Twins at Shuksan
O CTOBER 20, 2011
By Payton and Amanda
Do you ever wish that you had a twin?
Well some of our fellow Shuksan students are twins. Some are identical and
some are what we call fraternal. Identical
is when both twins look the same and are
the same gender. Fraternal is when both
twins might look somewhat similar (or
not) but are not identical and may not be
the same gender.
We also asked Des’ree and Deja the same
questions and they both answered with:
“We like being twins, we always get
mixed up, though. But we like the fact
that we can trick people.”
Overall, we have three sets of identical
twins and three sets of fraternal twins
here at Shuksan, and it was really cool to

Football: Bellingham vs. Sedro Woolley By Jake
On October 8th, Bellingham football team
played Sedro Woolley at Lummi high
school. It started out with the six captains
meeting at the fifty yard line (three captains
from Sedro Woolley and three from Bellingham). Sedro Woolley won the coin toss
and chose to receive. Bellingham kicked the
ball to Sedro Woolley and they kept driving
down the field until Bellingham stopped
them and they had to punt on a fourth
down. Bellingham received, drove the ball
down, and scored a touchdown by Liam.
We were good on the extra point field goal
for two points. Still in the first quarter,
Bellingham kicked the ball off to Sedro
Woolley who in return punted again on
fourth down which then ended the first
quarter; Bellingham had a one touchdown
lead.
Then Bellingham came out in the second

quarter with the ball and ran down for a
touchdown with Liam on the carry/
reception and was good on the extra point
field goal for two points. Bellingham then
kicked off to Sedro Woolley who scored a
touchdown on their drive down the field.
They kicked it back to us and we drove it
down the field with Jake on the carry and
“was good no good” on the extra point.
Then Bellingham kicked the ball back to
Sedro Woolley who drove it down the field
until Bellingham’s defense stopped them on
downs and they had to punt. They punted it
to Kengi, who ran it all the way back for a
touchdown (almost a sixty yard run!!!!) and
was good on the extra point for two. Thus
ended the second quarter with Bellingham
ahead by 24 points (30-6 Bellingham).
In the third quarter, Bellingham received
and drove it down the field for another

Bellingham was good on the extra point

In the fourth quarter Sedro Woolley got
one last touchdown with an extra point
(only for one) and gave the ball back to
Bellingham. Then Bellingham Scored one
more time with Jake on the carry and
missed the extra point for two points.
That Touchdown ended the game, Bellingham 44, Sedro Woolly 13.
This past Wednesday marked
the end of the magazine sales
for Shuksan Middle School
with the final turn in day. The
Magazine Drive serves to raise
money for the school to use for
special events that includes
field trips for our students.
Let’s see what students of
Shuksan have to say about this.
Now we’ll ask some students
what they think about the
magazine drive.

of people like magazines and
we get prizes for selling them.”
7th grader Rylee says, “I like it

8th grader Tina says, “I like the

That is what students in the

Culture: Lunar New Year In Viet Nam
Besides celebrating New Years, Vietnamese people all over the world also celebrate Lunar New Year. Lunar New Year is
usually at the beginning of February and it
usually last about 4 days. The reason that
there is no exact date for Lunar New Year
on the worldwide calendar is because
some places in Asia, Viet Nam included,
use a different type of calendar call a Lunar calendar that follows the moon’s
phases. The easiest way to understand this
is that whenever the moon is round, it is
the 15th of that month. So if you ever see a
little number next to the real date on a
Vietnamese or a more common Chinese
calendar, you’ll know that it’s also a Lunar
calendar.
The first day is Lunar New Year’s Eve and
it’s the most fun because everyone is excited about the celebration. Buildings are
covered with red and yellow banners that
say “Happy New Year” in both Vietnamese
and English. There are also festive lanterns
and blinking light bulbs that light up the
night sky. The streets, especially the main
ones, are congested with people sightseeing.
After riding around for about an hour in the
congested streets, people go home to get
ready to light their incenses and pray for a
good year. This usually lasts until midnight,
but if the incense burn sooner everyone still
stay up late to watch the fireworks.
On New Years day, my family usually
wakes up late and visits my grandparents
just like New Years here. Comparing to last
night, it is not as exciting, but this is the
time when the money start rolling in. During Lunar New Year, kids receive red envelopes containing money from adults that
they know. Depending on how many people

you know and also how generous they are
that money can last for a really long time,
especially if you celebrate Lunar New Year
in the U.S. Out of respect the kids have to
wish the adults a good year and, of course,
say thank you. The 3rd and 4th days are the
same except maybe people go visit relatives
or take trips to different places. My family
usually visits my aunts and uncles or they
would sometimes visit us.
