Independent Events: Two events such that the occurrence of
one does not affect the likelihood that the other will occur.
Each of the following would be situations in which
neither event affects the outcome of the other
• Rolling a die and tossing a coin
• Picking a marker out of a box, replacing it, and then picking again
• Spinning a spinner twice in a row

Dependent Events: Two events such that the occurrence of
one affects the likelihood that the other will occur.
Each of the following would be situations in which
the 1st event affects the outcome of the other
• Picking a name out of a hat, keeping it, then picking again
• Picking a marker out of a box, keeping it, and then picking again
• Choosing a number from a list of ten, then choosing another number
from the remaining list

Probability of Dependent Events
P(A and B) = P(A)
P(B given A)
• The 2nd fraction's denominator will always be one less than the 1st
fraction's denominator.
• Sometimes, the 2nd fraction's numerator will also be one less than
the 1st fraction's numerator.

If we complete the same problems in an independent and dependent way,
you will see the mathematical difference between the two.
There are 5 red, 1 blue, 6 green, and 3 yellow markers in a box.
Independent Dependent 1. P(red and yellow) 1. P(red and yellow)
2. P(yellow and blue) 2. P(yellow and blue) 3. P(red and green) 3. P(red and green) 4. P(red and red)
4. P(red and red) 5. P(red, yellow, and blue) 5. P(red, yellow, and blue)
