and extension programmes, in an ongoing way within
classroom programmes by appropriate grouping, as well as some in class or withdrawal support. There is a myriad
of support for these areas targeting all children in specific groups in support programmes (through the Guidance
and Support Unit) and two Adapted Learning Unit classes (one for children with serious to severe learning needs
and one for children who need specific academic enrichment); MiTV (Manurewa Intermediate School Television
Studio); Sports Academy; numerous Bands; Choir and Cultural Performance groups and many Education for
Sustainability/Environmental Education groups and projects.

QUICK60 Programme
•
Quick60 is a small group intervention programme that ensures literacy learning for all students. The books are
sequential and leveled to commonly used levels. Each Quick60 book has an in-depth Lesson Plan and Colour Coded
Assessment Check Sheet. The programme can be used with small groups of up to five students and can be
implemented by a teacher or a teacher aide without further training, ideally one session per day.
Each Quick60 lesson plan is very explicit. Each lesson has seven components that remain consistent throughout the
programme. These are Quick Quiz, New Word, Quick Read, Quick Check, Quick Write, New Skill, and New Book.
Emphasis is given to reading and spelling. Each lesson also provides for fluency practice, comprehension, vocabulary
instruction and writing. Subsequent lessons provide opportunities for revision and consolidation.
ESOL Programme
•
Small group withdrawal support for MOE funded (may include students who are no longer eligible for funding) ESOL
students for whom English is their second language. This programme is coordinated by the ESOL Learning Assistant
in collaboration with the DP: Guidance and Support and implemented by the ESOL Learning Assistant. It is highly
likely that this programme will dovetail with the above programmes and these same children will also be targeted for
literacy and numeracy support by all teachers.
