Rutland Water Nature Reserve
This internationally famous nature reserve is managed by the Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust in
partnership with Anglian Water and provides one of the most important wildfowl sanctuaries in Great
Britain, regularly holding in excess of 20,000 waterfowl. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, designated
as a European Special Protection Area and internationally recognised as a globally important wetland
RAMSAR site. Rutland Water Nature Reserve occupies a narrow strip of land running for 9 miles around
the western end of Rutland Water and covering more than 600 acres. This was created in the 1970’s with
the construction of the reservoir. The larger section of the reserve lies on the western shore, close to the
village of Egleton. Here there is a visitor centre, a number of lagoons, a wetland area, meadows and
plantation woodland. The Lyndon area, on the south shore of the reservoir comprises a visitor centre, a
narrow strip of meadows and shoreline woodland as well as plantation and ancient woodland.
All the activities are undertaken on the reserve not too far from the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre.
The centre provides a great base for the sessions as there is a classroom which the team can retreat to in
cold weather for lunch; toilet facilities; an interpretation area and viewing gallery, as well as a small shop
which sells drinks and snacks . Ample parking space is available; there is an allocated minibus/ coach
space which can be reserved for your team’s arrival.
Location
Rutland Water Nature Reserve sits in
the heart of Rutland. It is well
connected with Peterborough and
Leicester via the A1 and A47 and sits
directly on the A606 between Melton
and Stamford.
The Anglian Water Birdwatching
Centre at Egleton lies 1 mile south of
Oakham and can be reached from
either the A606 (Oakham to Stamford
road) or the A6003 (Oakham to
Uppingham road). Drive in to the
village of Egleton , and where the road
swings a sharp left over a small bridge,
carry straight on down the “No
Through Road”.
The Lyndon Reserve and Visitor Centre
are located on the south shore of the
reservoir between the villages of Edith
Weston and Manton. From the A47
take the turning to Manton off the
A6003. From the A1 take the turning
for Edith Weston off the A606.
Employee Volunteering Days
Why take part in an employee volunteering day at Rutland Water Nature Reserve?
Our employee volunteering days offer a unique “behind the scenes” glimpse of Rutland Water Nature
Reserve and its wildlife. It’s a day out of the office with a difference and you can make a positive difference
to wildlife. Hands-on tasks such as coppicing, willow-weaving and nest-box building offer opportunities
that will benefit staff through team building and communication. The activities we can provide at Rutland
Water Nature Reserve are suitable for a range of ages and abilities. No previous skills are required as
training will be given at the start of the day. The staff here are there to guide the group through the task;
your group may be lead by one of our wardens, the volunteer co-ordinator or some of our key
experienced volunteers. All of our staff have a good knowledge of natural history and practical
conservation and are used to working with groups of mixed abilities with little or no experience of
conservation and motivating everyone to get involved. There is a role for every member of the team so no
one is left standing around.
“The whole day was a great experience and promoted team building and the
opportunity to do something completely out of the ordinary day to day. An excellent
day, great achievement by the team.” Land Rover, UK
Our volunteering days are designed to fill a full day at the reserve, however they can be tailored to suit
your needs. Each activity has a per head cost associated, and may be limited to certain times of the year.
There is also the opportunity to hire our education centre for either a full or half day so you could
incorporate a team meeting into your day if you wish.
What is included in the cost of your day?
As a small charity we are very grateful for your time and help but we do have a cost per person for each
task to help fund our work. You will be helping us to protect and enhance our local wildlife and wild
places, inspire people about the natural world and encourage everyone to take action for wildlife and
stand up for wildlife and the natural environment.
The cost includes the following:

You will have a personal point of contact for all arrangements for the work party. Once you have
chosen your preferred date and task, the Trust will provide a full set of confirmation details for all
participants with all of the information they will need.

Our experienced nature reserve staff will be responsible for preparing, equipping, and leading your
work day. They will carry out full risk assessments prior to the workday, copies of which will be
provided in advance. You will be covered by our Public Liability Insurance.

They will ensure that the work day is equipped with all of the personal protective equipment,
tools, materials and any other equipment required.

They will start your day with an introductory talk, health and safety briefing and all the training
that you will need for the task in hand. They will work alongside you to ensure the safety of all
participants.

Light refreshments (Lunch is not included in the cost, but can be arranged for an additional cost of
£5.00 per person. )

New skills, a sense of team spirit and a thoroughly enjoyable day out!

weather forecast. You may get wet and muddy during the day, so we would advise you don’t wear
anything that you wouldn’t like to get dirty. Walking boots and/or wellies and a waterproof coat are
essential. It is a good idea to bring a camera and binoculars if you have them. In the winter bring a hat and
an extra layer to keep you warm. In the summer we would advise you to wear clothes that cover the skin,
bring sun cream and a sun hat.

picnic type food.
